Pixar Internships 2011

No the degree thing will not give you an edge. When it all comes down to getting an internship as an animator, it is all about the demo reel…and not everyone who goes to CalArts goes to Pixar. I’ve spoken with a manager at Pixar and she told me that a bunch of students are from programs they’ve never even heard of only because they just had awesome demo reels. CalArts is a good school, but don’t think that going there is a free pass to Pixar.

I just realized I forgot to put in a hard copy of my cover letter and resume in with the portfolio.
Is that the reason I haven’t heard anything from them! Ohno! This is so bad… I just hope they at least looked at my work.

This is true. They do want to see if if you have a bachelors in an art related field. But so many people with that qualification send in their resumes, that the deciding factor is basically ones demo reel.

However, I do think that SUCCESS program is very helpful!

I wasn’t trying to sound over-confident or anything. I was just talking about my plan for the future. Don’t need to be snappy. Thanks for saying the degree thing won’t help, you just crushed my dreams. (haha jk  )

I didn’t say you sounded over-confident. And I was just being pretty direct with you. If it’s your dream, there’s no point in sugar coating things if you really want to achieve it. There are many people in the industry who don’t have degrees. There are people who just go into specialized programs (Animation Mentor) that don’t hand out degrees and end up working for companies such as Pixar. I think a few even interned for them last year. I’d rather be realistic about situations and make you realize that you have to do more to get to where you want instead of having your dreams just crushed in the end. :unamused:

Whilst it may or may not give you an edge, this SUCCESS program certainly can’t hurt
A lot of time and bother already out of the way, as soon as you graduate! Sounds pretty fun.

What we need is a ‘how to get an intern at pixar’ college class, then we’d be set

Have to be honest, I had a hug ego when I sent off my portfolio; I was all like, I’m gold plated and freaking amazing!
But then I looked at other’s work, and then I received my rejection letter… and began to ingest humble pie like there was no tomorrow.
I’ve been chasing my animation dream for the last 8 years, so getting a reality check was good, cos I can at least figure out where I have oodles of room to improve

Perhaps a few rejections are not bad, cos they force you to be introspective, and look for ways to be better next time

Has anyone here heard back from Disney Animation yet? I read somewhere that they wait until pretty late to contact their applicants, but was just wondering if anyone here has heard news

I have not heard anything back, yet. I do hope they contact people, soon, though!

I was told by two friends that someone was already offered an internship for one of the positions. I also emailed the recruiter I was in contact with and she’s checking the status of my application.

The one that was filled is probably modeling, I just checked and the modeling bar ticked over to “closed” for me.

I think I’m waiting on a rejection, because modeling was my best shot - 2 weeks ago, I was emailed by someone who told me I was a finalist for modeling and asked if I was still available. Thought that meant I would get an interview, but no - does anyone know if they do interviews for these positions? They must, right?

It wasn’t for the modeling actually. Well my status bars still say reviewing… I would follow up again with the person who emailed you about your application.

I don’t want to nag her :-X Did you get an interview? I know a while back you mentioned you don’t say if you get interviews, but it would put me at piece of mind if I knew there was a last stage I didn’t get to, so I can stop wondering.

Another weird thing was, someone from Disney called me and didn’t leave a message (2 weeks back). I called back and no one picked up. I know it was Disney because I’m from the east coast, don’t get calls from that area code… shrug When I emailed her to ask if there was a next step, she just told me my reel was being reviewed and they would get back to me either way.

Last thing, on twitter they mentioned they are contacting people soon. twitter.com/#!/waltdisneyanim

Does everyone here get contacted directly via phone or an email notice first? I wish you guys the best of luck, I applied for the production management one and the status is still open so hopefully that means they haven’t shortlisted yet…

Then again, it is cutting it pretty close, I assume they must’ve contacted some people already particularly if they’re international applicants

It’s not nagging. Just be polite in your email when asking about the status of your application. Just don’t email them constantly asking then that would be bad. I can’t believe you remember that about me and the interview thing. I’m a bit embarrassed now. I’m actually no where near where you’re at in your interview stage…hopefully they get back to me tomorrow. I don’t expect to get anything though.

My experience is that you will usually get an email first followed up with a time to schedule a phone call.

yeah, random that I remembered that! No worries about not hearing yet, all I got was that one email and a missed call.

Still nothing from the recruiter. Are you waiting for any other places?

I asked Disney about the status of my app, they got back to me and told me someone else got modeling. It’s cool though, I do have a job at a small local game design company.

Still, so close… I would’ve loved to get out there. Got to keep working.

They still haven’t told me, but I’m going to assume that I didn’t get it either. But at least you were being considered. You should apply for the Fall or Spring internships. You might be able to get them.
