I thought it might be interesting to start this thread so us avid Pixar fans could talk about the “friendly” rivalry between Pixar and Dreamworks. To start off…
A Bugs Life and Antz
Haven’t really seen either of them fully (if you’d believe it).
Oh my gosh really? I’m a little surprised by that! No worries.
First of all, I am obviously siding with Pixar here. Antz has several things that I don’t like about it, for example, the animation. To me it felt a bit fuzzy, by the time Antz was released, Pixar had already put Toy Story on DVD. The quality of the animation in Antz seemed extremely poor campared to Toy Story. Antz had a much bigger budget too, it had 105,000 Million and Toy Story only had 30 Million… What on earth did Dreamworks spend it all on?
I only really found one bothersome thing in A Bugs Life, the fact the ants had two arms and only two legs, as if they were human. I have no idea why it bothers me so much, its a good film, but I just wonder what made Pixar decide this.
Out of all CGI Dreamworks, Antz is the one I ‘like’ the most. While I hated the animation, the story and characters were okay. It was a interesting, decent film. If we’re talking about 2D Dreamworks too, though, I have some more positive thoughts on that…
Shouldn’t this topic be put in the “Other Animation” forum?
Don’t tell me i put it in the wrong forum… Face Floor
I agree with you Flame Of Awesomeness, It did have a good story but the animation just annoyed me. Its good to see they have improved in recent years.
While I guess the animation isn’t super at all in Antz, I wouldn’t complain so much if it were more of an original story. This seems to be the exception for me where the first film from a studio is not my favorite or one of my favorites, but actually last place. I wish I could give the film credit for taking a bit of a different turn than A Bug’s Life did, but I just can’t because the fact that this exists was just too much of a disrespectful move from DreamWorks at the time. Obviously, not everyone at the studio was to blame for that since most of them were just trying to make money to make a living like anyone else (hopefully), but I appreciated the studio more once they made more good films that spoke their own voice without trying to talk down to Disney or Pixar at the same time. As of recent years, they seem to have been going down that right path which is why I have, like, 8 of their movies to catch up on!
I totally agree with you. DW films have improved a hell of a lot these past years. But I still get the feeling that they are trying to take Pixar down but I highly doubt that will happen anytime soon. Personally, I think that How to Train Your Dragon is DW’s best production by far, while Pixars best movie… probably Wall-E or Up… Its a tough choice.
I mean it, one of these days I’m going to see How to Train Your Dragon and go “That is pure awesomeness, I should have seen this 3 years ago!” I would probably pick Toy Story or Toy Story 2 as the best Pixar film, but WALL*E and Up are so amazing too. I actually love almost all of them equally, so they would all be the best for different reasons in my opinion.
So what else should we discuss about Pixar and DreamWorks, or Disney or the other studios as well? Unless there’s more to be said regarding A Bug’s Life and Antz, of course.
There is no point to, but Finding Nemo and Shark Tail… Let me say, I vote Shark Tail as DW’s worst film. Nuff said. I thought the animation in Finding Nemo was just beautiful, it has a rich and original story and I love how its set in Australia! Dory as always is just epic! But a tougher comparison, would have to be Monsters, Inc and Shrek.
Yes, how can you top [i:3kztc2av]Finding Nemo[/i:3kztc2av] in the underwater world? [i:3kztc2av]Finding Nemo[/i:3kztc2av] rocks! I don’t think you can improve it. It has a great story, great characters, and is actually very funny for being quite a maturely-themed movie. Now…I guess I would have given [i:3kztc2av]Shark Tale[/i:3kztc2av] credit for having a different story and having one that [u:3kztc2av]may[/u:3kztc2av] have been enjoyable. Unfortunately, I don’t know that I can because I think it just threw too much out the window. I guess the mafia theme was somewhat interesting in a sense, but I don’t think there were enough good things to make up for the movie’s flaws. It is pretty lazy and I don’t own it anymore (why did I ever in the first place?! Boy…).
I agree with that. I remember watching Shark Tail when I was younger and thinking, “I like this movie!” But it was animation, it is colorful, it appealed to me, but now, I have a major dislike for it. I throughly enjoyed Shrek though, very original idea. A princess falling in love with an ogre. I doubt they found that in a book.
Pixar and Dreamworks both have awesome styles and all movies they have made have their own unique redeeming qualities, yo.
Antz vs. A Bug’s Life. I go with A Bug’s Life, only because that one played a major role in my childhood (I can almost recite the entire movie in Dutch) and because I still love it. I’ve seen Antz once and while it had impressive graphics, I thought it was just a bit too gritty, especially that one part where uh, a decapitated ant head spoke to someone? Wh-
And as for Shark Tale vs. Finding Nemo, I think I like Finding Nemo better, but I did also like Shark Tale. Could’ve done without the pop culture references and fart jokes though
Both these films almost seem like ‘darker and edgier’ versions of their Pixar counterparts. I dunno if that was intentional. But for what it’s worth, I think they all have some interesting aspects.
I don’t believe in Pixar vs. Dreamworks, company vs. company, studio vs. studio.
But I do believe that many different kinds of animation make for a happy and healthy industry.
I of course like Pixar better. But, both Disney and DreamWorks seem to be doing 360 turnarounds. And it makes me so happy. I feel like we’re living in movie history.
Those are my exact thoughts, Virginia!
Cool! Autistic minds think alike.
I thought of that and couldn’t resist…Anyway, The croods looks weird. But 'm not excited for MU either. Hmmm
I am actually exited for MU. The Crods looks odd though… I rather enjoyed Rise Of The Guardians
haha, there’s truth there though.
I personally am excited for MU, but sadly, I’m just not feeling the same excitement that I used to feel over these movies for some reason. I’m sure my mind will be changed once the movie’s actually out, though. I’ve enjoyed the trailers. And I will probably give The Croods a shot at least. I still need to see Rise of the Guardians!!
I missed Rise of the Guardians as well. Which stinks; it looks creative!
I’m okay with MU, but not really excited. Glenn’s sister is, so we’ll probably take her.
