Yes it is bad news, unexpectedly. Two weeks ago it had 2105 screens here and now is almost a third of that! What is galling is that Twilight still has 1200+ screens and is doing half TS3’s business. Figure that. The loss of screens so suddenly on Friday caused TS3 to take in only $370,000 that day, which was what it took in on Tuesday, a weekday. It probably did better on Saturday, but still is a depressing number. Oh, just did a count, and 8 movies were released the past 2 weeks, almost all crappy, I saw the Scott Pilgrim one and got up and left.
So I went to Despicable Me instead, which had a nice crowd and got alot of laughs. What a refreshing, original movie; I’ve made a number of favorable comments about this movie and DW’s dragon movie last March. Too bad silly Alice has done so much better than these two movies, which are near Pixar in quality. Anyways, 3 of the top 8 movies so far this year are animated, including the top spot:
Toy Story 3 BV …$402,651,000
Alice in Wonderland (2010) BV $334,191,110
Iron Man 2 Par. …$312,128,345
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Sum…$296,649,934
Inception WB …$256,348,000
Shrek Forever After P/DW …$237,459,246
Despicable Me Uni. …$227,580,000
How to Train Your Dragon DW…$217,581,231
The Karate Kid Sony …,$174,861,447
Clash of the Titans (2010) WB $163,214,888
Grown Ups Sony …$158,524,196
The Last Airbender Par. …$129,897,047
Shutter Island Par. …$128,012,934
I doubt that the extended version of Avatar will unseat any of these movies. The dvd only sold 7-8M copies, because there aren’t any special features on that dvd, it’s barren. Nothing like what Pixar and Disney pack into the dvd’s of their most spectacular movies. Outside of Despicable, there aren’t really any good movies out now, so when Labor Day rolls around, it’s possible Avatar might make a mint. Hopefully they will release a complete dvd by Thanksgiving and give us what we want!
