Proms

-shrug- It

might also depend on who is teaching you. I like English because our English teacher respects us. I like Art

because our teacher puts on music for us to listen to while working. (And it suits everyone’s taste too.) As for

stuff like Science and Social Studies, I don’t really like those who are teaching me in those subjects. So I

reckon it’s often to do with the teacher.

I don’t really have a lot of friends at school…I choose not to, cuz most

kids are jerks…sigh

I am so excited for prom, that I might think of going this year.

I don’t have anything against home

schooling. I think it is great, but I think there are a lot of things, social things, you don’t learn at home

that you do at school.

When you go to school you meet people from all walks of life. I think it is

important that you interact with different people so you are prepared to deal with them when you go off into the

real world i.e. when you get a job and have to work with different people. Sometimes you need to face bullies at

school or stand up for yourself if you get picked on.

Also you make the best friends in school.

Furthermore what is going to happen when you go to University? I don’t think you can home school that.

Mitch & Gasduude seem like totally awesome people though, I would have never guessed they were home

schooled.

Aw – you too,

huh? I guess we’re both in the same boat. Although, PixarVixen mentioned to me that

I have lots of friends on this site (to which I agree), so I’m sure that it applies to you too. In fact, I

gaurantee it.

aZnCdn - I do have to agree with that statement. There are

advantages and disadvantages to being a homeschooled student, the major downside being secludedness and a lack of

friends. However, us homeschoolers aren’t as exposed to such things as drugs, physical and mental abuse, and

other mishaps.

And you think I’m awesome? Heheh – well…thanks!

Well I can’t say much about physical and mental abuse cause that is bad whter you are home

schooled or not

As for being exposed to drugs, alcohol and other mishaps, regardless wehter you are home

schooled or not people need to learn the responsibility of these things.

Case in point I have met poeple

who have been overly protected by their parents. And when they got to college they had no idea how to control

themselves. They started drinking and partying like there was no tomorrow and before they knew it they flunked

out of school. So I think it is important to expose your children to these things while they are still young but

at the same time teach them the responsibility that goes with it.

By the way sorry to get so far off

topic.

Mitch- Well, no offence or

anything, and I do see exactly what you mean about the name calling thing, but the school I go to is very large

and very ‘rough’, yet we (as far as I’m aware) don’t have any problems with that sort of thing at all. It

might depend on each individual school, but our school’s got a reputation for being filled with sluts, to put it

simply, and yet those who are a bit different and unique seem happy enough as well.

These are just my

experiences- I might be wrong, but things seem a little more…segregated in America, where you don’t have to

wear uniform, so automatically people can judge you by the way you dress, etc., and things just go on from there.

It might just be because of all the TV shows that depict American high schools, but it does seem like there are

groups like ‘jocks’ and ‘cheerleaders’, and I think that might be where things are quite different here, as

we don’t have that sort of stuff, for some reason (apart from chavs, but they’re an exception).

If

you’re happy being home schooled, then that’s great because some people do do a lot better being home schooled

than if they were sent to school. But it may be a bit too shielding- you, as everyone, will have to go out into

the big wide world one day, and usually that’s a shock for most people, so it might be even harder for you.

Yeah, way OT here! I don’t know whether to go to the prom or not, now- it’s really expensive,

and that’s not including buying a prom dress, and only a few of my close friends are going anyway…On the other

hand, this really is like a once in a lifetime oppurtunity, and I don’t want to miss it…I can’t decide!

I went to a

catholic High school and had to wear uniform but once a month we got casual day where we can wear what ever we

wanted.

Sadly it depends on where you school is located which determines the status of your school. If

you are in a rich area your school was preppy and if your school was located in the ghetto then it might have a

reputation for drugs & violence.

In any case back on topic. I would recommend you going to your prom,

it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. In fact that will be your last memory of High School!!!

Well…I’ll just clear this “off-topic-ness” up for everyone before things go haywire. Heheh.

:stuck_out_tongue:

aZnCdn - Believe me, I’ve been exposed to…alot. No need to tell me what

drugs, alchohol, and some other vulger things are out there, because I do know about them.

I think my

pain problem with public school is, as you said, overprotectedness and peer pressure. I went to a local public

highschool in my area one time in my whole life, and I just could not stand it.

Sure, I’d heard about the stuff that happens there but…it was a little too much when I just dove right into it

all of a sudden.

I have complete confidence in that my college years will

turn out quite well, however. The students will be more “civilized” in that universe, and the

particular college that I want to attend is very nicely laid out and attended so, so I’m sure I’ll be quite

comfortable. I won’t be attending any proms though, I can promise you that. :stuck_out_tongue:

lizardgirl - I see exactly what you mean there. California school students

are, shall we say, “uneducated” and “carefree”. I’m telling you, the kids these days…you

wouldn’t believe what they do here in California.

So yeah – I see your point. I’ve never been to an

English school before, but I’m sure they’re much nicer and more “pleasant” than those here in the

USA. Sure, you have the occasional slacker and such, but it’s probably not as bad as over here. Students have

tried to stab their teachers and such before – it’s horrible.

There you have it. I ain’t going to any

public school ever again. College, on the other hand, is something I look forward to.

But anyway – back

on topic… (snigger)

Mitch- Woah, okay, yeah, I can see why you would want to be homeschooled if things

like that are going on! The good thing with college is, everyone will be there because they want to be, not

because they’re being forced, so it should be a better atmosphere all in all anyway.

Wow, the topic is about proms and people are talking about public and home school

difference? Am I lost?

Yes, exactly! That’s why I have this group I go

to. Some of the people are a little wierd though… :unamused:

Wow, I

didn’t know I was leaving that good of an impression!

But back on topic…

lizardgirl - Cha – you

hardly ever hear about students trying to assassinate their teachers, but there is the rare case every once in a

while. Kids exchange drugs and alcholol in the system, so the higher authorities always have to be on the alert.

You get swearing, teachers who let students have their way in class, everything! It sucks… :stuck_out_tongue:

So yeah

– I’ll just stick to the homeschooling system. I get higher grades and I have more fun…by myself. Better

atmosphere, like you said. Not to mention, I’ll be able to watch Ratatouille

whenever I want when it comes out in theaters. (snigger)

The Star

Swordsman - Haha – yeah, sorry about that. I think I started it, actually. I should make a topic

on homeschooling – heh.

^^ We should just have

a thread that says “Home School Prom”… HA!

Erm… there are two different things going on in here, so I’ll post for both.

About Prom… I’ve

never been since I’m only a sophomore in high school and I’m probably not going until senior year. Reason for

that being the money that goes into it. If it’s your senior year, I think you should definately go. Prom is part

of the high school experiences and you’re right, it is a chance to have fun, look pretty, and wear a dress.

Although I haven’t gone to prom, I did go to Winter Formal for the first time this year. At my school, WF and

Prom are basically the same, except at Winter Formal it’s more of a… amusement park thing where you ride rides

and also dance whereas Prom is more of a… dance thing. Actually. That’s more of an assumption. But

hey, I had a lot of fun. I’m actually not a big fan of dances… it is incredibly awkward for me… but I had

fun. It’s all about the people, man.

About the homeschooling… Although I also have those

days when I wish to be homeschooled, I must give you my side of being in a Californian public school system.

Yeah, there are drugs and alcohol but really, what school system doesn’t? I think it’s valuable to realize that

you have to stay away from these and to learn how to not give into peer pressure and how to learn who to be

friends with. There are some dark things going on out there and stereotypical bimbos who don’t even think but if

you stay on the right side, you don’t get involved with it. I have a great time, I hang with the right crowd. I

just have to let you know Mitch, that it isn’t all that bad. (Not trying to convert you or anything…

hahah).

Lol, well, after all this discussion, I probably won’t

be going to the prom after all! None of my close friends have applied, so I won’t be either. We’ll

definitely go to the Year 11 barbecue (since it is free, after all!) and instead of the prom, will just be going

to a party, since there should be plenty of parties going on at the time which DON’T have a ridiculously high

entrance fee!

Well, I’m sure you’re gonna have a lot of

fun anyways! You should still wear make-up and wear a dress and get prettified though. Hahah!

JamieLew- Yes, definitely! Also, I think someone had the idea of making

everyone do a fancy dress, and the rules are that you have to dress up as something beginning with ‘P’. This

makes so many options- you could be Postman Pat, a pancake, a Playstation…And even a few things a little ruder!

That’s a really funny and creative theme. You’re

gonna have a lot of fun… heheh. I would be a potato.

Lemme see if I can jump in this (rubs hands together)

As far a proms, I’ll be lucky enough to be going to my second one senior year. I got to have an

8th grade prom. Agreeing with Mitch, boys ain’t on my priority list yet. But I know a good lookin one when I see

one mind you. Just don’t expect nothin more than that. :sunglasses:

As far as that homeschool/ public

school thing, I’ve been in public school all my life. Over here, “ghetto” won’t even cut it. Some

schools round here are just plain grimey. We get gang-awareness presetations every year. Fortunatley, I go to one

of the better schools in the area. Occasional fights are usual but not too frequent (we’re smarter than that

 ). When it comes to name calling, everyone has one, we pick on each other and brush it off moments later.

Other schools are so bad that even the elementary school by my house has police escorts! But you get used to this

stuff. Plus, there’s just moments that you never would’ve experienced if homeschooled, I mean once in a

lifetime stuff! But aeh, what ever fits you.
