Ratatouille box office results

Does anybody mind if a copy a blog post here that I just wrote? It just sums up my current thoughts on Ratatouilles box office performance.

Please do Luxo Jr. - I was just over there reading it and think you hit the nail on the head.

Time for another box office update. I guess time will tell but my prediction that Ratatouille will perform steadily at the box office seems to true for the most part. Ratatouille is no longer at the top of the box office, taken over by that other big robot, Transformers. Twas to be expected. So these are the numbers…

Total Lifetime Grosses

Domestic: $109,546,000 94.9%

  • Foreign: $5,828,000 5.1%
    = Worldwide: $115,374,000

[via Box Office Mojo]

So since the last box office update three days ago, domestically, Ratatouille has grossed $36,884,568 with an average of $12,294,856 per day. Ratatouille has been out 10 days so far and I think it is doing very well considering its one of the few original films this year.

Here are some other numbers for you. I think the folks at the house of mouse will be quite content with Ratatouille’s performance considering it’s only been in release 10 days and it has outgrossed Meet The Robinson’s domestic gross of $96,645,714. Currently I can see Ratatouille making it into or very near the top 10 films domestic grossing’s wise this year. And do remember that the film has yet to open in many, many locations around the globe. I do think this film might be a bit of a hit in France just like Finding Nemo was in Australia.

And just to give you an idea on how special Ratatouille is to Box Office Mojo users, it is currently ranked as the 4th highest rated film on the site, after 1. LOTR: Return of the King, 2. Star Wars and 3. SW: The Empire Strikes Back. The Incredibles sits at 11th position. Here is another bit of perspective, The Shawshank Redemption only grossed $28,341,469 domestically during it’s release in '94, and it is a film that Andrew Stanton describes as “perfect” and it sits at 8th position. Of course I should mention that Ratatouille only has 586 votes compared to the 4,5 and 6 thousand votes on other films, so time will only tell where it sits in the ladder.

So please, please, please, do not fret about the box office numbers for Ratatouille. Leave that to the shareholders and the execs, that is if they are worrying at all. Box office performance has nothing to do with the greatness of a film, and from I keep hearing about Ratatouille, it’s near perfection. Can’t wait to see it! Have a great day!

Wonderful news! :sunglasses:

I am glad to see that Ratatouille is performing steadily.

More like small packages of bitter medicine, if I may say so frankly. The thing is (and this is just my humble opinion), most of the movies that DreamWorks makes just aren’t good at all. As a matter of fact, I never had to question whether most of their films would stand the test of time - I simply never became fond of these films from the get-go. To date, the only DreamWorks (CGI) films that I liked were Shrek 2 and Over the Hedge (I haven’t seen Shrek yet). In contrast, Shark Tale is one of the worst, if not the worst, animated film that I’ve seen in my entire life. (I’m saying all this not to be rude to the people over at DreamWorks, but to provide them some constructive criticism.)

As for Ratatouille’s box office performance, I think it’s doing well, given the competition. However, quality is obviously always more important than box office earnings, at least to us viewers. It seems that a lot of people are starting to question whether Disney’s acquisition of Pixar was a wise decision, and they’re basing their concerns solely on Ratatouille’s monetary earnings. Given that Ratatouile has garnered near-universal acclaim, Disney’s true philosophy on movie-making would arise depending on what they use to assess whether the film “performed well”: money or quality? The Disney company can decide on this for as long as they want, but I hope they choose the option that would garner them respect rather than the one that would simply fatten up their pockets. (When I say “Disney”, I obviously mean the current Disney company, not “Disney” as in Walt Disney the founder.)

I think TI used to be up there on the fourth position. A little while ago, it got an A- from the critics and a A- from the users. A while later, the A_ dropped to a B+. But still, people agreed that it was an incredible movie.

I congratualte Ratatouille for the jump in the yahoo list

The actual numbers for the second weekend are in:

It was number 2 for the weekend behind Transformers . No surprise there.

Well, Transformers was a highy more anticipated, popular movie than Ratatouille. But number two is still good spot.

Well, can’t say I’m surprised, but I do think I hoped a little too much.

Well, the fact that Ratatouille is going pretty steadily is definitely good news- it’s what was expected, and if a film is doing as well as expected, then that’s never a bad thing!

Yeah, I’m definitely not complaing at all. If the film didn’t make it to the 100-million mark, I would consider it a faliure at the box office. Thankfully, that’s not the case.

Sorry for the double post, but here’s another update:

Ratatouille didn’t suffer as much as I was expecting from the release of Harry Potter yesterday. There was only a $200 thousand drop between Tuesday and Wednesday’s earnings. The real test will be this weekend, though. After that, I don’t think there will be any more big movies in direct competition to Ratatouille. Still, I don’t expect it to make as much as past Pixar movies. I’m now guessing a $210-$220 million gross for Ratatouille.

Thanks for the update, Bill!

Shark Bait - Yeah, we’ll have to wait and see whether or not Ratatouille will stand the test of time (and box office gross(es)) as far as Saturday is concerned. No doubt “Harry Potter” will rake in the dough this weekend. The question is: Will Ratatouille continue to profit, as well? I sure hope so…

Another update:

It seems like it held it’s own against Harry Potter . Always a good sign.

Always a great sign! :stuck_out_tongue:

Any predictions of the final domestic gross?

Based on what we’ve seen, I would say along the lines of 185 - 195 million.

I hope it can go up to the 200 million number.

It’s doing better than would be expected considering all the competition it has, though the numbers are dropping slightly faster than I had hoped after seeing the profits from the first 10 days. I still think Ratatouille will gross around $210 million by the end of its domestic run. But if it makes more, I’ll be very happy.
