Oh, kageri, you crack me up. Sorry though, dude.
isn’t it just amazing to actually have the dvd in your hand now after all this wait…lets just pick the dvd up and stare at it and really get the feeling of having greatness in the palm of our hands
I’ll get back to you in 2 and a 1/2 months. ![]()
Quick question, but for anyone who did NOT buy their normal Ratatouille DVDs at Target:
Where does it say your disc is made?
On the back of the DVD from Target, it says “Disc made in Taiwan” but it’s not clear if it’s the main Ratatouille disc or the Target Bonus Disc, as it’s stamped right where the Bonus disc is.
Trivial question I know, but just wondering if someone who is getting the disc from a place other than Target can look at the back of it (it’s usually printed on the shrink-wrap) before they open it and let me know (it will usually say something like “Disc made in Mexico” or some such thing). This is the first time I’ve ever seen Taiwan used on a studio released disc (Disney sometimes has them done in Mexico…)
Greatness in the palm of our hands…I like how you phrased that, I think that’s a lot of what Ratatouille is about. Sadly, though, I still despise Disney for only releasing the Blu-Ray with the special features and not the DVD version. Now that I’ve experienced lots of High Definition of my TV, I do notice a slight difference in image quality when I view the DVD over any high definition picture.
And btw, the Target “bonus disk” DVD actually works, my computer just didn’t recognize the weird formatting, but the DVD player did.
That long away eh Rachel? sigh. At least I know I ain’t missing out on much. Disney can think twice if they think I’m double dipping.

Yeah. January 18 to be exact.
I emailed ezyDVD in regards to if we will get a steelbook Ratatouille, and they said that it is “in-discussion”. Hopefully my interest in the matter will get them to say “yes” to a steelbook. But every movie nowadays, and especially at ezyDVD seems to be released this way, so fingers crossed.
I’m very tempted to buy a regular version of Ratatouille off eBay with the free Target DVD, as I’m pretty sure that our Target here wouldn’t have that deal as we wouldn’t have the market for it. Oh what to do, what to do.
I read about the DVD easter eggs over at Animated-News.
main menu
Watch for a rat to peek his head out from behind two pots. The pot on the left plays [spoil]an ad for Ro-Dead rat killer[/spoil]. The pot on the right plays [spoil]a clip of Brad Lewis naming other possible film titles and of Pixarians pronouncing “Ratatouille”[/spoil].
scene selection
Move the cursor above the cake rat’s head to reveal a pink flower. Click it to play [spoil]a clip of edited film footage mocking Brad Bird’s pet peeve with “Yes!”[/spoil].
The A-N member mentioned only one pot easter egg but also a second cake easter egg I failed to locate.

Ugh!!! What a dissapointing DVD Release. Pixar has really skipped out on these DVD releases. The Cars DVD was preatty bad and bare bones when it comes to extras, but I was expecting more from Ratatouille.
The last really good DVD Release that they had was The Incredibles. It was filled to the brim with cool extras. All the movies before that also had a generous amount of special features and making of goodies. To the point where you could loose yourself and spend hours just on the special features alone, but thoes days seem to be over.
The releases for Cars and Ratatouille are so mediocur and bare bones. I expected more from Pixar, this is just dissapointing. They have had a long history of great DVD Releases, but their latest DVD’s are just embarasing.

Here’s a comment I read over at seward street on the topic of the DVD.

Ya I agree - Ratatouille really should have been a 2 disc set!
I heard that the person in charge of putting the dvd together started later than usual (because of the story change midway through) and that Brad Bird was not in charge of it because of the really demanding schedule of the film.
What -is- sad is that the Ratatouille Video Podcast features more extras than the real dvd.
My guess is that the DVD was rushed out for the holiday season. This seems to be a trend, as the Cars DVD was equally disappointing.
The bluray extra features are as following:
- “Cine-Explore” is an in-movie Java feature that lets you customize your viewing experience with animation briefings, documentary shorts and deleted scenes.
- In “Gusteau’s Gourmet Game,” when the orders are stacking up in Chez Gusteau’s kitchen, you help Linguini move quickly from station to station to prepare the right meal.
Apparently the Cine-explore is where “all the goodies are”
Boo!
So thoes of us without Blue Ray DVD Players are out of luck then. This really bites.
Ahhhh… I’d almost forgotten…
So I hadn’t watched Ratatouille in weeks and was suffering from a severe bout of dehydration as far as “ratness” was concerned, so I went to the theater (with my mom as le official “toter”) to see the film again, even though I tried my best not to view it for a twenty-sixth time in cinemas.
It turned out that my conscience was right. T’was one of the worst viewing experiences of my life, and it’s not just because the darn picture was out of focus for about a third of the film. I swear that I would have shot these two kids if I had a slingshot…
On the plus side, my mom and I were cracking up for about ten minutes straight during the middle of the film for no apparent reason, excluding the apparent reasons. I suppose that the hilarity factor kicks in after one has been succumbed to one too many kiddies’ screams… (eheh)
After that rather eventful dilemma, I was fairly eager to get my paws on that Ratatouille DVD, and by golly I GOT it!!

Yeah, that’s right! I’m bragging because I can!! I don’t usually brag (it’s vain; I hate it), but heck, this is an exception… I was holding it in my hands, dude! I have it right in front of me on my dad’s desk and I’m staring at it 'cause I’m a geek. ![]()
But anyway, onto the DVD itself…
First and foremost, I shall blatantly admit that it is quite devoid of bonus features that it whole-heartedly deserves. Although I haven’t watched all of the special entries on the disc yet, I did have this feeling of emptiness after I hurridly scanned the entirety of the main menu and its diminuative array of counterparts; it was like a black hole. I was thinking, “This is it? There’s gotta be more hidden junk around here somewhere…” Alas, Disney has disappointed us once again, and I am not at all grateful for it.
Nevertheless, what the Ratatouille DVD lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality and entertainment. Let me examine the basic features that, at least, made this less-than-ordinary disc a frog’s leap more enjoyable:
Main Menu - The main menu, in an elegant and eye-catching 2D coat, is pleasant and simple. The backround music, conducted by the harmonious and melodic “Rat Band”, adds for a relaxing, yet jazzy, sensation.
Feature Film - The critics weren’t lying – this production is presented in a high-quality format, as is the crisp and digital surround sound. Obviously, the more advanced (and larger) your television, the more enjoyable the experience. Either way, a clear picture and brilliantly integrated sound effects (and score) are a perfect couple that ultimately make the story itself all the more captivating.
Short Film/Your Friend the Rat - Finally, a Pixar short that is both informative and hilarious! You can sense that the Pixar animators/employees had a fun time conducting this one, especially the whole deal with the “Black Plague”.
My favorite moments include the [spoil]“Shoot the Rats” computer game clip, ending, and the moment where the little girl is dancing around and around with a rat[/spoil]. Heheh.
Bonus Features - Although I have only watched one deleted scene and nothing more, I’m already engulfed in what brilliance there is on this DVD. I’ll have to look at those other bonus features sometime soon…
Easter Eggs - Although PV already mentioned the eggs themselves, I’ll just mention them again…along with a description of how to access each one. Badda-blam:
WARNING: SPOILERS AHOY! NO TAGS!
Easter Egg #1 - On the main menu, wait until a little rat pops up from behind the soup pot on the left side of the screen, then go to either a) Lifted…and then go down until you see a little image/swirl pop up on the pot, or b) Set Up…and go up until you see a little image/swirl pop up on the pot. Select this easter egg to access a little animated clip/commercial advertising a product entitled “Ro-Dead”.
Easter Egg #2 - On the main menu, go to either a) Your Friend the Rat…and go down until you see a little image/swirl pop up on the right soup pot, or b) Bonus Features…and go up until you see a little image/swirl pop up on the right soup pot (at least, I think it’s “Bonus Features”…). When accessed, this easter egg will display a clip in which a Pixar employer (Brad Lewis, I believe) lists a number of possible titles for Ratatouille and where various actors and Pixarians attempt to pronounce the word “Rat-a-too-ee” the correct way.
Easter Egg #3 - Click on “Scene Selection”, stay on page “1-4”, go down to the “1-4” page button, click the left button on your remote control until the “Main Menu” button is highlighted, and then click the right remote control button until you see a little flower appear on the screen. When you access this easter egg…a clip will play that centers on that running joke in which Brad Bird hates the whole “people-saying-“Yes!”-in-movies” ordeal. (I’ll tell you right now that I was laughing for ten minutes straight after I saw this. I kid you not…)
I hope it’s alright that I posted up the easter eggs and their content again, PV. ![]()
END OF SPOILERS
All in all, the content that the Ratatouille DVD possesses is top-notch and fun to view in itself; it’s just that there’s not enough of it to make up for that $20.00+ bucks that us fans spent on the thing. The very fact that there’s no commentary is a sad statement in itself, and I am highly disappointed in Disney for providing us with a DVD that has a lack of adequate bonus features that this wonderful production deserves.
On a side note, check out this snazzy desktop that only Disney Movie Rewads members can get:

Alright, I better stop rubbing the salt in the wound… ![]()
But yeah, I love my DVD!
Sorry for bragging, by the way, guys. I shouldn’t have done that… Eheh. ![]()

Yesterday I got the DVD and found one more special feature not only does 1-4 have an easter egg
try that in 17 (or something) and it has an easter egg featuring the animators cooking and eating its hilarious, when you watch it you’ll see what i mean. Anywyas, I ordered from Disney Movie Rewards a Pixar collectible pin set from buying short films collection AND ratatouille. So everyone should get an account and do that.
RE: the Target Bonus Disc…
I tried putting it in my computer to back it up as well because it looks like a really cheap disc, but couldn’t. It’s not just the normal copy protection… it seems to be protected in another way. But it isn’t that great of an extras disc, so I didn’t bother. Hope it doesn’t go bad next month.
RE: Easter Eggs…
Thanks for the easter eggs info!
martini833 - Really? I tried searching for an extra egg or two on that menu and I couldn’t find one. I’ll look again, now that you mentioned it…
Thanks for the information! ![]()

I got to pick it up today after all. ![]()
Honestly, I’m disappointed in Pixar for not putting the commentary on the regular DVD. I mean, I can’t afford a blu-ray player right now, and I bet there are MANY other people in the same position…
(But do have to say, “Your Friend the Rat” was spectacular!
…not only does 1-4 have an easter egg
try that in 17 (or something)…
Ah ha! You found the second cake easter egg! Well done, martini.
And Mitch, that’s a lovely wallpaper, but I would add a watermark to your image if I were you.
