Some of the most recent commercials on TV, mainly Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops, are proof that no one is abandoning traditional animation. They’re just improving it without taking away its distinctive charm. Hand-drawn characters in a live-action or CG environment! You guys ought to check them out some time.
As for the next hand-drawn film, I’m hoping for Walt Disney Pictures to reintroduce MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob. After all, the characters were animated by some Disney artists. They even look like they came out of the Disney Afternoon line-up! And you know what? Eric Goldberg provided the majority of the original animation for the unreleased Big Time music video, half of which can only be viewed as of today. I think that could be the next combination of live-action and 2D-animation, if Disney followed the example of Frosted Flakes, that is.
I’m sure Disney can tap into the hip-hop genre in a good way, and strictly speaking, I’m sick and tired of today’s rap artists perpetuating the genre as derogatory and distasteful. There are younger children becoming aware of its existence, and it would be nice to let them know how approachable it can be (think MC Hammer).
