I think we can all officially agree that the marketing for this movie really sucks. To me, Disney is just being extremely dishonest with how they’re presenting it to the audience. I can sort of understand why they’re marketing it this way, though. I mean, after reading some early reviewers who were at the test screening for this film including this dude, people are saying that the tone of this film is very similar to Beauty and the Beast, which suggests that there’s bound to be some dark themes and emotional moments in this film. But then again, for me, I don’t really need to read other peoples early reviews who were at a test screening to know that, because I already know that from watching past Disney animated films, even Bolt.
Buuuuut, I’m pretty sure Disney doesn’t want to market the movie that way. I mean, afterall, the marketer’s job is to not really make the movie look good, but to get people in their seats at the theaters. And I’ve learned from past experiences that a trailer is never what it seems, so I’m not going to jump into the whole “Disney is loosing their touch and this seems more like a Shrek-rip-off” bandwagon just yet.
Haha. Well, to be fair, even if the final product doesn’t look “painterly” (I can’t even stomach that word anymore, to tell you the truth) that doesn’t mean that it’s still not going to be visually stunning. And from what I researched and know about this project, Glen Keane’s investments for it sounded way too expensive and risky of what Disney could afford, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out that they did decide to abandon the painted look. I’d be disappointed about it myself too, but seriously, it wouldn’t surprise me and I totally understand why.
I mean, Glen clearly had a vision, yes, but he took way too long to establish it, causing the production of the film to slow down, therefore stalling the entire project for seven years thus angering John Lasseter which eventually got him kicked off the director’s chair. Disney and Pixar aren’t just about art, but they’re also about business. That’s why they absolutely NEED to make business decisions over artistic ones sometimes, otherwise they’ll loose time and money, therefore ruining the entire company. And they’ve already stalled this project for way too long, and whether “painterly” or not, they had to get on with it and finish it anyways.
But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
