Tangled

I think we can all officially agree that the marketing for this movie really sucks. 8D To me, Disney is just being extremely dishonest with how they’re presenting it to the audience. I can sort of understand why they’re marketing it this way, though. I mean, after reading some early reviewers who were at the test screening for this film including this dude, people are saying that the tone of this film is very similar to Beauty and the Beast, which suggests that there’s bound to be some dark themes and emotional moments in this film. But then again, for me, I don’t really need to read other peoples early reviews who were at a test screening to know that, because I already know that from watching past Disney animated films, even Bolt.

Buuuuut, I’m pretty sure Disney doesn’t want to market the movie that way. I mean, afterall, the marketer’s job is to not really make the movie look good, but to get people in their seats at the theaters. And I’ve learned from past experiences that a trailer is never what it seems, so I’m not going to jump into the whole “Disney is loosing their touch and this seems more like a Shrek-rip-off” bandwagon just yet.

Haha. :stuck_out_tongue: Well, to be fair, even if the final product doesn’t look “painterly” (I can’t even stomach that word anymore, to tell you the truth) that doesn’t mean that it’s still not going to be visually stunning. And from what I researched and know about this project, Glen Keane’s investments for it sounded way too expensive and risky of what Disney could afford, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out that they did decide to abandon the painted look. I’d be disappointed about it myself too, but seriously, it wouldn’t surprise me and I totally understand why.

I mean, Glen clearly had a vision, yes, but he took way too long to establish it, causing the production of the film to slow down, therefore stalling the entire project for seven years thus angering John Lasseter which eventually got him kicked off the director’s chair. Disney and Pixar aren’t just about art, but they’re also about business. That’s why they absolutely NEED to make business decisions over artistic ones sometimes, otherwise they’ll loose time and money, therefore ruining the entire company. And they’ve already stalled this project for way too long, and whether “painterly” or not, they had to get on with it and finish it anyways.

But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Sorry for the double post guys! (My bad, I know). But I found a rather interesting article I wanted to share. It’s an interview with John Musker and Ron Clements. They mainly talk about the Princess and the Frog, but they briefly mention Tangled and even praise it!

There’s also going to be another trailer released sometime around this year, which will hopefully be a lot better than the one that was just released.

I was aware of his illness (I read the article) and my deepest sympathies lie with him. But I meant there’s more to this than just his health (the slow pace of development, logistical and financial difficulties to pull off such an ambitious aesthetic within Hollywood’s brutal one-two year development cycle) for being the reason for his ‘demotion’. Sorry if I wrote it out the wrong way.

I think you hit the braid on the princess’ head. It has too much of the wise-*ss snarkiness that plagued many a DW movie.

The horse is named after Russell Crowe’s character in Gladiator? xD

That’s one of my major brickbats with the trailer. I hope to honest Animation God that they don’t go with a Shrek-style pop/soft-rock soundtrack. You only have to listen to the soundtracks of PATF, or KFP, or HTTYD to know that the composers paid homages to the movie’s settings and cultural origins. To have a Pink/Avril Lavigne/Smash Mouth blasting over the credits would kill little artistic capital it has right now. :frowning:

Haha, I read that dude’s comments before. I, too, hope there is more to Tangled than the godawful marketing (and I still have faith in Disney there is). I too hope that the second trailer will be much more convincing (and if they read this thread or the Youtube comments, I’m sure they’ll take that ‘under advisement’).

amen to that sister!
Other than that, unlike most of you, when I saw the trailer in theaters I actually think it made me like it even more I know right? How crazy am I? but I don’t know if it was the 3-D or the big screen, but it just made me warm up to it. It also got to most laughs out of any trailer there. Which is good, because this was a theater full of teenagers who grew up with Toy Story and now they’re accepting Tangled which must mean that Disney’s insane marketing strategies must be doing some good xD.
Danachii- thanks for uploading that picture, I absolutely love Glen Keane’s style and I’m glad to see some concept art ( I don’t know about you guys but I’m so buying that “art of” book for this one. )

Thank God. I knew that there was no way this movie could be totally horrible

YES!!! I’m looking really hard to find a connection between the 2 movies. Animator, director, anything???!! I haven’t found anything yet, but the horse and the dude look WAY too much like Road to El Dorado. I loved the movie btw.

I guess that’s true, but as an aspiring cartoonist myself I have to say that one of the fortunate things for those of us who try to work and study on animation independently from our own homes is that it lets us be able to put all our care into the art without ever once having to worry about the “business”. People who work that way can only do their best by themselves, but they don’t have any executives or deadlines or budget type stuff to deal with, and can do things in their own time and pace. It’s the business that really holds back the art, in a sense.

It’s no wonder I liked Pixar’s short Day & Night so much cause to me it’s animation was innovative in it’s own way, and truly the sort of innovation we were all told Tangled would have.

Tangled looks like it will be worse than MegaMind! Worse than Chicken Little! I will not waste $11 dollars on this, and not even a dollar to rent it at RedBox. I expect more from Disney, at least from their traditionally animated films. Bolt is the only good CGI one, and is probably the only good one Disney will make.

Well I wouldn’t be that harsh about the film. I’ve been hearing now that the film’s story is very good, but I would only consider it a letdown cause of knowing what it could have been. It’s like making promises your not going to keep. But it couldn’t possibly be worse than Chicken Little cause Michael Eisner isn’t running things anymore.

I honestly wouldn’t worry so much about it at this point, guys, seriously. Trailers are just meant to get people excited on what’s yet to come. They never represent what the actual movie is about. 8D Honestly; by now, I’m taking all this marketing stuff as a grain of salt until the movie comes out in five more months. I mean they marketed Toy Story 3 as being a total slapstick comedic, humor palooza, gag-fest but the actual movie ended up being a lot more sentimental and emotional, did it not?

Anyway, the one thing I have to admit; despite the trailer really sucking and being inconsistent with the animation and other visual aspects, I really love the whole: “I really didn’t want to have to do this, but you leave me no choice. Here comes the smoulder. [STICKS OUT LIPS AS THOUGH HE WANTS A KISS FROM HER].” My friend and I cracked up laughing so much at it the first time we saw it. And I actually still chuckle at it whenever I re-watch the trailer. XDD Flynn’s so smooth. Being all smitten with her the first time he sees her and attempts to flirt with her, but Rapunzel just doesn’t even buy into that, LOL.

And I must say, Rapunzel’s a really pretty princess. I love her hair, her dress, her smile and that laugh she does at the end; it’s just darling, and she’s simply adorable. And I love how they made her into an artist who loves painting and drawing, I really don’t think there has been any other Disney princesses who have that trait. It’ll make her really unique and a lot of people can really relate to her on that level. Now I have this feeling that Rapunzel’s going to be my favorite. She sounds like a really strong character. <3 And it looks like Flynn’s really going to have his hands full (if you get what I mean, hehee).

You’re welcome. I’m glad you liked it~ I love looking at Glen Keane’s work too. They’re always so inspirational. <3

Ahh, my bad. I must have somehow mis-read your post. I’m really sorry about that. :X

…In her short screen time in the trailer, I already find Rapunzel attractive.

Wow…um, harsh much?

The movie is being marketed quite badly, but watch the original teaser (the one with just the tower) and maybe even re-watch the trailer you saw, ignoring anything but the clips of the actual movie. The actual movie clips don’t seem that bad…the bad parts are the taglines and pop song. Not the actual film, just marketing.

Plus, as someone else said, trailers do this all the friggin time. Here are the impressions I got from the TS3 trailers:
[spoil]1. Buzz would be Spanish for most of the film.
2. The actual climax would include a train.
3. Buzz turned Spanish after being hit when launched into the air…nothing happened in between.
4. Lotso was a good guy. The main villains were Ken and crew.
5. Andy intentionally sent them to Sunnyside.
6. Potato Head was put in the sandbox by a child.
7. Woody gets sent to Sunnyside along with the rest of them.
8. The main conflict is simply the fact that they’re Andy’s toys and they don’t like daycare…nothing else.
9. The tone would be pretty light hearted and sentimental. [/spoil]

None of these were true. There is a reason they say “Never Trust a Trailer.”

Sorry, have to spoiler tag. People who haven’t watched it yet won’t what to know what impressions aren’t true. TDIT

It won’t be worse than Chicken Little, be mature now. Only Satan would make a movie, especially a Disney movie, WORSE than Chicken Little.

Yes, I agree! He reminds me of Prince Charming from Shrek, or a leaner version of Johnny Bravo.

Haha, we both apologised to each other! xD But yeah, I get what you mean. Hope Glen Keane is able to exert some influence.

YES! I love that shot of her with the frying pan! Who knew a woman about to beat you senseless could look so pretty? 8D

No way! XD Prince Charming just had a really terrible personality and he was completely unlikeable, not to mention really annoying (at least, in my opinion). I have a feeling that Flynn will be a lot more like Naveen. He SEEMS cocky, arrogant and full of himself, but then you start noticing good qualities in him, like how kind, brave and gentle he can be. :3

Btw, I just realized that the one thing that I actually hate about this movie is how it’s coming out on the 24th of November. I’m going to be bombarded with so much college work that I probably won’t even have time to go see it.

I might have to somehow make time, I guess. 'Cause I really don’t want to miss getting the chance to watch it in 3D. D:

Prince Charming was HUGELY more likeable than the Timberlake-voiced King Arthur. Just throwing it out there.

That’s kind of true. Why do they keep reffering to him? It’s creepy that Fiona had a poster of the dude who voices her cousin :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Shrek, but I remember not liking Prince Charming at all. From what I remembered, he came off really annoying to me.

I also found him a bit annoying and vapid in Shrek 2, but then I suppose he was meant to be. It’s just that while watching Shrek The Third, I remember thinking how much better he actually came off when compared to the guy we were meant to be rooting for. :stuck_out_tongue:

^Ah see, I never actually saw Shrek the Third. ^^;; I kept hearing how terrible it was so I refrained from paying to go see it, plus I don’t really have any interest in Shrek anymore, to tell you the truth. I don’t even want to see the 4th one. They just completely dragged it on for way too long that it’s just become tiring and unbearable.

You didn’t miss much with Shrek The Third. I actually only wound up seeing it because it was an inflight movie on a particularly long plane journey I was taking in the summer of 07, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered. Shrek Forever After I haven’t seen, so I can’t comment.
