The Good Dinosaur (2015)

Oh thanks, TDIT. After a while, I was wondering if I was too strong about what I wrote. I understand some people might be upset, which is okay, but I was mostly thinking of other sites saying Pixar has lost it all. I can understand if people liked the old films better, but surely the new ones are at least fine right now, right? The other studios seem to be improving in general and I guess that’s sometimes another reason to keep a close eye on Pixar.

I think because Pixar is young and a lot of their success has come from hard work, perfect timing, and even quite a bit of luck. Maybe they got really excited about some new directors, but then realized there was more training involved than they thought. To be honest, I might have preferred it when we used to not get as much information since we wouldn’t really know this going in. Then again, the info does get me really excited.

Since you mentioned Brave, it does seem almost split at first, with Brenda and Mark’s vision. It might seem confusing because I think there are two morals [spoil]the one about letting Merida and the suitors be who they are[/spoil], and [spoil]Merida learning she must still love and respect her mother who will do anything for her[/spoil]. It’s probably confusing because their almost contradictory. By my second viewing though, what I got was that it was about having a balance between those two things, which it seems you need to do to be a respected, unique individual. So I think it’s about those two morals coming together in a balance way, and maybe it was also confusing because the story wouldn’t work unless all the other characters besides Merida could also relate and find their own faults in themselves.

By the way, what is this Disney rant by Lou Romano? I never knew why he left Pixar.

I might have to rewatch Brave, but that’s quite an interesting way to describe its moral. I was really put off by my first and only viewing because the trailers promised this grand, epic adventure and I had the impression that she was gonna be rebellious and prove that she can be independent and all that. So when the credits finally rolled, I was like, Huh?

The scope was so small (she just went to the forest, back to the castle, a slight detour to Morshu’s den, then back to the forest), she returns to matriachal control, and there was nothing particularly memorable or amazing about the experience. I felt cheated (again, I might have to rewatch, this is my impression after just one viewing).

At least with Monsters U, you sort of had an inkling of what is going to happen if you’ve seen the first movie. The joy is in finding out how Mike and Sulley got to where they are. You are sort of prepared for the “twist” in the moral, that this is not the typical saccharine “You can succeed in anything if you believe and try hard enough” fable.

I felt like I was promised a plate of haggis and got a pea instead.

Re Lou Romano, he left Pixar to join Laika in 2009. Around the same time, he allegedly wrote a blog post praising Kung Fu Panda over Wall-E.

He also posted a comic of Pixar characters in chains under Mickey Mouse, according to Upcoming Pixar, although I haven’t seen this.

Another one he did was an unflattering parody of Disney’s corporate practises, which he has since removed from his blog. However, thanks to the power of Internet archiving and one of our wonderful former mods, Sky, you can view it on this page (Scroll down, it’s three quarter way, I’m not posting it directly here, cos it contains a swear word).

I’ve also saved a copy on my hard disk in case some Pixar loyalist or Pixarian complains and gets tinypic to remove it. Not to tarnish Lou or anything (I just discovered he voiced Dash’s teacher today, and I love his role as Linguini). But just in case someone wants to see it and know more about this saga, at least there will always be a copy still in existence.

I’m a firm believer that whatever goes on the Internet, is there forever. So don’t post anything which is hateful or mean, unless you’re prepared to back it up.

You can read more in this thread. It’s also an interesting time capsule of former members and me in my younger days, back when I was a naive fanboy and didn’t question the studio’s quality or methods as much as I do now.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the bit about Lou Romano, TDIT! Kind of sad to hear that bit, especially the Mickey Mouse part. :open_mouth:

I can see where you’re coming from about Brave after one viewing. Mine was…similar, but in my situation, I put myself at fault because I was caring too much about what other people thought, and it affected my thoughts. For some reason I loved a lot more on a second viewing, and since. But with you, you had a certain impression from the trailers, which makes more sense than in my case. Particularly the teaser was kind of misleading. I can understand what you mean by feeling cheated. If you see it a second time, there’s a chance you might like it better now that you know what to expect, but no worries if you don’t. It should have possibly been promoted more as a tale of family; more focus on people accepting Merida AND Merida being a more responsible/respectful youth (essentially, both sides have to learn to grow up).

So for The Good Dinosaur, it looks like one of my early theories that the dinosaurs would talk, but not the humans MIGHT be correct. Maybe. It sounded like that would be a possibility after hearing some of the D23 news, but I’ve been wrong before.

And I think I now know why we sometimes don’t get a Pixar teaser a year in advance anymore. It seems like we don’t get one until the final director/story fix-ups have been confirmed. Cars 2 was having story problems back when Toy Story 3 was released, and same with The Good Dinosaur. However, Ratatouille and Brave were re-worked a year and a half in advance, so of course a teaser with the new vision could be ready a year in advance. I know Up always had Pete Docter, but I recall it was the one everyone was most worried about at the time, so the teaser was about 2 months late. Just random speculations here :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think lou romano “left Pixar.” I think he was asked to.

Bob Peterson has some additional comments of significance. twitter.com/bob__peterson

He actually seems very excited at whatever his next project is.

I’m not sure if it’s my place to bring it up, but I’m wondering if anyone’s discussed the potential clash between creationists/evolutionists that this movie could spark. In my case, I don’t mind either way especially since it sounds like they’re taking a more cartoonish, fanciful approach with the setting (or at least hopefully), but I’m really not looking forward to hearing my friends’ backlash against Pixar doing a film that plays with evolutionary concepts. I’ve been scared of it from day 1 in fact

Huge news about this (and other) films

First year in a long time without a Pixar film, then. This is sad, mostly…

Yep, since 2005… I’m a lot bummed but at the same time uplifted to hear this, I was feeling uneasy since The Good Dinosaur was set to release fairly soon. So I guess this confirms that Peterson was knocked off the project? :frowning: I’m really concerned, but I hope this gives them time to fully flesh the movie out. But I’ll be a dinosaur myself by the time it releases :frowning:

Is Inside Out untouched then? Does this make it the next Pixar movie release??

I am really so glad that they’re taking some time to fix whatever problems they were having. Although the Pixar fangirl part of me really wants to cry. I’m still really excited for The Good Dinosaur, though. Looking forward to eventually seeing what the Pixar guys have in store.

I really suspected something like this coming. No trailer, poster, or even a still yet? It was suspicious.

I agree with K9Girl. Nothing much to say besides, I really love Pixar and their films. Really, I don’t doubt them, and while eight years ago I groaned when Cars was delayed a year, I felt so happy about this decision. This proves Pixar isn’t cheap. I seriously love Pixar right now for what they chose to do. Really…I think they’re taking one for the team again; they don’t bite off more than they can chew.

Thanks, Pixar. You really don’t ever want to let me down. . I’ll keep that in mind as I apply for your company a few years from now. I hope I can be a part of you.

Are we still getting the Good Dinosaur teaser on the Monsters University DVD?

That’s actually a possibility. Cars and Planes both had their trailers almost a full two years before they came out.

On second thought, Inside Out might get it first since it is now the next Pixar film.

The Monsters University DVDs/Blu-Rays are already packed and ready to be distributed, so I greatly doubt they’ll change the planned contents over recent events.

On the other hand, maybe they never had a Good Dinosaur trailer ready when they made those copies, so it won’t be there anyway.

^ Yes, more or less, that’s what I was thinking, but then I forgot that Pixar has done the sort of thing before. Not common, and I doubt we’ll see a teaser next month, but I suppose there was a slim possibility at first.

It’s bittersweet for me. It’s kind of sad knowing we won’t get a Pixar film next year, but I’m even happier knowing that means it will be amazing (obviously that’s my faithful assumption). But hey, patience is a good virtue to have…And that way How to Train Your Dragon 2 can dominate the box office without us stressing over one or the other possibly not doing well. And we’ll get Big Hero 6, which I’m already dying to see.

I have to say, the news of TGD’s date getting pushed back saddened me a bit. But I remind myself of all the other companies offering up awesome films next year, the possibility that Pixar might still cook up a short film or two, and the fact that this extra time is probably for the best, I feel a little better now. The shock just really got me (I actually reacted quite similarly when I heard Cars was getting pushed back until '06, and I wasn’t even Pixar-obsessed back then!). And especially since I’m highly anticipating this one. I mean, you guys may or may not know this, but I love dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures (which partially why I love Dinosaur and the Ice Age films), so even though I’m totally excited for all of Pixar’s great-sounding upcoming releases, my Natural History nerdiness has added to my interest on TGD. Despite it may be quite a wait, I look forward to it all the same! It’ll just feel really weird to get used to there not being a Pixar film out…

I’ve put my mind at ease about this. The main disappointment is that when it’s out I will have become an adult

But it’s true that 2014 looks to be a really promising year for movies in general, and knowing Pixar they won’t leave us empty handed one way or another. There’ll surely be a short or some news next year to look forward to, as there always is

Well, I will miss there not being any Pixar movies out next year, as it’s still a bit of an Event for me. I mean, I take the day off of work and everything. BUT, if this will help improve the movie and make it better then that’s okay if they take the extra time

Surprisingly, we got us a teaser poster. And I was just thinking about this last night…

The artwork is pretty much how I had imagined from the few bit we had seen. Not sure I’ve warmed to it yet.
