Did a search and didn’t see a thread for this. The Mickey Mouse short was so iconic and a beloved piece of movie magic for Disney, wondering what you all think of the live action version starring Nic Cage? It’s from the same team that brought us National Treasure (Cage/Jerry Bruckheimer/Jon Turtletaub) and the trailerlooks like it’ll be fun and action-packed. Thoughts?
Whenever I think of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Disney, I can only think of Mickey Mouse. I don’t know what this new film is, but it is not The Sorcerer’s Apprentice I knew as a child! I would much rather see Disney do another sequel to Fantasia than this film.
Yeah, I’m stuck on the “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” of Fantasia. It’s nice to see that there appears to be a little nod to the past version - I caught a glimpse of live brooms cleaning a flooded area with the boy stumbling around in a panic.
But this probably would have been better if it took place in a different time period, rather than modern New York City.
Aside, this still seems intriguing. Generic, but intriguing.
I don’t know. I’m usually quick to bash remakes and sequels but I really don’t know.
I think it looks interesting, I will give it a shot. But Nicholas Cage is a little…well I’m not going to say anything!
Haha, I know what you mean about Nicolas Cage, but I think since he’s re-teaming with the guys who made a pretty entertaining movie of his, I think he’ll be quite good in this. I did notice the little homage to Fantasia in there - which is pretty cool! Definitely hope there are more of those little nods in the movie…
When I first heard about this months ago, I thought it was gonna be a live-action remake of old of the Mickey Mouse cartoon. Now I’m dissapointed.
Awww! Don’t be disheartened yet. It’s so hard to really base a whole movie on a 9 minute short, you know? I feel like maybe they kept the theme of the wizard and his apprentice who can’t control his magic and chaos ensues (but with dragons and other creatures in NY coming alive) and are expanding on it - but like I said before, I feel like they should and will pay homage to the original! Let’s wait for another trailer at least before completing writing it off…
Yeah you’re probably right. But they better have the brooms, because they were my favorite part from the original.
Edited. There is no need to quote the entire post. – Mitch
I don’t quite know what to think of this. On the one hand, I am quite excited about the plot (It sounds like Enchanted, with dragons and monsters in New York), and Nic Cage is one of my fave actors (he’s appearing in a lot of movies lately).
On the other, I’m annoyed that they used the title of the Fantastia short, cos’ like some people have said, they misunderstood it to be a live-action remake. It would’ve been better if they had named it differently or changed the cast. It also looks too similar to teen fantasy flicks like Harry or Percy, and I felt it pandered to the adolescent market.
All that said, though, I’ll see if a better trailer comes down the road. I liked the ending with Nic miming “A little.” That was brilliant timing and got the biggest laugh out of me.
Buzz&Woody - Well, you can see briefly a scene with the brooms & water in the trailer So it’s there! Perhaps we’ll get a little bit more of an idea of how it’s inspired by Fantasia in future movie clips - I do have a feeling it’s all about the magic.
TDT - I feel like you’re one of the few who count Cage as a “favorite” actor! Honestly, I kinda like Jay Baruchel (the apprentice) - he was in Tropic Thunder and had bit parts in a bunch of other movies. He’s also got a lot of movies coming out - How to Train Your Dragon and She’s Out of My League are released in a couple weeks here. I look forward to seeing how he & Nic work as apprentice and sorcerer.
Yeah, I guess I’m weird that way. The first movie I watched him was The Rock, and I found myself siding with his character; a nerdy geek forced to fight terrorists with Sean Connery. I watched most of his 90s movies after that (like Con Air and Face/Off) and thoroughly enjoyed them too. He’s been in a lot of sucky movies lately, but I do admire his versatility (as an action hero in National Treasure and a voice actor in G-Force and Astro Boy being recent examples), so yeah, that’s what I feel. I want to watch Leaving Las Vegas and Bad Lieutenant when I find the time.
I thought the apprentice looked familiar. I watched the ‘She’s out of my league’ trailer and I liked the concept. And I didn’t know he was voicing Hiccup till I saw the series of actor/character posters Dreamworks always releases since Kung Fu Panda. That kid came out of nowhere, I tell you. Could be the next Jon Heder. We’ll see.
Nicolas Cage please GTFO.
…Jay Baruchel. …You can stay.
I saw the trailer before Alice in Wonderland (awful) and all I could think is “Nicolas Cage stars as Nicolas Cage in The Nicolas Cage’s Apprentice”
hahahah
I saw a trailer before She’s Out of My League and was glad because I hadn’t yet looked one up for myself. Except I was hoping to see some stuff with the brooms and was disappointed. So thank you OP for linking us to this trailer. That little bit near the end, I enjoyed x]
No problem!
thedriveintheatre - Leaving Las Vegas is a great movie - definitely recommend you watch it! And I don’t think you’re weird for liking him, lol. I enjoyed a lot those same movies (I LOVED The Rock)…he is a pretty great action star but still was able to show solid, dramatic acting work too, as well as voice work and comedy. He has gotten a bad rap for his most recent movies, but he’s bound to have some hits again soon. Maybe he’ll start this year - he’s got a ton of new movies coming out besides this one!
Nicolas Cage please GTFO.

Seems like we got lotsa haters on Mr Cage…? Fairy’ nuff. I’m not personally sold on Jay Baruchel on the other hand… his nasal voice gets to me, and I’ve never heard of him before. But he fits the ‘mr-nice-nerd’ role, and I am looking forward to him in HTTYD, so maybe he might win me over. SOoML (sorry I use abbreviations) doesn’t look too bad either.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, I really hope so. At least he’s gotten rid of the mullet. I’m more excited for this than any of his other films (Season of the Witch and Kick-*ss’ trailer didn’t wow me much), so I hope he impresses big time (I like his wizard character from the trailer so far).
I kind of like Kick-A** - but that might be because I like those kinds of movies. I remember reading an early review that raved about it and Nicolas Cage’s performance. I’ll have to find it.
So the movie will be at WonderCon in April - betting that new footage will be shown there, maybe a new trailer as well? So looking forward to seeing reactions to that!
A new trailer is out: http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/the-sorcerers-apprentice/international-trailer
I like this one actually - explains the whole premise much better and still looks really cool.
As every one I first thought Mickey Mouse! I watched the trailer and I was like “Oh where’s the dancing brooms?” kinda meh on the trailer I’ll stick with the original
