The one while Ken is modeling for Barbie. I believe it was “Freak Out”. I hate both songs, and the one in the trailer.
And I didn’t dislike them because they were popular, but because I just dislike the appearance of irrelevant well known songs in a well established series. Actually, I never like it in any movie. But in Toy Story 3? Seriously? But that’s all I have. I can only speak for myself.
Lol, it’s not, but I have some sort of nostalgic fondness for it cuz they used to make my sister dance to it in dance class. Yeah, of all things to dance to.
And I thought “We Will Rock You” seemed unfitting for ballet!
I think I might have been too harsh on TS3 with regards to song choices. Yes, I kinda liked Ken’s disco number, and it didn’t detract from the movie so much. I can’t be a hypocrite, I really enjoyed Lionel Richie’s ‘Say You Say Me’ number from the upcoming Rio, for example. So perhaps pop culture songs, if used effectively, and sparingly in the right context, would be alright.
But have a listen to A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc or Up. There’s barely any contemporary (or dated) music to ‘snap you out’ of the moment (“Who’s that singer? Oh yeah, Elvis Presley, etc.”). All instrumentals and orchestral pieces (at least from memory). The use of pop-culture numbers for ‘cheeseball’ effect is mostly the territory of Dreamworks and Blue Sky and ‘lesser studios’, so really we shouldn’t be discounting TS3 either if they so chose to go down that path, either, if only for one or two minor scenes, right?
But again, I’ll reiterate that it’s not such a big deal in my opinion compared to the other shortcomings (like the protracted end scene or Lotso’s character).
I liked all those songs. Even if I didn’t, they were only used for a few seconds, at the most half a minute. They fit the scene, and worked much better if there was an original song IMO.
I prefer original songs. It just keeps me drawn into the universe. If I hear existing songs I am familiar with, I feel the need to face-palm, which is distracting in itself. I get very annoyed by little things like that. RN wrote new songs for ABL, MI, and the first two TS movies. Why wasn’t that the case here(save “We Belong Together” in the end credits)?
I’m not bashing on the movie. This detail was just very distracting and somewhat confusing to me.
I don’t have a problem with original songs, I like original songs. But there’s a place for everything, and I don’t see any problem with the songs they used for the 30 seconds while Ken was showing off his wardwrob and the like 7 when Ken and Barbie met. They fitted in there, and why would you write an original song for those?
I think I agree with the general consensus here. I laughed at both scenes in theaters but I tend to roll my eyes now…they’re just hard to get a second laugh out of me. And sort of out of nowhere and distracting. The toys will have some saga going on then it cuts to Barbie and Ken being total goofballs with this loud music blasting…it felt like something out of Shrek.
Damn, I should definitely make sure to visit this thread more often! I’ve missed several pages of posts! Nonetheless, I can see that my name has been mentioned quite a few times, but its possible that I’ve missed questions or interesting opinions, so if anyone wants to ask me anything or whatever, one would have to reply to this post. And I’ll try to be more active here from now on.
You just managed to put down in words, something that I’ve tried to express for quite some time. Thanks! Yes, that scene in particular was a bit of disappointment. I had expected Ken and Barbies final development as characters, when Ken was to change his mind and Barbie was to prove herself capable of something more than funny comments, being a bit more deep. Pixar always creates characters whose decisions and motivations feel perfectly realistic. That’s why we even love the Pixar bad guys. But in this case, it feels that Ken developed as a character simply because he was afraid of getting his clothes torn asunder. Maybe I missed something…
I have to admit, though, that I did have a lot of fun when I watched the film for the first time and the scene in which Barbie, dressed up as Ken, walks with those high-heels or something. And this henchmen sees it, but ignores it thinking “it’s just Ken”. Hilarious!
Afraid so. Had he only cared about the clothes, he would have never bothered returning. He basically sums it up with his speech when he returns. THAT’S where the developing occurs.
Dudes, I’m late. Sorry about that. Just to get my two cents in - you’ve got some really valid points there and I respect them. I like Toy Story 3, but not as much as, say, How To Train Your Dragon. I just liked TS3 'cuz it wraps the trilogy up nicely.
I understand that you have different beliefs, but you’re not going to respect them over different opinions on a movie? I’m sorry, but that’s really immature.
The sad thing about this is that I respect you’re opinion. I respect that you don’t like Bolt and tangled but like TS3. Because that’s your choice and opinion. Why you’d dislike someone who disagrees with you really baffles me, I don’t quite understand it.
