Really wish I could see it first day, but school’s keeping me preoccupied. I’ll probably see it on Friday or Saturday. Asked my classmates about it and all but one thought 9 was too weird to watch. One of them forgot what the title was and called it “that movie with the living sock that has to save the world”.
I really think 9 is the first of its kind. It’s a 3-D animated movie (anime doesn’t count) that’s dark and violent and seems like the plot is…serious. It’s just plain different, and I’m surprised some people are more excited for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs than this.
Although I’m somewhat afraid to see it, I’ve read several reviews from people saying the story wasn’t all that great, but, no matter. It still seems like a pretty exceptionable animation.
I saw it yesterday. Here is my review: 9 review Part 1: It was SWEET! I loved it! It was kinda scary at some parts, too! I didn’t like the begining; it was cheesy, I mean, how it all started so suddenly. In some parts of the movie, it felt like that 5 was in LOVE with 9. I mean, really, 5 was grabbing on to 9 at some points, and [spoil]he kept on saving 9 and not the others; besides, that’s how 2 died - 5 pushed 9 out of the way, and 2 died, yet 5 was mad at 9[/spoil].
Also, what I’m about to say has MAJOR spoilers:
[spoil]Some many died in this! Some people cried in my theater when 5 was killed. REALLY! Some lady with a little kid did, some teenager with her boyfriend did, my sister did, even a guy cried when 5 died! They should of kept 2 in the movie longer, and 2 and 6 barley played part in it. I’m kinda glad 1 died, he was EVIL! It was his fault 2 and 5 died[/spoil].
I saw it, and I am going to be COMPLETELY honest, I really didn’t like it that much. I mean, it was OK animation-wise, but the story itself, just didn’t suit me. Literally within the first minute of the movie, it seemed like it was just action, and I seem to love how a little “toy sock” can walk and understand his surroundings like an adult within 5 minutes of his creation.
There was little back story, and, in movies, that’s what I love the most - a back story. I hated how this was 90% action because almost every other minute there was a robot attacking. I really wanted a storyline, not a action packed movie. And the ending, I won’t even get started there, I just can’t believe more than half of the people died, and at the end, 9, 7, 3, and 4 were kind of just like “oh, well, civilization as we never really knew it is gone, what now?”.
Well, at the end of the short film, [spoil]only 9 was left, so the end of the movie had more of them alive. We didn’t really see much of how they had to adjust after that. That would be in the events after the movie.[/spoil]
Anyway, I really liked it. It’s getting split reviews from critics. Some people love it, and others don’t. It was visually astounding though.
Search for the original short film - I think it’s on YouTube…
That’s fine, then. I like both, equally and differently. I guess this will just be one of those movies where the opinions will be mixed (but aren’t most movies like that?).
Just curious, did you see the short before or after the movie? I saw it before. Actually, I would be interested in hearing from everyone once they’ve seen the feature which they saw first, and what they thought of both…
Buzz is Right here, I’m not offended by by anyone’s personal opinion about a movie. So long as you’re polite, I don’t think anyone’s going to be offend because you didn’t like 9.
Actually, it would be interesting if this thread had a poll, so that we could track how many people liked the film, how many didn’t, and how many were indifferent.
lord_zedd, in my opinion, [spoil]the other characters did care. They certainly cared enough to arrange a ceremony for their fallen comrades… [/spoil]
The whole movie is dark, and the ending is sad, but logical enough. If this movie was about 9 people in a post-apocalyptic world fighting machines and was live action, it would have been rated far higher by the MPAA, and it’s already rated pretty high. Like in the original short film, [spoil]at the end the characters that do die, are set free, essentially, the machine had trapped their spirits, but at the end they are released.[/spoil]
The film’s definitely not for everyone, and I understand that. The showing that I was at was pretty much all college students. I think even if some don’t like the story, a lot of animation students are going to want to see this one for the visuals.
It’s kind of one of those movies where it is a tragedy, but at the end there is a small inkling of hope. [spoil]Here we know that with the machine destroyed, 9, 7, 3 and 4, will not have that threat looming over them, so they can start to rebuild what little is left. [/spoil]
It’s mixed… I’ve heard it described by some as kind of bittersweet… I think everyone will form their own opinion. It’s not all totally down though, with no light at the end of it all.
I found it ended well, considering the world the characters had to contend with.
Also, I had added something on the end of my last post, but since you responded so soon, I’m not sure if you would have seen it.
I’m gonna go catch it tomorrow, I heard from Mitch that it was AMAZING (haha, it’s true, she did a caps lock rant) so I’m pretty excited to see it. I honestly don’t know anything about it except for the setting, so I’m anxious to see what happens.
Wow, I’m both tense and excited after hearing the mixed reviews from fellow Planeteers. Although I’m in a 9 mood (points to sig and avatar) right now, I’m frustrated it’s not had a release (and looking at upcoming movies, not likely for a long time) in Oz yet. The Yanks and S’poreans have it good.
I had a little look at the IMDb, thedriveintheatre, and according to that the release of 9 in Australia is scheduled for the 21st of September, 2010. That’s one ridiculous delay if that is the case.
We’ve got to wait until the end of next month, and I do think I want to see it when it comes out even just for the atmosphere of the movie. The mixed reviews are understandable but I’d still like to see it for myself.
I agree with you 100% there, I thought the visuals and the animation were utterly outstanding, I just thought the story was weak, and I really like a good story in a film.
9 review Part 2:
Anyways, the visuals were amazing! The story was deep, and [spoil]in 5’s death, it felt like you could FEEL the fear in his eye[/spoil]. Anyways, that’s all I have to say about 9; I give it a strong 10/10!
