I agree. I think it would have been better for me, as an obsessive-compulsive TS fan if it had been an independent Pixar film, with there being no or a totally different third TS. I love the movie overall, and I’m trying to nag as little without lying or overdoing my pessimism. I’m very confused…
The ads for Best Animated Feature are popping up. I just saw two on the same website for How To Train Your Dragon and Megamind.
I worry that the marketers believe we already have Best Animated Feature in the bag, and are only focusing their resources to Best Picture - not a likely feat for an animated film, with those biased fat cats in the Academy. Disney’s mad if they think Alice in Wonderland will be nominated for Best Picture, btw.
And I think NOW is the perfect time to revive this thread.
So, Toy Story 3 has been nominated for: Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, and Best Sound Editing! And Day and Night was nominated for Best Animated Short as well!!!
We done it! I was split over whether Toy Story 3 would be nominated for Best Picture, but we’ve done it!
I was bouncing off the walls when I found out. I remember 2 years ago being FURIOUS for WALL-E not being nominated (I mean, 6 nominations plus screenplay but no best picture is almost unheard of ), and being really happy when Up! got the BP nomination last year, and now Toy Story 3 has done it!
I wonder if it is a case now of “if” or “when” Pixar take home best picture…
I was disapointed with WALL-E not being recognized as well.
I know that this year that Toy Story 3 won’t get Best Picture, but it’s only a matter of time before an animated feature (from any studio) claims the prize. It’s just taking baby steps to get to that point.
I think either True Grit, The Social Network, or Inception will get it.
^ Inception won’t and True Grit would be like the fourth-fifth option. It’s either The Social Network (more likely) or The King’s Speech (I hope).
My thought exactly, Spirit! I loved The King’s Speech, and the Social Network was good to me but not as good as The King’s Speech. If it can’t be Toy Story, I hope it’s The King’s Speech all the way. But I hope Hailee Steinfeld gets it for Best Supporting Actress.
I’m rooting for Black Swan or The King’s Speech, but I have a horrible feeling that The Social Network will get Best Picture.
I’d want The King’s Speech to win, but the Oscar’s don’t really root for British movies so I bet The Social Network gets it.
I guarantee that Wall-E would have been nominated for Best Pic if they’d had 10 nominees that year - and it might have been nominated with 5 nominees if they hadn’t had the Animated Feature category as an excuse to leave it out.
I spend way too much time reading Awards Daily, and the general feeling there is that Best Picture is between The Social Network and The King’s Speech. Social Network cleaned up with the critics’ awards, but King’s Speech won the Producers Guild (which overlaps some membership with the Academy), and got the most Oscar nominations this year. TKS is the only Best Pic nominee I’ve seen besides TS3, and since the odds are against TS3 winning Best Pic, I’d be happy to see TKS win. (I’d be even happier to see Firth/Rush/Carter all win their categories.)
I’m totally pulling for “How to Train Your Dragon” to win Best Score, however!
Glad that it got nominated, but I’m still annoyed with best animated feature. An animated feature nominated for Best Picture means it’s best animated feature by default. They should’ve changed the name to “best animated feature that isn’t best picture” and nominated Tangled instead of TS3. Or just drop the category altogether, it just bugs me.
Exactly.
I wish Tangled had gotten something other than best song. That, and I hate that animated features aren’t “adult” or “good” enough to just go with the rest of the movies. And IMO, TS3 has no chance for best pic against The King’s Speech and The Social Network. This is no opinion; TS3 will get womped. Anyway…
It will get womped, just like seven other movies. So there shouldn’t be any other nominees in that category? Just The King’s Speech and The Social Network competing?
Getting nominated is a reward on itself.
Sorry. I just don’t think TS3 has any chance of winning. Point blank.
^It doesn’t. Which is part of my point.
I’ve just looked the Pixar Planet nominations. Both you and I are nominated on categories we know don’t have any chance of winning. Aren’t you proud enough of the nomination? I certainly am. Should we clear all the nominees and leave only the ones that REALLY stand a chance?
One of those movies will win. But does it make it better than the rest? Those are the 10 best movies of the year (at least for the Academy). And I think that’s enough for any filmmaker. God, I wish I could feel that glory!
Nvm
Sorry, I’m not into internet acronyms What does NVM stand for?
I’m so very, very sorry to any fans of TSN here, but I want to rant and say that it is possibly the worst nominee in the Awards among the films I’ve seen this year. It is not life-affirming, the characters are uncharming, and the length was gruelling. Plus, the movie portrayed the protagonist (note I’m refraining from using the word ‘hero’) as a copyright-thief, the lowest of the low among creatives. And I have always disliked FB for its frequent privacy violations, so I’m not exactly thrilled by the subject matter either.
Heck, I’ve never seen The King’s Speech, but I want it to win so badly. Well, and Toy Story 3 too. I don’t know about 127 hours, but it feels to me like a melodrama-milker. I have no idea what Black Swan is about, or what’s the big deal about it other than Portman pulling a ‘Machinist’ (and if there are any fans here, please enlighten me and challenge my preconceived notions). Same goes for The Fighter and any other Oscar Baits this year. God, there are a lot of Oscar Baits.
But really, Disney basically shot themselves in the foot by submitting both TS3 and Tangled. Granted, it’s a good strategy to show your trump card and have one in reserve, but thanks to Woody and the gang, 'Punzel and her friend never stood a chance.
“Roberto” from Cartoon Brew best summed up my sentiments about ‘The Big Three’ this year:
I don’t mean to sound bitter or anything, but never have I had such a resentment about Pixar this year. And I feel awful about it. It’s like Toy Story 3 was almost a ‘shoo-in’, and as a result of its double-nom, odds are it won’t get Best Pic again, and it’ll kick out the more deserving HTTYD and LOTG for Best Animated.
The characters aren’t supposed to be charming. They’re still interesting and motivated and full of life. I think one of the best things about it is that it doesn’t play up Mark to any opinionated extent. He’s open to the viewers’ interpretations. Personally, I thought he was a great character and many of his actions felt justified in terms of his personality and thought process, but I know that many people (such as you) felt differently. I guess in that sense, the way you interpret the movie could make it a love/hate film. But it shouldn’t be denied that it’s a well made movie as a whole.
But anyway, I love that Cartoon Brew comment you posted. Although I do love TS3, I can see its flaws easily. I think overall HTTYD and Tangled are more solid (but not necessarily as daring) films and deserve more recognition.
