Toy Story 3 Academy Award for Best Picture

The Oscars.go site, a live feed from ABC network backstage at the Oscars.com website, while the post ceremony Governor’s Ball is going on, just played a 3-4 minute featurette on Toy Story. This was apparently not part of the main ABC-tv network show, but was it shown at some point tonite anyways on ABC? or is it just being shown online? It was played about 10 minutes after the last award presentation: Best Picture. Rick Harrison is or was the announcer for it and it was called “The Road to the Oscars”. As I see it again now, he claims it was first aired an hour before the show started.

The featurette started out by showing takes from the movie. The announcer talked about how emotional the movie was while they showed a few of the relevant scenes, especially towards the end. John Lasseter came on for about a minute and talked about what this third installment meant to the series. “Woody and Buzz are us (the writers). There is a little of both of them in us. … They see that this is the end of the line for them and Andy…” They showed Tim Allen and Tom Hanks onstage during the voiceover recording over a year ago. I don’t remember seeing the actual Director during this short. And they didn’t show a lot of technical people or scriptwriters or any obvious pictures of Pixar itself. An unexpectedly generous treat!

As disappointed as I am to see that the most financially successful animated film didn’t win Best Picture, I have to refrain from any critical remarks made at TKS as I personally thought it was a really good film. Better than Toy Story 3? Of course not. But I don’t think the reason it won was because of it being “oscar bait” as some people on the other forums I visit my claim.

Nonetheless I do agree with Pricklepants about an animated feature probably not winning BP soon. I think we’re more likely to see a Doc or a Foreign Film take the prize than a “Kid’s Cartoon Film”.

That just about sums it up right there. (Nice username, by the way  )

At least Best Picture went to “The King’s Speech”, a movie I actually liked. Nevertheless, “Toy Story 3” was truly most deserving of the Best Picture award, and it seems that the Academy is intent on treating animators and their work as second-class citizens of the film world forever.

While “Toy Story 3” had a slim chance for Best Picture, “Day & Night” was absolutely robbed. It is an absolute travesty that a film with such clever art direction, unique story, great humor, and mainstream appeal did not win Best Animated Short Film. I thought Pixar at least had this one in the bag.

Whatever - none of these awards really matter in the end anyway. Award or no award, truly great films will stand the test of time - for example, the films of Alfred Hitchcock.

Anyway, congratulations to Pixar on the Best Animated Feature win and to Randy Newman for Best Original Song.

I don’t know about Day and Night, though. While I can certainly vouch for Toy Story 3 being Oscar worthy and in my ideal world Day and Night would’ve won BAS, you have to keep in mind that this is the Oscar judges we’re talking about here. They really don’t like that kind of “feel good moral” that Day and Night was slightly anvilicious about at the end of their short which is why they gave it to an abstract film like The Lost Thing. And, personally, I did quite enjoy the poetic flow of that film available here.

Man this was an exciting award season!

And as for the Winning of Best Picture? Don’t worry some day, an animated film will get there. These things take time!

I know it’s a shame it didn’t win Best Picture, and that Day and Night was robbed, but come on, don’t be too bitter! TS3 still got 2 Oscars, which is a BIG achievment imo, and I now think after 2 noms in a row (and 2 snubs in the case of Ratatouille and Wall-E), it’s becoming a matter of WHEN rather than IF an animation wins BP…it’s just gonna take some time. Like, it’s a rock that’s going to be a tree

Ah well, phooey for Toy Story 3. I wasn’t really expecting it though.

:open_mouth: Okay now we have a problem, dare I say a worse one than TS3 not winning the Oscar. I mean, two newbies with almost identical usernames, WHOAAAAA… Total confusion to ensue, good luck PixarPlanet 8D

Anyway, I agree with you there, my twin brother/sister  Great films will stand the test of time, there’s no doubt about that. Decades from now, the Toy Story trilogy will still be replayed to generations after generations of children, and adored around the world by kids and adults alike. Well, that’s the plan for my (future) household, at least

^ Oh, you’re right. Confusions will ensue 8D

Well, the good thing that can come out of this is that three animated films will have been denied the coveted title now. Sooner or later, the Academy is gonna be embarassed enough to finally give the award to a deserving animated film.

I’m gunning for it to be either Brave or HTTYD 2.

This one was the biggest opportunity (which still was like… 3% 8D) Now we’ll have to wait for years.

But hey! At least this year’s competition was worthy. Neither The Hurt Locker nor Avatar deserved the prize over Up last year.

The Awards were fun this year. I liked that real old guy (diden’t catch his name) who presented some of the awards. He was funny.

^ Kirk Douglas, a legend. I loved every second with him, and when Melissa Leo vowed before him, I was thinking about doing that same thing.

Hey atleast a great movie won The Kings Speech is amazing if you havent seen it go watch it!Sad TS3 Lost but atleast it lost to an awesome movie and it was still great to see Randy Newman get an Oscar for We Belong Together and to watch him perform it.

I love this spirit! I’m was disapointed at a few awards, and happy about a few as well. There’s 6,000 voters in the Academy, all with different opinions than us. One day an animated film will win, it’ll just take some time.

I don’t mind that TS3 didn’t win. i was very happy that it got nominated for best picture. but great job to lee Unkrich for taking home the Best Animated Film.

as I mentioned in other post I just was expecting to see TS3 winning only 1 oscar, but it got 2, I am more than pleased and satisfied

Thankfully, it wasn’t the Social Network. Anyways, it was tough competition, not gonna lie, so best of wishes to the winner.

Please tell me there is someone else on this site who doesn’t hate The Social Network.

I think people are forgetting that just being nominated for best pic is a big deal. That in itself is prestigious, and I’m glad that Toy Story 3 is in the ranks. After all, The Wizard of Oz lost best picture (To my favorite movie, I might add  jk), but that doesn’t mean it’s not a classic.
