Well this has a pretty obvious answer, considering where I’m posting at. Not to mention that aside from the moderately decent How To Train Your Dragon (although YMMV about the first & second Shreks), Dreamworks’ cultivation in cinematography has been on par with some of the greatest Ed Wood films.
However, this topic is not intended to needlessly bash Dreamworks films (come on, they’re at least they’re trying right?) but instead to debate which will be the higher grossing film of 2010. I mean, we all know that the only reason why Dreamworks is releasing Shrek Forever After one month before June 18 is just to compete with the super awaited Toy Story 3. So the question I’m asking is, sadly, is not about the quality which do you think will make more money? My moneys on and for Toy Story 3, but it’s in this area that Dreamworks currently dominates over PIXAR.
Also, feel free to needlessly bash Shrek 4 here. I only said ‘not intended’.
To be honest, I really enjoyed Shrek 1&2. However, I thought the third was pretty lousy in comparison to those two. I think that if there’s one area Shrek trumps Toy story, it’s the appeal to adults. There are more adult jokes for the parents in the Shrek films. The thing is, my 3yr old son will watch TS1&2 but has not managed to watch Shrek all the way through. I will take my family to see TS3 but will wait for Shrek to hit the dvd. That doesn’t mean that everyone will be like me. My money is on TS3 for the win but by a tiny margin.
Yeah, I agree. Personally, I really do enjoy watching Dreamworks films (they’re sort of my comedic guilty pleasure away from the high end, emotional quality of PIXAR). But I believe that Woody and Buzz are just so classic characters that they deserve the #1 highest grossing movie spot this year.
Anyway, this might be a pretty close call, international gross wise. IIRC, the Shrek films do very, very well overseas for the most part, however, TS has much, much more hype surrounding it, not to mention that sack of fail called Artie did damage S3 for everyone. I’m not even sure that good overseas dubbing saved S3.
But, I am 97% certain that TS3 will dominate US and (maybe) Canadian.
If this poll was on film quality there would be no doubt as to which is better, but when it comes to grosses I know that DreamWorks films have their ways now and then. However, I’m all for Toy Story 3.
Toy Story 3 will definitely do better. It has a much larger audience; kids will want to see it, teens and young adults will want to see it, and many adults will want to see it and others will be forced take their kids anyway. Shrek, on the other hand, is pretty much a joke. Maybe some kids will want to see it, but I was grossed out by Shrek’s antics when I was 8. Teens and young adults, forget it. Some adults may want to see it but I think many will avoid it after the stinkbomb Shrek 3. However, the 3D and IMAX will probably pull in quite a few people. Even so, Toy Story 3 has all that and more, and I personally think it’ll be one of the biggest box office hits ever.
Im sure Toy Story 3 will do better. it has a much bigger fanbase and more people are emotionally attatched to the films. I realyl liked the first 2 shrek films but as other have said, the third wasb ad and apparently this one is too.
Ok, I do admit that Dreamworks does have their occasional Cream of the Crop on RT, and while Kung Fu Panda was a better film than the rest of their slew, I agree with what Jack Black said in the 81st Academy Awards.
" Each year I do one DreamWorks project, then I take all the money to the Oscars and bet it on Pixar."
And you know that once Dreamworks makes one decently good film, their going to instantly milk it for all its worth.
Toy Story 100% fresh
Toy Story 2 100% fresh
Toy Story 3 - probably like 97-99% fresh
Shrek Forever After might make like a couple of million dollars on its opening day, just so the parents who liked the first movie can see it, and then Toy Story 3 will dominate the rest of the box-office competition between the two.
personally i liked shrek 1 and 2, but 3 just upset me, and pretty sure with all the hype toy story 3 is getting, it well surely do better in quality and money wise against shrek 4.
lol “Cash Cow” i decided to visit the shrek site to view some vids, but i felt like i was cheating on toy story 3, so i left it, also i looked around abit sherk 4 has gotten some negative reviews
