I do think Shrek Forever After will do very well money-wise, despite what is likely to be a questionable quality, especially in comparison to Toy Story 3. I voted that Toy Story 3 would make more money, but only just, and I think this because of the hype of it as well as the nostalgia factor meaning that there’s gonna be quite a wide range in the audience for it.
I did enjoy the first two films, but didn’t like the third one. But Shrek 4 won’t flop, kids will eat anything they put in front of them - see Alvin and the Chipmunks.
It’ll do okay at the box office. But Toy Story 3 will more than likely surpass it in the box office.
The Toy Story films have had universal acclaim, and success at the box office. Back then in the late 90’s, success at the box office was maybe a little less or more than $100 million. These days, success means OVER at least $800 million dollars.
Shrek 4 may get 300 or 400 million, but Toy Story 3 will probably win. Until Harry Potter 7 part I comes out, becoming the Avatar of this year, mindwiping all movies from the summer. Harry Potter will be the TRUE competition to Toy Story 3.
Strictly IMO, but the advantage TS3 has is the breadth and depth of its potential audience. Sure it will be a huge family hit, and it should draw in a majority of young adults who saw the first 2 as kids. (And all of us animation fans and Pixar fans who saw the first 2 as adults.) But I get the feeling there’s a big adult audience that didn’t see TS or TS2 in theatres, because, at the time, they thought, “Eh, it’s animation, that’s for kids.” I think in more recent years, more and more mature filmgoers, convinced by reviews/word of mouth/subject matter, went to the theatre to see Ratatouille, or Wall-E, or Up, and now know that Pixar = good quality films for anyone. If TS3 continues that streak of glowing, “best of the year!” reviews, especially reviews that emphasize the emotional content, a bunch of those adults - who would never even think about going to a “kiddie movie” - are going to see TS3.
Although I’m sure Shrek 4 will make plenty of $, I don’t expect it to get the sort of reviews and word of mouth that TS3 will. The original Shrek was a pop culture phenomenon because adults responded to the irreverent, “let’s make fun of Disney and fairy tales” attitude, but that’s kind of old-hat now.
Shrek wasn’t that bad, but I’m not sure the sequels did as good (onyl saw the second, and that was O.K.). In both cases, it appears that this is the final movie in the series as well. Then again, after 11 years, the original fans of Toy Story (who are probably mainly adults now) and the newcomers will swarm the theaters. I know I’ll be one of them!
I think the reason why Toy Story 3 will make more money is, like many of you have said, there’s an underlying emotional level to the film that Shrek doesn’t have. I mean, Shrek 4 will probably be a hilariously funny film for kids who are interested in seeing what happens to the Ogre, but that’s about it. There’s no emotional reason to see this film, no reason why adults themselves might go see it.
Toy Story was our childhood. I was 4 years old when the film came out and remember fondly that my Woody doll was my best friend growing up. I’m older now, of course, and being roughly Andy’s age now at 19, I too have grown out of a lot of my old toys. And having Andy grow up with us, PIXAR is really pushing that emotional reality on us. By making Toy Story 3, it not just marks the end of the Toy Story series, but also really represents the end of our childhood for anyone who grew up with Toy Story. That’s why Toy Story 3 will be the more popular film.
If you think about it to me I think that TS3 will bring in more audiance
Because TS3 is the seguil to TS2 and that was around 1998 or something maybe 2000
TS3 should bring in more older audiance like peole in their 40s
But to me with shrek, Dreamworks are running out of ideas
Later soon their going to bring Madagascar3 and Kung Fu Pand 2.
The only movie their going to bring ( as a new movie ) is
Megamind
I grew up with Toy Story I was born the year after they drew Toy Story. I think it will collect more or less the same
IDK if this belongs here, but it looks like Decipicable Me is trying to compete with Toy Story 3. I saw a Decipicable Me advertisement on Facebook that said “Can’t Toy With This Story”
ON TOPIC:
I voted TS3 as…
Young Adults opinion
Shrek<Toy Story
Young adults grew up with Toy Story, so I bet they want to see it more.
My hopes is for Toy Story 3 to do great and personally do better than Shrek. It would break my heart if Toy Story actually lost to a movie that had more sequels than it needed. But if Toy Story 3 wins, HAIL PIXAR!!!
Im sure Shrek 4 will do well in the money but Toy Story 3 will top it off. We have been waiting 11 years for it so people are more atemted to it.
You’re right, besides Toy Story has touched are hearts much more than Shrek ever could and i expect great things from this installment.
That’s just sad, Lotso. I was kind of planning on maybe seeing that film (and I still might if the reviews are good) but it’s really pathetic if they have to degrade other films just to sell themselves. When Harry Potter came out, PIXAR didn’t lambaste it but instead a humorous homage with Mike and Sulley .
Hydrova, Ditto.

That’s real low… I think Despicable Me must be going through some identity crisis to resort to such cheap potshots at the competition…
Cheap shot? it was a reference, it doesn’t say a thing about Toy Story, just praises theirs.
Found it on Facebook:
Now that I look at it, It’s actually harder to tell if it is really being insulting to Toy Story or if it is just a lame attempt at a joke. When I first read about about the ad, I thought it would be this huge commercialized thing making fun of the Toy Story and promoting Despicable Me, now that I look at it, it’s much more vague and subtle. It’s bothering me less now.
Oh, and here’s Shrek Forever After’s
as well as Toy Story 3’s
Even their bumper ad sounds much more interesting than either of the other films.
In one preview, Dreamworks took a little shot at Disney:
Shrek: Alright, what’s the catch?
Rumpelstiltskin: You gotta give a day to get a day.
“Give a day/Get a day” was the slogan for the volunteer program Disney sponsored earlier this year, where if you did a day of volunteer work, you’d get a free-day voucher to go to the theme parks.
So Dreamworks were mocking a volunteer programme? That doesn’t reflect very well on them if so.
Huh, that’s actually kinda clever and subtle.
Oh, and none of these even compare to the “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” ad campaigns in the early 90’s.
I’m sure that I will like Toy Story 3 better than Shrek, but I’m still excited for both
I think Toy Story 3 will be a good movie, I have wanted to see Woody, Buzz Light year, Jessi And Bullseye
