Toy Story Replicas (No trading-related posts please)

I have been thinking about doing a Dolly, but I won’t custom anything from TS3 until after I see the movie a couple of times. I want to get a better idea of scale and personality before I start anything…but Dolly will probably be my first pick.

It is like Totoro in the TSC thread, I have been eyeing them for awhile, but they come in about 40 different sizes, so I decided to hold out for the movie to make up my mind on exactly which one I was going to buy.

Only two more weeks!!!

And I have also been keeping an eye on baby dolls, but again I want to make sure I get a good grasp of scale, and I have yet to find one with a head sculpt that would be even mildly passable. But Big Baby is in the plans too.

This guide will be helpful on Big Baby:

My Grandmother owns hundreds of dolls, baby dolls, barbie etc. So I’m going to find a suitable match next time I’m in IL.

I don’t think customizing Dolly at the moment is a good idea. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of the Toy Story 3 line that Chunk, Twitch and Sparks belong to.

Disney/Pixar don’t seem to have a problem making soft toys of practically any character. I’m assuming this is because they are cheaper and easier to make than plastic characters. That is why I believe characters like Dolly, Buttercup, Peas-In-A-Pod and Mr. Pricklepants are definitely on the Thinkway table.

I don’t have much hope for Big Baby. He straight up wouldn’t appeal to boys and his appearance in the movie would rule out girls too. The only way I could see it working is if they packaged him in his ‘original clothes’ - basically what he would look like new. Even then probably not. Only completists and collectors would buy him and that isn’t a huge market. That being said Mattel did make a figure of him so who knows?

Don’t they usually announce new toys at the San Diego Comic-con? I’d say wait until then before customizing TS3 characters because we’re bound to get a whole slew of them soon. I myself am really hoping we get an accurately scaled Stretch. I’ve never seen a toy with that kind of material made so big. It looks like it would have been a lot of fun to have as a kid (and even as an adult).

My concern with Dolly is that she is the only one of the 14 new characters shown in the individual character posters that did not get a Buddy Pack toy. It makes me think her role in the film might be pretty small, and off of Thinkway’s radar.

I’m planning on making my own Dolly, regardless if Thinkway Toys decides against picking up the character. Her design is simple enough for a DIY creation, and I am pretty good on a sewing machine.

True but her voice actor makes me feel as though her role won’t be so small that it doesn’t warrant a toy being made. It doesn’t make sense to me that Pixar would design characters with detailed bios and then not release the toy. There was so much hype with characters being revealed gradually each week. Part of me believes that although it was mostly to promote the movie it was also to promote the characters themselves and their eventual toy releases. I could definitely see Dolly being popular amongst girls.

Even John Lasseter talks about how he wants children to make the characters their own through the toys. He probably always has the toy releases for the new characters in the back of his mind. After all, he does have final say on the TS Thinkway toys - they didn’t want to release Jessie after TS2 because they thought she wouldn’t be popular and after he urged them to she turned out to be a hit.

I’d love to see all of your guys’ Dolly customs though and I know they’ll look great. IF Thinkway releases one we probably wouldn’t even see it until late this year anyway.

For those of you considering a dolly These pics may help. They do not show scale but I’m sure that can be figured out easy enough.

I will make a version myself at some point. Working on other things at the moment though.

AWESOME! Where did you get that? Thats basically a how to kit! Thank you so much man, that will save me a ton of trouble. That can be printed as is (the body part) so this is awesome. Very, very cool!

Oh yeah that’s from the Art of Toy Story 3, right? That’s cool! I haven’t opened my copy yet, to avoid spoiling the film for myself, but I can already tell this will be an exciting read.

It is from the art of. Do not open that book unless your not worried about spoilers. It’s a great book though, lots of reference material.

Yeah, I assumed as much reading the Art of Toy Story 3 topic. I’ll be bringing my copy with me to the theaters when I see Toy Story 3 in theaters.

Took a trip to my local tru. Massive display with lots of new items but no new tsc figures yet. Again i was drawn to the Mattel Jessie doll. Re-packaged for ts3 she was £35. I went to the back of the store and found the same doll in the older box for £30. Crazy. I took some pics for you to check out.

Size comparison with Thinkway Woody. She is very slim.

Mattel’s answer to the ‘bald’ problem on the hairline. A simple paint job.

Rear view showing how slim she is. The belt is a clip job that will not stay closed

Her hat is a soft rubber type. That face is fantastic.

There are problems with the details on her clothes. The tsc wins easy. I’m 99% sure the voice is Cusack. Mix this one with the tsc version and you have the perfect Jessie.

Another head shot. I think this sculpt is better than the tsc version

So I guess Mattel’s Jessie is close in size to Woody then. I’ve seen her in the stores now and it looked like she would be too small, so I wasn’t sure.

The top of Jessie’s head should be the same height as the bottom of Woodys eye’s, if that makes any sense. She seems to be pretty spot on size wise. Like I said, there are issues with this one but I think she is worth getting. I will mod her a bit of course. The chaps need fixing as their a poor effort really. They need some black leatherette edging. The hat I will exchange for the tsc version. The shirt I can live with. I will display this one over the tsc when I get it. The head sculpt wins for me everytime. Now if I could put this head on the tsc body…

I guess I’ll get the Mattel Jessie instead, then…is she cheaper???

I don’t think this version is available outside Europe yet. I could be wrong though.

Aw, that’s sad :frowning: I thought I saw her at Wal-Mart, though…

Is it like this at all??

That’s the non tsc Thinkway version.

Oh, okay. Thanks!!!
