We dont see the whole string in the shot just before Bonnie pulls him down from the tree?
Oh, I think I remember now, by the time we see it Woody has already recoiled back upwards quite a bit. also the fact that he was mere inches from the ground suggests it’s far longer than we’ve seen before. again, Im just going off memory.
this could easily be something that has no definite answer, being CG there might not be any real limitation for how long the animators want the string to get. Wouldnt surprise me if the length changes from shot to shot.
Like I said, this is immediatly before he jerks back, (he is actually starting to, this is where the string is streightest) it looks as if this is as far as it’ll go, so it prevents him from walking forward.
Again, you can’t see Woody’s back and the ring at the same time, but the tree isn’t that short. They may have done what they did when they made Slink go limp in the Catipilar room, to make him really close to the ground for comedic effect.
It almost seems like his string gets longer in each movie, so I figured it was wroth a shot posting pics from all 3. My best guess is to look at the pics a bit, then decide what you think is most plausible/looks the best. Pull out the string, and just mess with the length until you find the length you are happy with. Hope this helps!
EDIT: You pretty much hit the nail on the head, Kyle. And when it shows Bonnie walking up to the tree, it’s already shown him pulling back up a bit, and you still don’t see the ring. Just the string coming out from the branches. I still stick by my suggestion, just check out the pics and figure up how long you’d like it. My guess would be around 7 to 9+ inches, but it’s up to you.
Because the length is often greatly exaggerated, I have settled on just short of 8 and half inches.
Pics coming soon.
rewinding back a sec, I just had a huge scare. while adjusting the ring, my temporary knot came undone. tsssssseeeewwp!!! the hold slurped up the string!
no… no no! nawwww nooo!! I stood there in shock for a a good 10 seconds, I could see the very end of the string peeking through the hole, I couldn’t reach it with my fingers for sure. I tried tweezers, too thick. I ended up fashioning two chop stick esk grabbing things out of two bobby pins after using pliers to make the ends as skinny as possible, and was able to grab the end of the string and pull it back out without doing any evasive surgery. Im pretty sure the only reason I was able to get the end back out was due to the lack of tension you get when the string is as long as I had it. thankfully no harm done.
Wampar ,
about 20 pages back we got to see cool pictures of your Troikas .
Now , I’m gonna attempt to paint my eggs too .
Would you mind posting instructions on how to paint them , like in a step to step basis , what did you do to achieve near likeness to the movie ?
And I know that the book Toy Story A Essential Guide have references for the troikas , ironically I had that book when I was young , but threw it away .
Is it okay if you post reference materials for the troikas ?
I want to get the Mattel foreign released Electronic Woody because he says 1) Someone’s poisoned the water hole and 2) because his head is soft vinyl that can be squished- hence I can cut out his molded teeth and glue his lips together- in theory. I just have to get him first. -Omar
Nice job! He looks great, and i’m glad you avoided surgery. Looks really cool how the string is so long. That’s why I put a clip on the string when I swapped my ring out. I would have freaked out too.
Plus, It’s really neat how you’ve got Woody on a bed there. At least it looks like a bed. Kind of fitting.
Also, anyone have any clue why the foreign Woody says the “Waterhole” phrase, but the Noth America release doesn’t? Sounds like over reacting like “Safety issues, because it tells kids to contaiminate water supplies” or something. I’d be interesting to see if his mouth could be closed though, my fear is that it would wind up making his jaw look too long.
I wasn’t expecting him to be, but Mr. Spell was the single most frustrating thing I have attempted to date. I expected him to be easy…that was foolish of me…but regardless, he is done, and looks okay…not the best ever, but passable.
I also cut the gun out of the hand of a GAM and painted the cross on his helmet to make myself a medic.
Only one toy left, and I will have what is to me a complete set of Andy’s Toys: Robot. However, I am going to take a break for a couple of weeks first. Other stuff to take care of in the real world.
That mr spell looks so good Wampar. What did you use as a main body body for him? that print out looks very effective. What made him so hard to make ? He looks great.
That Mr Spell look’s great .
As was asked before , Wampar , I’m attempting to paint my own troikas now ,
I have the set of unpainted eggs , but I don’t really know how to start off .
Mind giving me , and probably future readers , a detailed step by step tutorial on what did you do , what base color did you apply , and proper guidelines .
I used to have the essential toy story guide , but either me or my mum threw it away . Would it be okay if you post reference materials too ?
So yeah , I know this would be kinda troublesome for you . But your help would be greatly appreciated by me and other fellow other readers who would attempt on the troikas sooner or later .
Thanks alot !
The main body I made using plaster, which is a material I have never worked with before. My ignorance of how to properly use the materials is what made it difficult for me. A lot of trial, error, and frustration went into it. Not to mention making something that is so geometric and so symmetrical was a pain. I had decided that I was only going to photograph him at an angle so the imperfections didn’t show as easily…but alas, the one picture I posted here is straight forward.
He is slowly starting to grow on me. I have been drawing and painting for about 25 years now. But sculpting is very new to me. And I am my own worst critic. But he is starting to grow on me already, and by the end of the week I will be thrilled with him.
Howdy. I haven’t really talked much about my past on here, but I was a commercial art major in college, (granted I gave up drawing and painting as a career path about a decade ago, but I have been doing it most of my life.) so I have been drawing and painting since I was ten years old. The reason I mention it is that the only thing I can tell you I did was drew the faces very lightly with a pencil, and then mixed the paint colors using the craft paints I have ammassed over the years, and filled in the shapes. I wish I could offer better tutorial advice, but draw it…then paint it…is all I got. Basically, play with the colors and have fun with it.
I will post a scan from the Essential Guide for you tonight after I am done at work.
Anyone with the slightest artistic ability always put pressure on themselves. I always thought that when someone comments ‘that’s good’ they really mean ‘it’s crap’. It’s comes with the territory.
Have you thought about using air drying clay for larger pieces? It’s easy to work with and fairly cheap. I use polymer clay for most of my sculpting but it’s heavy and expensive. On the plus side it comes in loads of colours. You can even create different shades by mixing colours.
Keep up the good work and keep posting the pics.
Those wanting to paint troika’s, Wampar does the same old technique as me. It’s all about taking your time
I thought that this would be off-topic but surprisingly I come on to find people discussing almost the very topic of my question: Could someone please re-post the ordering information for the nesting eggs and squeaky sharks? I can’t find it anywhere. And by the way I love that Mr. Spell.
Im going to buy a baby doll that looks close to big baby and let my 3 year old niece play with it for a few weeks and hopefully it comes back looking like big baby
Wampar ,
aite , shall wait for your scan . Thanks alot for taking the time to help me !
I shall prepare the necessary items for painting . Do you guys think I should apply oil-lacquer after painting ? To give the eggs that nice smooth touch and look .
Just this week I finally sprayed a Clear Satin gloss to mine. I wanted them to give a tiny bit of shine as to not appear wooden, but I didn’t want them to shine too much for fear that they might look like Porcelain. The tiny bit of shine from the Satin spray worked perfectly for me. I applied the same to my sheep and Mr. Spell.
And i did not forget about posting the Troika picture…I apologize greatly, it will get posted a little later today.
