Glad to see they’re keeping the spirit alive. Since it’s a feature film short, I’m guessing it’ll fit in with the timeline. I’m personally hoping it will explain what happened to some characters after Toy Story 3 that didn’t make it into the movie. But I’d still be satisfied with some goofball Toy Story Treat humor.
Now if only he could sign onto his Formspring for once…
Im not sure how much I like this idea…the purpose of pixar shorts, the theatrical ones, are to be experimental, usually to overcome some kind of technical hurdle. they cant do too much of that when using existing merterial like this. as much as I love the toy story franchise, and I’ll always love seeing them on the big screen, this just sounds like something more suited for, say the toy story 3 blu ray. especially if it compliments the story at all like the Jack Jack short.
I thought the same thing too, until it looked like their sort of platued for a moment on what can be done with 3d.
Day and Night was a cool concept, I got it, but at least I know there will be a toy story short the next time around.
Its hard to top Presto in my opinion. Thats my favorite short to date. I wish it were a full length film.
Not sure what you mean by claiming they have plateaued, have they not made advancements with each short? If they have, even when when its in subtle ways, its a success. Presto is my fav too of their recent efforts. I really didn’t care for partly cloudy but they have gotten back to taking on new grounds with Night and Day. I’d like to see them continue that. a toy story short makes it sound like they have ran out of ideas. which I know isn’t the case, they have tons of concepts they can look to and flesh out. and I’d like to see them tackle more ways of mixing 2d and 3d techniques, be it literally (Night and day) or in spirit (presto).
I am a little disappointed. I think I’ve said this before (deja vu?), but with the sequel movies and Pixar Canada, I am beginning to wonder if Pixar is going to come up with anything truly original in the future… Brave is its best bet, but even that is a fairy-tale princess movie…
If you’re dissappointed, there’s always cable tv or other films. Take them for what they’ve done, rather than what you expect new of them. Otherwise in that light, everything will be bad since its not catered to your specific pleasures.
Uh… isn’t that the point of opinions? That people would have different expectations and satisfaction levels? And really, nothing can ever be “catered to my specific pleasures”, but I don’t find “everything bad”.
That’s because I compromise on certain things (like cheesy action movies) but won’t change my opinion on others (like more Pixar sequels). A different person might like more Pixar sequels and hate cheesy action movies. I might want more Wall-E shorts, while another guy might want more original content.
That’s the beauty and frustrations of opinions.
Hmm, well, I’m fifty-fifty on this. On the one hand, I love Toy Story and its characters, and I’m never gonna complain about seeing more of them. On the other hand, like thedriveintheatre, I just want to see more original stuff from Pixar because I love their original stuff. The Cars Toons were a good example of what Pixar could do as a spin-off from a feature film, and they weren’t at all bad or anything like that, but they certainly didn’t reach the heights of many of their individual shorts such as Presto, One Man Band, etc.
If Pixar were willing to pair an original short with a Toy Story short before Cars 2, then I’d be even happier. But that’s just wishful thinking.
The one good thing to come from this will probably be that this short will be the first short from the Canada based Pixar studio, (Im assume). so we’ll get see how talented they are when given full control over these beloved characters, and eventually feature films. sure, they’ll mostly do smaller non theatrical things, but this will push them to be at their best from the start. a theatrical short puts more pressure on them to be great than a dvd extra or tv special would.
I extremely glad and giddy over them doing this once. But honestly, I’d also like to see some more original things from Pixar. I don’t want them to turn into franchise central, they’re wayyy better than that!
Wasn’t there some project they were working on about a boy and dinosaurs? I may be wrong, but I remember hearing about this somewhere…
I’m torn on this…I agree with lizardgirl though…if they pair a TS short AND a fresh, original short film, I’ll be happy as a clam. I always loved the originality of their short films…
Day & Night was graphically pleasing, but the whole “Radio” part didn’t really do anything for me. Sadly it’s dropped to my “Least favorite” status. I did enjoy it though. The idea was brilliant
And the dinosaur story sounds vaguely familiar but I’m not 100% certain if it was accurate or just a rumor. Someone here should know though. I’m just bummed that Newt was “shelved”
The dinosaur thing isnt a theatrical short, but a Discovery Channel special.
when i heard this, i was kinda disappointed. i like the original shorts… though i’m sure that it’ll turn out okay… i enjoy seeing their newer, more original ideas and such.
I love this idea. Im a huge toy story fan and am interested to see what the toys have been up to since 3 ended. I do love new stuff, but I cant pass up toy story.
I 'm pretty excited for this, though I do agree that pairing this with an original would make it an even better experience. My only major fear is that I wonder if they’ll be able to get the cast back, as they didn’t with the Toy Story Treats. Then again, those were commercial break bumpers, so I doubt that they’ll have the same problem since this is theatrical.
Yes, being theatrical should be a huge advantage, they’ll most likely go the extra mile with voice actors getting anyone they need back.
I’m excited for the Toy Story short. I think that since they are putting it before Cars 2, they can get away with it not being an original concept short.
I just assumed that they already had the short planned out and recorded the cast dialogue during production of TS3. If they didn’t then they can always have the actors record their voices over the phone or try to work around the actor’s schedules if they want to do it in person.
No matter how, I hope they do round up the original cast in some way. It’ll be interesting to have short that’s not “speechless” (or set to music) even though it’s not original.
Well actually, let me correct myself. First of all, I’m just assuming that it won’t be, and second, it’s not like it was impossible or forbidden, it’s just new. And, even though were losing that quality we got from the beautifully done stories without words we’re seeing some old friends again.
