It was about Bolt (no surprises this far) and the movie’s character, and the author wrote that out of the three main characters the dog was “terrible” but that the cat and hamster were hilarious.
Now, this was just a poorly written user review on Metacritic, and I wouldn’t have thought so much of it if it wasn’t that I’ve seen countless reviews and even some interviews praising Mittens and Rhino whereas Bolt is often cited as bland, boring or too complex.
So is poor Bolt really such an uninteresting character?
I really don’t think so personally. But I think that the movie failed to give him enough attention to really squeeze potential out of his character development, instead giving too much screen time and witty dialogs to other simplistic comic relief characters like Rhino and the funny-talking pigeons. It’s almost as if the movie itself forgets about its main character, who is consequently pushed to the background and get’s relatively few dialogs. But the scenes in which Bolt, and his warm canine nature and amazing expressiveness, was allowed to shine are also the by far most touching in my opinion. Like the puppy scene in the beginning or the scene in which Bolt cuddles up to Penny inside the burning building, choosing to share her fate even though he could escape and save himself. sob
Do you know of any underrated animated characters? Characters whose movie was never that appreciated or were overshadowed by other characters in the same film?
I’ll go with Hilda, from Horus: Prince of the Sun (aka The Little Norse Prince). At the time this movie was released in the 1960’s, I’d say she was one of the most complex female animated characters in existence. She’s given the impossible choice of eternal life at the price of killing her friends, or being mortal like the rest. The emotions she goes through are perfectly believable and human, and she played an active role in the story.
King K. Rool, anyone? In the Donkey Kong Country TV show, he and his cronies are practically the only thing that’s keeping me from clicking something else on YouTube. Everything he says is so quotable! Yet nobody I speak to seems to appreciate the humour he adds to the show. Without him it’d be boring as all heck!
“Hey DK! What you wanna do today?”
“Hey Diddy! I know… EAT BANANAS!”
“Yay!!!1”
All of this and similar banter. Fifteen minutes long. Every time. Wouldn’t that grate your nerves as well?
King K. Rool for president.
(Yes, there’s actually a blue parrot in the show… his name’s Polly Roger.)
(And no, he didn’t actually say that in the show.)
(Nor did K. Rool.)
I love King K. Rool! Villains had the best humor in 90’s video game cartoons, for sure. He and King Koopa (from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show) had lots of quotable moments.
Chuckles: I totally agree on Vinny!! Personally, I’d say, like, every single character on Atlantis. They’re all amazing, and that movie is so over looked.
