Pixar is lucky this time around. Last summer, KFP was released 3 weeks before Wall-E, and then Batman came around just 3 weeks later. It’s been a while since MonstersVsAliens, and the movies released lately have been either crap or just don’t threaten the family-oriented market. So Up is the 2nd biggest film of the year so far behind StarTrek, which I find to be a more interesting film to watch, just not as original. Too bad that such a tiny number of people bothered to see the well advertised Soloist, a crowd-worthy film.
Next weekend’s release, Year One, will fight with Hangover and the new Sandra Bullock / Ryan Reynolds romantic film. It’s likely then that Up will finally push past Hangover, and be the #3 film by next Monday’s report. The higher two films are likely to roll in $40+M worth of hay. Up will continue it’s excellent run until Ice Age3 debuts, a film that has generated great interest on this website, on July 4th (U.S.A. holiday). That film has had huge advertising and the Scrat preview is a masterpiece as usual…
Time for the weekly “Woohoo!” Estimated “Up” box office for this weekend = $21.3 million. Sitting at #3 behind “The Proposal” and (still) “The Hangover.” The domestic total for “Up” is now at $224.1 - reports say this means “Up” has now passed “Wall-E,” and (someone correct me if I’m wrong), it sounds like “Up” is now #3 in Pixar US box office, with only “Incredibles” and “Finding Nemo” still outranking it. Now, I’ve never met a Pixar film I didn’t like, but for whatever reason, “Up” has really captured my heart, and I’m happy to see it doing so well.
If this weekend’s estimates are correct, then Up now has the 2nd-highest B.O. gross of 2009 so far, behind Star Trek and (oh thank god!) ahead of the #3, Monsters vs. Aliens.
It’s had the 2nd highest for quite some time now. The question of the hour is:
“Will Up pass up Star Trek next week to become, at least temporarily, the biggest film of 2009?”
Up is only $14M behind ($226 vs $240M), and it beat StarTrek by $16M in just 3 days of this past weekend. So, almost certainly, Up will push past the franchise remake. Then, Transformers and Potter will probably shoot into the top spot. Ice Age3 previews had 90% attendance, but not sure of its critical reviews yet. ( Note: I was wrong about Jack Black’s movie beating Up and getting $40M, it was in 4th place and will probably get $30M for the full week.)
So where will it end? If you look at Wall-E, that film made $40-60M beyond the 3rd and 4th weekend. Up could either steadily decline or precipitously fall in the face of the Big Three movies. I’m guessing it will do +$52-75M more business → $278-301M total.
Well, since I’ve spent about $115 (wow, that’s a big number now that I think about it) on tickets so far, I really hope I’ve helped Pixar out! I’m glad they’re leading the pack, Star Trek already had such a huge fanbase before it came out, and it’s actually a really great movie, so I’m not surprised that it’s in first, but I hope Up passes it at some point. It’s also been in theaters for almost 7 weeks, and Up’s only on it’s 4th, so if theaters keep it, it just might.
chef do they really? wow! If that’s the case, I’m shooting for at least 30! Just got back from 13 not too long ago. Cried the most and loved it the most this time, not sure why, but I did. Actually, [spoil]I cried at the campfire scene and the badge scene this time, I’ve never cried at the campfire scene, and only 2 times at the badge scene.[/spoil]
And ff stands for Final Fantasy, I’m a big fan of the series, and it’s been my general name for sites for years now. I guess it could also mean foo fighters, my fave band, but that’s coincidence, as well as the 1906, that’s actually kinda funny. That’s a personal number, I just grabbed one that would randomize my name for big sites when I made my name a long time ago. Now that I think about it, I think I should have used my newer name, lvl27 Cubone, whatever!
same here regarding my grandfathers. The part where[spoil]Carl’s looking through the adventure book at the end KIIIIIIILLS me every time. It’s the most emotional part of the whole movie imo. Really intense. I cried more at the “cross your heart” part of the campfire scene.[/spoil]
That’s pretty cool though, I’ve never really had a good father figure growing up so [spoil]the relationship between Carl and Russell hits me pretty hard. The ice cream scene is really awesome at the end.[/spoil]
It’s kinda amazing that I get different feelings from the same parts different times I watch it though.
btw, as i watched Up via laptop, i wanna ask you something, the scene while Carl open the ‘My Adventure Book’ after he realized that Ellie had filled the whole book, there’s been a writing of Ellie [which in Russian at my laptop. lol]. it was ‘Thanks for the adventure, now go have on your own.’ right?
Nope, it was The Hangover. It looked like it was Up when the weekend estimates came in, but once the actuals were released, Hangover snatched the #1 spot by a slim margin.
