UP Box Office

all i can say is relax~ Up haven’t released worldwide yet, i’m sure they’ll be #1 movie this year. so optimistic

Yeah, it probably will, it did great at Cannes, and it got excellent reviews. I’d forgotten about foreign releases.

yeah. if i’m not mistaken, it was the first animated movie to open Cannes right?

Yeah, and first 3d film as well.

So, are the estimates for U.S. only, or global?

in the US.

No, sadly Harry Potter movies do enormously well worldwide, especially here and in any country remotely European, even the 3rd movie which was bland. The book base is just too big… it will be the biggest selling book franchise in history, and movie franchise too. If Up manages $700M worldwide, Potter will do $850M. Transformers also does well too, especially in East Asia. It sold a huge number of dvd’s. There is some sort of Transformers anime over there, I think, and there are tons of these dvd’s available in this country too. Star Trek didn’t excite the young couple crowd much, or women, or families and there is pent up demand by these groups. Expect ‘the Big Three’ releases to clean up at the box office and leave poor Mr. Fredricksen out of the limelight.

But it’s great to see how Pixar will be able to fund ever better future projects with their vast reapings.

Edit 10 min later: Potter’s films have done from $800M to almost $$1B worldwide, with close to $300M nearly every time here in the U.S. So it’s possible Up can beat it domestically, but unless the movie really is bland, as in sucks, it cannot surpass it overall. Transformers did over $300M here and 2nd place was in South Korea, then China, England, and Japan. They are intensely loyal in Asia, but if the movie falls short of our critical eye, Up could surpass it here. Having not seen anything but Scrat from IA3, one cannot say for sure… But Rottentomatoes says RotF is bland, going down to 38% acceptance with their critics. The first one got 57%, so that’s an indication of an adrenaline fix, and not much innovation over the 2007 picture, which they called “exhilarating”.

Wow, that was a pretty sour note. I didn’t realize that Harry Potter was so widespread. The latest books aren’t really kid friendly, they get pretty dark, so I imagine that the younger audience would be small-er, but still pretty big. I knew that RotF would do well, but again, I didn’t know about overseas. We’ll see how it does, coming out earlier, Up has a slight advantage, but probably not one big enough to tilt the scale.

Yeah. I suddenly taken aback of DarkHandOfSigourneyWeaver’s post which is hate to say, correct. in my country, there’s not much Pixar fan base. they’re just watch it as animation/cartoon entertainment neglecting the real deal behind each movie. Surprisingly, Dreamworks animation quite a big bang here!

Yes, I’ve to admit, people just neglect the adventures and the sadness of Grandpa Carl to choose the life that full of action stuff.

Just hoping that Grandpa Carl Fredricksen & Co. will strive their best to do well in the box office this year eventually. If it’ll not in Top 3, I just hope that it’ll made it in Top 10.

wannabechef91 writing in anguish and absolute sadness.
Don’t worry Grandpa Carl, I’ll always with you… :frowning:

Hehe, I dig how you call him Grandpa Carl, that’s pretty cool.

Really? Dreamworks beats out Pixar in Europe? Wow, I though they had higher standards over there for cinema and art. Dreamworks churns out a few good films from time to time, but they’re almost always submerged in cliches and stereotypical, predictable plots.

Ice Age 4 for instance, looks surprisingly VULGAR. There’s the yak joke at the end of the theatrical trailer, and the joke regarding something’s tail, with phallic references in both. It’s a bit cheap and trashy imo, and the characters are too thin. To me, Dreamworks is in it for numbers, and Pixar’s in it for the art and expression. Not saying that the employees are all shallow at Dreamworks, but Pixar puts so much into everything they do, they are PICKY, and it pays off tremendously. Dreamworks has more slapstick and crude humor, and it makes a lesser movie.

Anyway, I’m really surprised that Europeans don’t generally favor Pixar, that’s a real shame.

Yeah. It’s true. For instance: Up. Up was released in France before any country did including the US. But it didn’t turn out well. The movie just fair for Europeans.

Like Flare said it’s moviepocalypse these days.

Everyone prefers action movie, over-hyped movie, publicity stunts made for a movie…etc…and all that.

The real expression of art has become endangered and Pixar, I can say is an endangered species, metaphorically.

The real deal behind movie-making:

Money, money and more money.

wannabechef91, Grandpa Carl, I know that you’re hoping for Ellie right now, don’t worry, i’ll always beside you. :frowning:

Have to disagree with some things here. First of all, IceAge3 is a Blue Sky Studios film, not Dreamworks. I’m not about to judge that movie by its trailers. Chris Wedge seems to be a friend to Disney and Co., and what I saw in the trailer concerning Scrat was the highest quality, which unfortunately doesn’t describe the meat of the movie, which involves the old cast, some new members and well, dinosaurs in some sort of Age. That movie was previewed in its entirety in 300 theaters this past weekend. Anyone hear about that?

Up in France. It’s not supposed to be released there till late July (so I don’t know what all this talk is about it not doing well there or Pixar not appreciated much in Europe). Later in Germany and England in the fall, which is disturbing. Ratatouille did superbly in those countries, better than any Dreamworks animated films ever have. In fact, it did as well there as any of our animation films have in the past 20 years. It should have, it had a local theme.

Up in Venezuela. Bulletin: Early this morning the Venezuelan Minister of Culture, Hector Soto, held a press conference, at 6 am in front of his home, wearing pajamas and a robe with slippers:

“I am proud to announce that later today, the theatrical gross for the Pixar movie Up, which as you all know was made in or about our great country, will exceed $4,000,000 U.S. dollars and pass up the Wall-E movie from last summer . …And we hope that this is not the last we see of Pixar. Do not forget about us Pixar. Thank you.”

Well that’s some good news.

Some bad news, I’m not gonna get to help Pixar out tonight, cant make number 14 tonight. :frowning:

But great, I was just going by what others were saying. The venezuela thingy is pretty awesome, and I’m glad to hear ratatouille did well. We’ll see!

Up will pass by this franchise film by Saturday, June 27th. As you may have read, Transformers2 is doing nearly Batman scale at the box, and might have $150M by this weekend. Up is holding up well under the onslaught, probably because T2 isn’t exactly family fare, and is going to bring armies to the theaters. A good weekend will push Carl’s odyssey past $255M, well past earlier projections.

Not exaclty family fare? It has more humping scenes than The Reader for crying out loud. It’s God-awful.

this weekend, ‘up’ surely will move into 4th place on the all-time Pixar box office rankings…with Monsters, Inc. well within range of being passed within one more week’s time. this flick has amazing staying power in the age of over saturation–both in terms of the number of movies and number of screens.

I’ve been helping! I’m really glad it’s been in the theater for so long. It’s good for Pixar, and for me as well! My last trip, the projector had screwed up before, and the showings were a bit late as a result, but a line of 20 or so people formed, and I was like HEY! There’s still a lot of people coming for this on the 4th week! Got my hopes up.

What do you guys think the international gross will be? I don’t know if Singapore would earn a lot for reasons stated in the “What do your friends and family think?” thread.

Yes, it must be really embarrassing for the families that do come, with their teenage kids in tow, to have to sit there thru 3-4 simulated humpings and all the explicit hot chick comments. I don’t know how that movie even got a 38% rating at RottenTomatoes. Edit 5 min later: it fell, now at near pathetic 21%. It was far worse than the bland Indiana Jones4, and is only good for adrenaline junkies.

I saw Up for the 3rd time tonite, and treasured it’s ability to still be emotionally involving. The size of the theater was small, around 100-120, and sold out. RotF is taking up 4 big theaters there, while Up had 2 big ones and one mid-sized 3-D. Now Up has only 2 screens and it’s not enough!

btw: if you must see RotF (T2), buy an Up ticket and then go see the new one, I actually saw both movies tonite and couldn’t in good conscience feed the junkie machine 10 bucks.

Hehe, nice one DarkHand. Nice to know you still get as much feeling from it. I still cry during Up, still so moving, and get a load of this,…

My little contribution to the box office. This is just for the first 4 weeks. More to come! I might just get these framed when it leaves theaters.

Ugh, we don’t get to keep our glasses in Singapore. We have to return them before leaving the theater.
