UP Box Office

It’s optional here, I just keep em. 15 pairs is a lot of room on my dresser though.

“Up” is now number one of 2009 in USA with domestic gross of 250 million.

But we all know that TF2: ROTF will take this place next week.

bleck

I think I just threw up a little from seeing that opening weekend gross for T2,… People are so brainwashed over franchises, that’s really irritating.

I’d rather be the #2 or #3 grossing movie of the year and have a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes than the #1 movie with a 21%. (Then again, I don’t work in Hollywood.)

Wonder how bad the drop-off will be for TF2 next weekend.

I agree, but having the general public appreciate a movie that deserves it more would be just about as nice. Puts a bit of hope into the equation,

Though the weekend is still in estimates (final figures will be out tomorrow), if the estimates hold, Up has now broken $250 million.

Guess the Wall Street Journal people were wrong.

Well said karly05. Up has to do big business to keep the Pixar $175M cost-per-film bandwagon going. Dedicated fans poured into T2 this past week. Now the not-so-dedicated are on their way to the theaters next week or so and might just as well see Ice Age or HPotter. Of course, these two highly family oriented movies may kill off Up’s remaining business. You have to wonder how the multiplexes are going to keep multiple screens for each of the 5 big cash cows, and single screens for the minor films. Wolverine fell off very badly after a spectacular first week, can we pray the same will happen to T2?

Edit: some teenage kid just told me that T2 would be the lowest critically rated blockbuster EVER – making over $400M and having a 20% tm rating.

Passed the “Monsters, Inc.”

Too bad that “Ice Age 3” took away the 3D screenings…

yeah, that is too bad…I’m pretty sure it can still pass The Incredibles though.

Yeah, “The Incredibles” 261.5 and “Shrek” 267.7 are next goals.

Darn it, I wish Ice Age 3 had taken away more 3D screens! I really really wanted to go back, and I’ve got a 3-day weekend with no major plans, but the good theatres around me now have Up on only one screen each, and it’s 3D only! I’ve already whined enough about how I dislike 3D. I hope it runs long enough that they end up with it running in 2D again.

Of course, my withdrawal symptoms may be so bad by Sunday that I break down and give the 3D another chance. :unamused:

Up took another drop when Ice Age and Public Enemies came out, it shows up as a strong 7th on the charts, but still lost over 30% of its business from earlier in the week and even more from the week before (it did $2.5M a week ago per day). Still, it’s a national holiday here in the U.S. and all of the top 7 movies will be doing quite strongly. Up pulled in about $1.6M per day late in the week and should double or more than double that thru Sunday. It could have been a far worse drop, with another big animation feature out, except that the local newspapers are mostly reporting IA3 as a so-so flick.

At this same point in its run, Wall-E was making $800,000-$1M per weekday and added another $23M to its booty by November. It’s good to see that Up will be the 2nd biggest film for Pixar. Will it break $300M? It should come close, but not with the HPotter onslaught coming. And, oh, T2 will push past Up as of today, Friday, in the U.S. to claim #1 movie for 2009.

Curse that Michael Bay and his devious robo-humping mind control…

This just isn’t fair.

I’m gonna say it again: I’d rather have good respectable box office with glowing reviews and serious Oscar talk than Humongous Box Office and a spot reserved on a lot of critics’ “10 Worst” list for the year.

The best benefit of good box office for Pixar is that it lets them keep making more creative, artist-driven movies the way they want to. I’d love to see them get to $300 million, but I think Up has already made its mark as a huge success.

Not that we can’t still curse Michael Bay; I’m just sayin’ (Still want to see the drop off for TF2 this week.)

P.S. - Hey, I’m Shark Bait now! Shark Bait Ooo-hah-hah!

Hehe, yeah, I agree, I just think it’s unfortunate, and Pixar deserves more from the public. Ratings are great, as are awards, but I just think they lack the appreciation they deserve from the rest.

Up has been a great success, I agree. at least it held first for a long time, and is still pushing numbers. I get to knock up that total by 6 bucks again today, so I’m still doing my part!

Here we go: $6.6 million for the weekend, still #6 even with Ice Age 3 eating up screens and box office (IA3 tied Transformers for #1). Up’s total is now at $264 million, which makes it officially the 2nd highest grossing Pixar movie (still behind Nemo).

Oh, and Transformers dropped 61% from its opening weekend.

International Box office: as you all know, “Up” is being rolled out slowly, country-by-country in many cases, but for those of you wondering how it’s been doing, in the places outside of North America where it’s already been released, there was this from the Hollywood Reporter: it’s made $50mil outside North America so far (with it not playing in most major overseas territories yet).

From July 5th’s Hollywood Reporter:
Pixar/Disney’s “Up” pushed its foreign cume to $50.8 million, thanks to a $1.8 million weekend at 1,350 sites in 15 markets.

Again, unlike most movies (ie, Transformers, Ice Age 3, etc) Up is being rolled out slowly, so instead of getting its take all at once, it’ll keep adding little by little until the end of the year (Japan won’t get it until December).

Nemo was POPULAR, I’m glad to see that Carl and gang are right up there with them. I’m also surprised it beat out The Incredibles, that’s a big deal. Hopefully the overseas business will push it to the top of '09. Great job guys!

This is awesome! Couldn’t it still become number one, what with all the countries that haven’t seen it yet?

Weekend actuals are in. Up made $6,521,389.
