I kind of agree. Up made me want to get a Blu-Ray player even before I heard about this, but it’s still a bit of a hassle. It’d be nice to have a more substantial set of features for the DVD. Then again, everyone’s pushing for the new format, so I guess this is their way of nudging people in that direction. (Kinda how they forced digital only down our throats with the exclusion of a CD for the soundtrack, makes me SO UPSET!)
Well I guess it’s that time again… step right up and spin the Wheel O’ Extras, and see where it lands for this year’s Pixar normal DVD release. And this year’s result is… meh. File it under the “Two Steps forward, one step backward” catagory. After a terribly bare-bones 1-disc DVD release for Cars and Ratatouille, Disney did a great job with a deluxe 3-disc DVD release of Wall-E. Now they’ve once again taken a good number of the features away and put them on BluRay only, leaving very little difference between the 1- and 2-disc normal DVD versions (a few extras, but other than the commentary, not a lot of difference). Pretty disappointing.
As a sidenote, though I’m not a big fan of the BluRay format, note that there will be $99 BluRay players in the US this December (low-end models without the bells and whistles, but BluRay nonetheless). I don’t know how many articles I’ve read saying to expect $99 promotions for cheapie BluRay players this December.
(So when can we expect the Beta, VHS, 8mm, Hi8, SVHS, DVHS, VHS-C, HDDVD, LaserDisc, RCA SelctraVision, and CD-I versions? Personally, I’m holding out for the Pixelvision version…)
Disappointing indeed. They should at least have replaced that stupid digital copy with actually useful bonus features.
Disney probably thinks that this year’s holiday season will be the tipping point for BD, which dirt cheap players and everything.
Still my main complaint is not with the barebones DVD (at least you get a commentary, unlike with Cars and Ratatouille), but with the nonexistent soundtrack CD.
There have already been several great offers ($99 or less) for Blu-ray players this year and there will be many more for Christmas season. I don’t think Blu-ray is expensive.
BTW, today I saw “Up” for the first time. Can’t wait to see it again on Blu-ray.
Oh really? I’ll have to get my hands on that, I just hope they’re good quality players.
What’d you think of the movie?
It’s especially irksome when DVD releases like Coraline are able to put the Digital copy and actual bonus features onto a single disc.
Hmm… sucks for you DVD guys that they don’t fully feature the 2 disc dvd.
However, the blu-ray sounds great! I think all the extras sound very cool. Hopefully they pull off a great cine-explore. I love that feature. Does anyone actually know why they don’t have cine-explore on the Monsters Inc. blu?
I’m especially looking forward to Dug’s special mission. I love Dug, he was so funny.
Although I got a feeling we won’t see this release in the Netherlands 'till at least February… Up isn’t even in theaters yet!
They didn’t do it for a Bugs Life either, they only do it for new releases it seems.
Though I’d be kind of shocked if they don’t make an exception for the Toy Stories next year.
Woohoo, bring it on! I took the plunge yesterday and got my Blu-Ray player. I bought the Blu-Ray of Ratatouille and just spent basically the entire afternoon watching the “Cine-Explore” version. Insert Russell voice here: “Wow, that was cool!” Can’t wait to see what they do with Up!
(Oh, side question, off-topic - is there a post or faq on this site with rules for posting fanfic in the fanfic forum? I’m working on an Up fic and am wondering if I can (or should) post it there.)
Amazon (US)'s listing for UP has been UPdated, with new lower prices now that the release date has been confirmed.
Note I have nothing to do with Amazon, I’m just posting this here for reference. So far, deepdiscount.com doesn’t have it up on their site (a site that’s usually a bit more, but offers free shipping). And of course it’s harder to search for a title like “Up,” one of the most common words in the English language…
When Amazon first made the listings for Up, they listed them at only 10% off the retail price (until a release date had been set). It seems their “real” prices have now taken effect. Note that Amazon has free shiping if you order at least $25 on the same order, if not you’ll pay a shipping charge. They also have a pre-order price guarantee (if you pre-order an item and the price drops before it comes out, you get the lower price) though I’ve had times where it wasn’t automatically applied and I had to call and get them to do it manually. At any rate, here’s what Amazon’s asking now for the DVDs for pre-orders in the US. To me, the single and double normal DVDs seem a good deal; the bluray doesn’t seem like much of a discount off the MSRP. To those living in countries where the film hasn’t even yet come out… sorry. But it’s much better seeing it on the big screen anyway, so look forward to a treat.
As of today (20 Aug 2009) here’s Amazon’s pre-order price for Up:
-
One-disc DVD: $16.99
amazon.com/Single-Disc-Wides … 679&sr=8-1 -
Two-disc DVD w/digital copy: $22.99:
amazon.com/UP-Two-Disc-Delux … 855&sr=8-1 -
BluRay DVD: $31.99:
amazon.com/Disc-Combo-Pack-D … 877&sr=1-1
PS: So much for the pipe dream of perhaps including a physical CD with the deluxe sets. As I thought, Disney wouldn’t do it. Oh well. No physical CD for the Up Soundtrack…
Still bugged about that little issue, why would they do that with such a gorgeous soundtrack? Ugh,…
Still, final prices and the date being set in stone is a good thing, so we all know what to expect. The halfway point from the premier in the US and the DVD/Blu-Ray release is this week (the 24th I believe) so we’re halfway there! Dang that’s a long time,…
Yeah, still a long, long time till November… ::sigh:: I know it was inevitable that we wouldn’t get the physical soundtrack CD, but still disappointing. And I guess I’m not surprised that the Blu-Ray wouldn’t have much of a discount, especially since it has more in the way of bonus features. I wonder if the retailers like Best Buy and Target will have any good “freebies” - I have a Finding Nemo CD case I got from (I think) Best Buy when that came out on DVD.
Can’t wait till the the Up BD comes out!!! I’ve got all the Pixar BD’s so far, and Up will be a welcome edition. I wish I had surround sound!
Now is the time! The time to decide which store exclusive you want to get with your UP DVD. Well not really since the ads the week before release have most the exclusive details, but 10/13 until 11/19 Best Buy is offering a Steelbox case if you pre-order.
I’m definitely gonna get Up on Blu-Ray.
I can’t believe it’s only a month away already. I can’t wait!
Thanks Fett101 for the info about the free steelbook promotion at Best Buy. I decided to go ahead and get mine through Best Buy instead of Amazon because of the steelbook (hey, back for Ratatouille I had to go through Canada to get a steelbook, when a Canadian chain offered them!) The 2-disc DVD set (non-bluray) is currently $21.99 at both Best Buy and Amazon.
I don’t care so much for games or trinkets, but I wonder if any stores will be offering bonus DVDs, as Target did with Ratatouille.
Everyone, please post the various “bonus” and “extras” here when you find out about them.
The steelbook just gives you the book (like, right then) and you pick up the 4-Disc Blu-Ray (with DVD copy) on the 10th, correct? I really hope so, I need the 4-Disc, especially since I don’t have a Blu-Ray player yet, and NEED to see it RIGHT when I get it.
Hi everyone… glad to see the forums back up!
Well here it’s only the middle of October, and in my hand right now I already have… the Up steelbook case!
It’s quite nice… for anyone interested, the dimensions are: 6 3/4" high by 5 3/8" wide by 1 1/8" thick. That puts it about the same height as a typical bluray case (shorter than a normal DVD case), and about twice the thickness of a normal DVD amaray case – though I suppose it really doesn’t matter, as I believe you’re supposed to just take the discs out of whatever format case you buy (DVD or bluray) and put them inside the steelbook instead (rather than just slipping the entire amaray or blueray case into the steelbook). Note that I do not have the movie discs yet, just the steelbook case… and I’m keeping it shrinkwrapped until the movie discs are released next month.
These steelbook cases are available exclusively (apparently) from Best Buy.
If you want to get them, you have two choices:
(1) You can pre-order the movie online at Best Buy online. First you have to select which version of the movie you want (1-disc DVD, 2-disc DVD, or BluRay version) and then find the page where the steelbook case is listed separately (do a search). It’ll have a “$7.50” price for it, but if it’s pre-ordered on the same order as one of the “Up” discs, it’ll change that to “$0.00” at checkout. This is what I did (I didn’t know there was a second option), and strangely, the very next day got an email saying my order was ready. Well it was only the steelbook that was ready of course (not the actual movie discs) but there’s a mention to pick it up within 8 days to prevent it from cancelling (I don’t know if it actually would cancel or not; I don’t typically buy from them online). So I went down to the store to pick it up, and of course will go down again once the movie’s released to pick up the actual movie discs.
(2) According to the sticker on the steelbook case itself, it seems you can also go into any Best Buy store that has these cases in stock, and “buy” it for $7.50 – and that $7.50 will be your deposit for when the movie comes in. You would then keep your receipt showing you paid a $7.50 deposit, show it once the movie discs are released, and pay the difference for the discs. Of course that also means technically that if you want to buy the movie discs from another store (perhaps if another store offers bonus discs or toys as extras) you can still buy the steelbook case by itself just by paying the $7.50 deposit (and just not bothering to come in and pay the difference once the movie discs come out). So you could technically just buy the steelbook case by itself for $7.50 and buy the discs elsewhere (though if that’s your plan you have to do it in person at the store, for if you pre-order online your credit card will be authorized for the full price of the movie, while at the store they’ll only charge you that $7.50 deposit initially).
What it says on the back: (for in-store instructions, not over the net):
PRE-ORDER TODAY TO GET THIS FREE STEELBOOK CASE.
STEP 1: Present this deposit certificate and Steelbook to ANY casheer between 10/11/09 - 11/09/09.
STEP 2: Pay the $7.50 deposit toward the purchase price of the bluray disc combo pack or standard DVD and obtain receipt for verification.
STEP 3: Retain your receipt verifying your paid deposit. To obtain credit for the deposit, your receipt must be presented when picking up the bluray disc combo pack or standard DVD.
STEP 4: Return to the store where deposit was made between 11/10/09 and 11/27/09 (Availability date is subject to change. Product will be held 2 weeks after arrival date). Proceed to customer service. Present cashier with deposit receipt. Pay existing balance due on bluray disc combo pack or standard DVD.
And then there’s a paragraph with all the little fine print.
At least on-line, ALL versions of Up qualify for the free steelbook case (I ordered the 2-disc standard dvd version myself).
The steelbook is offered only at Best Buy, and only from 10/11/09 to 11/09/09..
So for those who want a steelbook case, it’s pretty nice – but you can get it only when preordering Up from Best Buy (either online or in the store). Cutoff date is 11/09/09.
Standard disclaimer that I have nothing to do with Best Buy.
Now I wonder what the other stores will start offering…
Wow, sounds nice, miafka! There’s something so much more official having a steelbook case, it’s almost like a declaration that you’re a fan of the film.
