"Up" coming to Blu-ray/DVD.... in November

I really regret clicking the link to that review. I REALLY REALLY REALLY do.

The stills looks INCREDIBLE, as stated previously.

Gosh, I can’t even express it without being repetitive.
Pheewwwww…just a few more weeks. Thank goodness my parents got a Blu-Ray player recently.

Oh, wow, great stills (and thankfully some things we haven’t seen in stills before). Love the one with Little Ellie, but of course you know the one that got me was [spoil]“You’re a man of good taste.”[/spoil]

Haha, nice line reference karly! I think I could pull any of them out, (and actually, I’m gonna be posting the entire script on a twitter account, probably starting tonight. I wonder how many tweets it’ll take!). And I’ll admit I like Muntz until [spoil]the second half of the dinner scene (actually, it’d be more like breakfast now that I think about it! It’s right after they wake up)[/spoil] plus, this younger look is so dapper and snazzy!

Sorry for straying off topic there, hehe,…

But in all seriousness, the quality is so fantastic, I hope the digital copy comes in at least 720p, drool So much eye candy!

Nothing much new, just a small update.
For those interested in the Up steelbook case from Best Buy, they’ve now doubled the price for the steelbook listing. You basically “buy” the steelbook for a certain price, then it becomes “free” when you order your choice of DVD online (or if in store, whatever you paid for the steelbook is credited towards your DVD purchase so it becomes “free”).

But I guess too many people were buying the steelbook cases at $7.50 with no intention of buying the movie later on, and placing them up on ebay. They were $7.50 (which would’ve turned into “free” if you bought the movie from them)… but no more. They’re now $14.99 (though again remember, they’re still free if you later buy the movie from them… this only affects those people who had no intention of getting the movie from Best Buy and for whatever reason, just wanted the steelbook case by itself).

They seem to be back in stock online, and most local stores in my area have them in stock as well. It’s just now you have to pay more upfront for it (and will have a bigger credit later on when picking up the actual movie discs).

It seems Steelbook cases are the latest thing to get people to buy a DVD from a particluar store. The new Star Trek movie coming out a week later will have a steelbook case if you pre-order the movie from FYE (chain of entertainment stores, FYE.COM). Not sure about on-line yet, but I was able to preorder the steelbook edition at my local FYE here in California (in-store pre-order SKU# is 400282959964, you leave a $5 deposit).

Odd, when I tried to pick up my Steelbook the other week, the girl at the cash register initially charged me 15 USD…I mentioned that it said $7.50 on the box, and she admitted her error, so if anyone is going to try to pick up a Steelbook and the ad says 7.50, give it a s hot, and see if you can get a 50% discount. shrug

That happened when I got mine, I just had to tell her to put me up for the preorder rather than just the steelbook. It might be different now. I initially told her I wasn’t getting the movie from them, and changing it to the preorder fixed it. I actually will be getting it from Best Buy now though because a friend of mine works there, and they’re gonna be open at midnight for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s release.

I was on the phone with my sister earlier, and she had Iron Chef on (muted) in the background, and suddenly said, “A commercial for Up!” So I flipped to Food Network and caught part of it - they were plugging the upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release, and showed yet another snippet from Dug’s Special Mission - I was laughing out loud; that is going to be so cute!

Less than 2 weeks to go!

Geez, it’s almost 11 days away exactly. This is getting exciting!

You guys are lucky, my dad ordered online and I have to wait a few additional days for Wal*Mart to ship, haha.

If the information provided by amazon.de is correct, the German Blu-ray and DVD versions will be released on January 21st, which is a bit earlier that I thought.
I just hope this time we will indeed also get a 4-disc Blu-ray set, including DVD and digital copy (for those who need it).

So far all earlier Pixar Blu-rays released over here (as opposed to most of Disney’s non-Pixar releases) came just with the Blu-ray(s).

Keep an eye on Disney Channel! I caught a little segment this morning called an “Up for Adventure Fun Fact,” promoting the DVD/BR release. They gave a little lesson on airships, the difference between a blimp and a dirigible/zeppelin, sprinkled with snippets from the movie. Clips include spoilers, although if you haven’t seen the movie, most probably would make no sense out of context. They do, however, show [spoil]the shot of Carl, Russell & Dug sitting outside Fenton’s, with the Spirit of Adventure parked above them.[/spoil] I’m assuming there will be more than one of these segments, but this is the first one I’ve caught.

Monday, 11-2 - I caught another one of these: this one was about Dogs and the various jobs they do, with (of course) several brief clips involving Dug.

Has the Luxo+UP combo been canceled due to the lawsuit? Does anyone know?

Areadvd.de has posted details on the German Up releases.
There will be a DVD version (including an audio commentary and both shorts, btw.), the regular 2-disc Blu-ray and the big 4-disc box (Blu-ray + DVD + digital copy).

In France there will be three similar editions as well, to be released December 16th, according to amazon.fr.

Haven’t read or heard anything about it. I wasn’t gonna be able to get it though, if that $200 pricetag was real, that’s just sickening honestly. Still, it’d be nice to have.

Agreed about the Luxo collection price point. At first I thought it was a mistake. Who would pay 200 bucks for just a storage case w/ a lamp? It’d be neat to have but it’s almost criminal to have people pay THAT much, considering the regular Bluray is only about $40. (It’s cheap compared to the Luxo pack, at least…)

It wasn’t going to be 200, they have since lowered it to 170. Still too high, but not 200 high. Plus this was only the suggested retail value, often times stores will slash it even further.

But I just want to know if it’ll even make it to shelves. I asked Lee Unkrich on twitter and he said he didnt know either.

Yeah, I don’t know what they were thinking, especially when the UK’s supposed to get it with 5 blu-rays for the same price. Crazy situation, I hope it’s settled soon.

Well, at least the lawsuit is settled now, but so far there is no statement about the fate of the Luxo Blu-ray box.
I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough, but the offer looked far from compelling anyway (especially outside the UK), so I won’t shed a tear if it is indeed canceled.

Funny the day I ask it gets settled, but yeah Id still like to know if its canceled for good. need to know weather or not to hold off buying UP for the combo.

Actually I went ahead and bought UP and Monster’s inc because there’s a good deal on amazon right now (okay technically my mom did, as a Christmas present ) I guess if the lamp combo does end up releasing I can always sell UP. Im sure by the time Christmas comes around I’ll know for sure if its been canceled and be able to sell my sealed UP copy.

I just wish someone would make this lamp available. Luxo can make it themselves even, they shouldn’t need to ask for any permission from Disney/Pixar.

Three interesting news bits about DVDs today.
New DVD Price war, LA Times Up DVD Review hinted at, and US and European Up DVDs have different running times.

#1 is that there is a price war starting in DVD prices – $10 for many popular DVDs that are about to be released (including the new Star Trek). Target and WalMart started it, and Amazon is matching prices (at least with Target, there’s free shipping included too… I don’t think Amazon is doing free shipping under $25). There’s a big article in today’s LA Times about the latest DVD price war:
latimes.com/business/la-fi-c … ?track=rss
“…10 most popular DVDs that will be released soon, including “Star Trek,” “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to $10…”
However note that even though Up will defnitely be a best-seller, it doesn’t seem to be included (both Amazon and Target show normal prices for it, even as Star Trek and Potter are showing $10), and that only the 1-disc versions are being discounted. 2-disc and 3-disc special editions (of Star Trek, for instance) are at the exact same price they were. For myself personally, I want the 2-disc normal DVD of Star Trek (and also Up) so I’ll just pay the difference. But if you were sitting on the fence whether or not to get movies like Star Trek, Harry Potter, Night at the Museum 2, etc., $10 shipped (at least from Target) is pretty good.

#2: Early review of Up DVD from LA Times hinted at.
On this main “Topics” page at the LA Times’ website right now:
topics.latimes.com/entertainment … es/2009-11
One of the topics is:
Pixar’s UP Won’t Let You Down
It’s a review of the UP DVD, but it has a November 8th date on it (today is Nov 6th). When you click on the link, it currently says “Page Not Found” (probably because it’s not meant to even be mentioned until Nov 8th). But we can see the first sentence:
UP Walt Disney, $29.99/$39.99; Blu-ray, $45.99 The creative team at Pixar has become so skilled that it can take a loosely plotted story… [more]”…
at which point you have to click, and the full review hasn’t been placed up yet. But from the title of the article one can infer that the LA Times definitely gives a positive review of the UP DVD. Since it has a date of Nov 8th, expect it to be online in two days.

#3: Clicking on the link totoro listed earlier for the German Up DVD release:
amazon.de/Oben-Deluxe-Peter- … 592&sr=8-2
it shows a running time of 92 minutes.
Compare this to the proper/original running time of 96 minutes on the US/North America release:
amazon.com/Single-Disc-Wides … B001KVZ6FW
This is undoubtedly because of the NTSC/PAL difference (difference in TV standards). So remember, if you live in a PAL TV system country (UK, most of Europe, Australia, etc) you’ll be watching the film slightly sped-up and at slightly higher pitch than original (or the way it was projected in theatres). For an hour-and-a-half movie, that turns out to be about 4 minutes fast.
