Video Games

I’ve been playing a lot of Dissidia: Final Fantasy lately. That game is so awesome. The battle system is pretty easy to pick up, but requires some skill to really get the hang of it. It is a really fun battle system though, and the fights really do look like the ones in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. I’m still working on completing the story, and I currently have Cloud leveled up to 41. The only legitimate complaints I really have are that I would have liked to see at least 2 stages per game, instead of one. I would have also really liked to see a cameo from another Square game, like Chrono or Sora. Maybe for a sequel.

I also recently picked up Final Fantasy XII, which is my first numbered entry in the series, after VII. I think I’m about halfway through, and so far it’s been alright. My major problem is with leveling up. It seems like I’ll be fine in one area, but then two areas later, I’m underleveled again. I guess I should be doing the hunts. Aside from that, I like the game. The battle system is enjoyable, the visuals are amazing, and the game overall has alot of polish. I really liek the license system, too. The story is kinda shaky, but I’ll have to finish the game before I can make any final calls on how much I liked it.

Last, I downloaded Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and it’s fun, but really tough. Enemies are all over the place, and a lot of them respawn if you reenter their area. The visuals are nice, it’s got the classic score in 16-Bit form, and it’s a fun old school sidescroller, but you have to play the levels a few times, to finally beat them.

I love Dissidia, but I haven’t been playing too much of it. School, catching Up screenings, and drawing have kind of taken over my life at the moment, I’ve mostly been doing that or hanging out here. I agree that there aren’t enough stages, and I especially hate the ones from 6 and 8, they’re too crowded and small. There’s a lot to the characters though, I love how robust the system is.

I just downloaded the demo for Dissidia and seems a lot of fun, I’m not very good at it but I’m sure I’ll get better if I get the full game. I like the really cinematic fights and the easy-to-use controls, the fact you don’t have to memorise huge button combo’s is particularly appealing…

I’ve just gotten round to finishing Final Fantasy XII, I’ve had it for a while but I’ve only just finished it, and I have to say that it’s quickly jumped to being my favourite ever FF game, and one of my favourite games period. The storyline is really excellent and I like the removal of ‘random encounters.’ Trust me, the ending of the game is perfect.

I guess that’s why I was kinda disappointed that there were no main FFXII characters in Dissidia, I was hoping you’d be able to play as Balthier, [spoil]Judge Gabranth[/spoil] is alright as a hidden character but I’d rather have Balthier…

Yeah, I was pretty surprised Vaan wasn’t in it. I would think they had enough time to put him in.

Vaan’s not really the main character though, I suppose for the other games there was a set ‘here is the hero, he’s the main character’ thing going. But with FFXII you could argue that Balthier, Basch or Ashe is the main character, and their roles swap as the story progresses. Also I guess that seen as no one has a set role or weapon class it would have been difficult to make move-sets…

Anyway I just downloaded Final Fantasy VII for my PSP so I’m having a great big nostalgia trip…

Oh, that’s awesome, Halos Nach Tariff. I want to do that, but I need to get a another memory stick. I was thinking about having one pretty much just for games, so I can download Crash Bandicoot 3, and one of the Spyro games.

Well, that was kind of the situation with Firion and Bartz in Dissidia, but they gave them both different sorts of moves, Firion being a weapons master and using everything possible, including magic, and Bartz being a mimic and copying moves from other characters. Besides, they had to get super creative with a lot of the villains, such as Garland, Cloud of Darkness, Jecht (he’s incredibly over-powered if you ask me, some of those brave attack combos are WAY too strong) Ultimecia, Kuja, Golbez (he’s pretty great) and Kefka.

All in all, I think they did a great job, but I think Cloud of Darkness should be replaced with Xande. Using her would be like using Necron instead of Kuja, or Zeromus instead of Golbez. Or how’s this for a concept, Ozma instead of Kuja. That’s fair, XD

I think they should have used Yuna and Seymour instead of Tidus and Jecht for FFX, there are already too many white-haired bishounen in Dissidia, more female characters would have been cool.

For XII they could have done Balthier and [spoil]Cid[/spoil], or Ashe and [spoil]Vayne[/spoil], if they wanted to keep Gabranth in they could even have done Basch and Gabranth…

Oh well, I’m not complaining that much, it’s still a fun game, and very pretty to look at.

The only problem with the downloaded FFVII is that it’s a straight port so it doesn’t utilise the full PSP screen, there’s a huge black border round the edge with only a tiny screen in the middle for the game (around 3’‘X7’’ but I haven’t measured it) but I guess the small screen is something of an advantage seen as the graphics are kinda dated…

Halos Nach Tariff: Basch would have been a beast in that game. sigh I guess I’ll have to make do with the onion knight (who is a beast in his own right).

Kingdom Hearts is pretty much all I’m playing at the moment. But that’s okay, because it rocks!

I think Tidus should be in over Yuna. I’ve never played X (though I plan, too), but from the little I know and have seen I’d consider him the main character from X. Plus, I like the way he plays in Dissidia.

If we were going ot try and get more female characters in, I would say use Ashe. Basch would be cool, too.

That stinks about VII on PSP, but I still would like to have it… I still have my original copy of VII, but I wouldn;t mind playing it portable. I still need to beat that game…

Kingdom Hearts does rock., except for certain aspects of 2. I am really looking forward to 358/2 Days. I hope I can get it when it comes out.

As far as I know, only the main characters of the respective Final Fantasy games and the end boss (or the boss who is somehow connected to the hero) appear in Dissidia. But I haven’t played it yet, so I can’t tell. My brother plans to order this game some time this week but he can’t play it since I still have his PSP here^^
Oh, I am so looking forward to play Squall again <3

Some Argentinian players of the Monkey Island games have pulled off the most hilarious prank of the decade (and it’s not even April Fools’ Day)…

totoro: I recently saw that. “What could possibly be SCUMM?”

In Dissidia the two characters picked from each game are generally the ‘hero’ and ‘villain’ who have most in common, eg. Tidus and Jecht, Cloud and Sephiroth etc. So I’m not really complaining about the available characters, I just would have rather had other/more available. Oh well no doubt the sequel will address this…

Haha, there’s so many characters I’d want in the sequel. I want Kain, Rosa would be good for a ranged character, Rydia, Galuf, Locke, Edgar (lots of opportunities for crazy attacks there), Sabin, Tifa, Red XIII, Cid from VII, Vincent, Zell, Seifer, Vivi, Steiner, Auron, Kimahri, Wakka, Seymour (just so I always have someone to beat up), Vaan, Basch, Balthier, Ashe, Lightning, Snow, Noctus, Sora, Riku (KH), Luso, and last but not least, Roxas. Don’t really have a thing for Roxas, but they could utilize a great moveset for him.

Yeah, it’s wishful thinking, and most of those are heroes, but I can dream.

I’d through Chrono from Chrono Trigger in that list, as well as Xemnas and Ansem (I prefer to call him that.) to get some KH villains in. Maybe Axel, too. Even though, it has nothing really to do with Final Fantasy, I’d love to see Neku from The World Ends With You, too.

Also, does anyone else want to see this series on a console at some point? If they can get all this material into a PSP game, I’d love to see how much we could get with on a console.

Uhhh, what are you all talking about?

Dissidia would be pretty nice on a console, but the multiplayer would be a bit strange (2 different screens, Ultros would be useless). I think it’d be nice though considering the MASSIVE amount of content they could include, especially if they don’t try to spend most of the data on graphics (far too many games do that nowadays).

I didn’t think about Chrono, Frog, Magus (ooh, he’d be fun), and a huge plethora of characters I can’t remember from Chrono Cross.

Wow, everyone seems to be playing RPG nowadays… Am I the only FPS and racing fan here? :frowning:

Last Wednesday, I burned an entire afternoon trying out new games at my local Internet LAN cafe (under the cinema I frequently visit). I just discovered another cool FPS: Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2! It’s like the marriage of my two most favourite FPS: Swat 4 and CS! I mean, it’s more straight-up shoot-everything-that-moves like CS, but with the tactics and gadgets of Swat 4! I plowed through the opening mission (which was like the Alpine lodge finale from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) and through the second act in Las Vegas (where you can shoot the slot machines and watch the coins tumble out, laugh out loud!). There’s tons of cool things you can do, like rappel through windows (and even shoot upside down!) and blind-fire while taking cover behind pillars. Oh gosh, it’s almost like GI Joe or the A-Team or whatever big blockbuster covert-operative film you care to name, it’s sooo awesome!

Another game I liked was Need For Speed Undercover. It has the smokin’ hot Maggie Q as your handler, and you get to play a cop going deep into an underworld organisation to take down a smuggling operation. Along the way, you’ll meet friends (with sweet Christina Milian as your love interest), make enemies, and most important of all, race fast cars at insane speeds. The whole vibe of it feels like a Bad Boys/Miami Vice kinda movie, especially with the whole ‘undercover cops’ and coastal setting (the fictional Tri-City). A couple of missions are cool, like the Highway Battle, which is a derivative of the Canyon Duel from Carbon where you attempt to overtake an opponent while weaving in and out of traffic, and the usual police pursuits from Most Wanted. But the rest of the game feels repetitive and that you’ve played this before, especially if you’ve tried the previous titles. I got bored pretty quickly, although I must say, I loved the visual look; very slick and sophisticated. The opening sequence is amazing, and looks like it’s straight from a feature film. :sunglasses:

I don’t know whether I mentioned this, I’m also really excited for Modern Warfare 2, which comes off as James-Bondish to me. Here’s the trailer, I think this is a trend games seem to be taking nowadays, they’re increasingly becoming more cinematic and almost film-like. The ending is jaw-dropping, and I especially like the release date: 11-10-09.
