I play some FPS, most notably TF2 (although I’m always a Medic, I’m garbage as anyone else cept maybe scout) and a bit of CoD4, but I’m terrible at FPS in general. Racing games I can enjoy, but not realistic ones. Mario Kart is ok, but the racing game I REALLY love is F-Zero GX for the GameCube. Hands down, the greatest racing game ever. If you haven’t played this game and you have a GameCube, you MUST play it. It is very hard, but once you get good, you’ll be HOOKED. It’s so amazing, I’m waiting for a Wii F-Zero game sooooo much. GX is just perfect.
Same here. The only FPS games I play are TF2 and Halo 3. I don’t really love Halo 3, but I’m pretty good at it and my sister always makes me play it with her. As for TF2, my best classes are Pyro and Scout. It’s a very good game, but I can barely play it due to my computer not being up to snuff, and I heard the console version isn’t very good. (plus I think my mom would be annoyed by the violence )
F-Zero is pretty fun, especially the Gamecube version. I love the extreme pace of the game, and it’s very challenging. The track designs are nice as well. I play Mario Kart more than F-Zero, though. The Wii version is terrible, they messed it up with the powerslides, cheap CPUs, cheap items, and bikes. My favorite versions are N64 and DS, very fun.
THANK YOU. You’re the first person I know besides myself that thinks MKWii is broken. The items break the game, and it enrages me. 2 words. Blue. Shell.
How on earth is someone in 7th or 8th place gonna benefit from hitting only the first place racer? They’re not. It’s a cheap item that makes the game excessively frustrating and difficult. Plus, you get items like the pow block that begin to bombard you, and the fact that they affect the entire race roster and are unavoidable in most cases is pretty much terrible. What were they thinking. Keep it simple.
The BOW Block is alright, if you keep hitting the Wheelie button while you’re on a bike you won’t get completely spun out by it, but the blue shell is just intolerable. In single player I’ve literally had 3 come at me in a row on the final lap of a race when I’m a good distance ahead. They’re useless if you’re in the back, and the only way they can be beneficial to anyone is if you try to catch another person in the explosion as well. If I remember correctly, in MK64 the blue shell doesn’t fly, so it’s possible it can hit other people besides the top placed people, so it could actually be helpful. Whoever changed that needs to be fired.
Another item that they decided to throw in, the lightning cloud, is the most annoying item ever created. If you get hit with it, it’s a huge struggle to pass it to someone else, and they’ll usually return the favor to you 5 seconds later.
And have I mentioned the track designs? The new ones are just ridiculous. What does a shopping mall have to do with Mario? It’s barely even Mario themed, they just threw in some of those island people from Super Mario Sunshine. There was only one track based on Super Mario Galaxy, the one with the giant tree, which was basically a ripoff of DK Mountain. There could have been a lot of great tracks derived from SMG, but I guess they felt the need to come up with a bunch of stupid, completely random tracks. They also totally butchered most of the retro courses. SNES Ghost Valley 2 is a fine example. A great track in the SNES version, they went ahead and doubled up the scale so that the track is way bigger. I suppose it makes sense considering there are more racers, but I would’ve went towards more authenticity. Anyway, the track doesn’t even work in the MKWii game engine. The turns are too tight and if you hit one of the blocks on the border, there’s no chance of you escaping. That’s probably the biggest example, but about 70% of the retro tracks were ruined.
Anyhow, it feels like they picked the character roster out of a hat. Rosalina was a good addition, but other than that…Baby Peach, Baby Daisy (not even a real character), Dry Bowser, Funky Kong, etc. are all stupid ideas. Dry Bowser was in NSMB for 5 seconds, and he didn’t even have a name. They would have been better off including a more significant character such as Petey Piranha. Oh, and I was totally disappointed over the lack of Toadsworth, the greatest Mario character in existence.
And I haven’t even gotten to the worst part yet. They messed up battle mode. What used to be an exciting mode that could be hours of fun with friends is now a joke. First of all, they FORCE you to be on teams. You can’t do a free for all, which is kind of stupid since that’s what made it fun. Second, they introduced this stupid point system. Instead of you being out of the game if you run out of balloons, they respawn you with another set of balloons. The only penalty is that the team loses some points. There used to be a lot of pressure to stay alive, but with this new “feature” there’s not a huge penalty, since you can probably quickly gain those points back thanks to the cheap items. The additional battle mode, coin runners, is kind of weird. I don’t even remember how you played it, but it didn’t even feel like battle mode. I’ll give them credit, though, because the new arenas are actually OK.
As for the online play, it’s not too bad, but you should be able to actually talk to other people when you have their friend code. But even then, you have to pick impossible to use phrases from a list. Other than that, my only problem is that they tried to disguise lag by trying to calculate where the other karts will be when the connection messes up, and it just looks weird. But it’s probably better than having actual lag.
I hope you enjoyed my giant rant about this terrible game.
Actually, I did. Very much in fact, you make a ton of great points. It’s kind of sad that Nintendo feels like they need to change a title that had nothing wrong with it to spread to a casual demographic. Everyone already loved Mario Kart, but messing with the formula to the point where anyone, and I mean ANYONE can win no matter the skill level, frustrates me to no end. There’s no reward for doing well except a shower of blue shells and enormous amounts of frustration.
Moving on, I’ve been having an issue with Dissidia lately. Being, the story mode. It seems like I’m doing all these battles for no reason, Sure it gets my character’s levels up, but it’s getting excessive when Shade Impulse has like 4 chapters and 5 floors each. I just want Shantotto and Gabranth already! Sheesh.
Mario Kart Wii is an excellent game with multiple people, but on your own it can be very aggravating, especially trying to get 3 stars in each tournament cup…
Personally I always use the items on frantic mode, seen as I often play with people who don’t own wii’s or have ever played Mario Kart I often continually beat them, which gets both boring and embarassing, but with the items on frantic the game is much fairer.
I don’t really like FPSs, with a few notable exceptions (the Metroid Prime series for example) I’d much rather play an RPG/Adventure game if i’m on my own. Of course if I have guests I will break out the multi-player shooters and racers…
I went to get Dissidia today only to remember too late that the UK release date is tomorrow…
Oops, I’ll pick it up some other time.
There was a time when I considered MK64 to be the best entry in the series, with MKWii being not nearly as good. I’m stil not sure about the best, but MK Wii is still insanely awesome and is definitely not a “terrible game”
Are the items in the game cheap? Yeah, they are. I’ve lost races because of a multitude of items hitting me at once. It happens, but I still win the majority of the races I play. It’s just part of the game. I used to get really ticked that I would get flung around when playing as a lightweight character, but it’s built into the game system. Now, I can’t say for sure if it’s truly unfair of I just stink with lightweights, but I think it’s just part of the game. Mario Kart has always been a casual game. Sure, us hardcore gamers love it, but so do a lot of people who don’t play alt of games. Sure, there may be some cheap moves for casual players to use, but I don’t think it subtracts enough form the skill of a good player. Skillful players will still find a way to win. The majority of the time, they are still going to win. I will admit, as Halos Nach Tariff alluded to, the CPU’s do seem ridiculous. It’s annoying, but it’s not a game breaker.
The track design is fine. Remember Toad’s Turnpike? What did that have to do with Mario? Granted, there are some annoying course, but that’s typical of pretty much any game with stages, fighting included. I like Coconut Mall, because I think it offers a good challenge. Mushroom Gorge was a cool NSMB level, and I really like Koopa Cape. Rainbow Road stinks though. I can’t speak for all the retro course, as I either haven’t played, or am not sure I I did play them, but they play well in the game, and I think the N64 levels transferred really well. Super Mario Kart, and MK Wii are different games, they can’t be completely authentic and they need to play well in the Wii version. I’ll admit, I prefer the N64 courses, but that might just be nostalgia
Characters are ok. Waluigi wasn’t a character until Mario Tennis, so I’m fine with Baby Daisy. I think Funky Kong’s cool. .And they are certainly better than N64, though I can’t say for Double Dash. It might not be the best list ever, but it’s still pretty good, and there are some neat characters in there. I think Dry Bowser is awesome.
Can’t talk about the battle mode as I don’t know if I have played it, and if I did it was only once.
The online rocks. No, it’s not as good as the other consoles, but considering it’s on Wii, MK Wii’s online is amazing.
In summary, is MK Wii perfect? No. The ability to bump really bugs me, and it is certainly very annyoing when you get hit by a blue shell, and then another item. The one thing that really bugs me is when you get hit my alot of the items, you lose your item. That’s extremely annoying. Still, there’s more good than bad. It’s still Mario Kart, and it’s a really good game. Definitely not a terrible one.
As for Dissidia, I stopped playing the Story Mode. I’m on Bartz, and I really don’t like the way he plays, or care about his story. I’ve played through pretty much every character I know, and wanted to play as, and the story mode started getting boring at Firion. It’s pretty much the same thing every time, with some deviations because of character… I’ll get aroudn ot it eventually, but right now I am just enjoying leveling up Cloud in Quick Battles.
Is me the only not a fan of game here? Well, I do enjoy GH3, mmm, uh, WiiSports, mmm, err…Diner Dash, Fifa, PES, uh…Burger Tycoon, Insaniquarium…
I agree with Halos Nach Tarriff on genre choice, but I like some racing games and stuff like Devil May Cry, RE4, and Portal.
As for Metroid Prime, I love love LOVE that game. I can do a single segment run of it in just over 3 hours. I did one the other day, only saved once, on accident about halfway through, and finished in about 3:28 or so. Echoes was just the opposite, terrible. The beam ammo system is absolutely useless, and the story arc is way too obscure. Way too far off from the good Metroid games. Also, the environments are far too confusing to make any sort of progress feel simple, and the dark Aether segments have terrible mechanics. The bubble system is horrible and frustrating. Corruption was great, but it holds your hand way too much. MP1 had the whole exploration thing down pat. Corruption isn’t as expansive and lush, but it’s got some amazing environments, and the combat is spot on, especially with the Nunchuk. The world just seems a bit more restricted and straightforward. MP1 just shines, it’s a gem in the gaming world, excellent game.
Ah, I’ve never tried for a speed run of Prime, or indeed any other game, it’s just never appealed to me, I’d much rather go around looking at everything (exemplified in Corruption where you get credits just for scanning certain items.)
Personally now that the Wii motion + has been released I’m hoping for a ‘realistic’ sword fighting game, hopefully in an RPG style but I’d be fine with a straight out fighter too. By realistic I don’t mean authentic sword moves but rather everything you can do with the Wiimote is emulated by the game itself, for example you would be able to wind enemies with the sword hilt as you unsheathe (see the ‘Zuko Alone’ episode of Avatar, near the end, to see what I mean) and perform all manner of combos both with movements and button presses…
I haven’t really gotten to play any of the Prime games, yet. I want to get the Trilogy for Wii, but I’l lproably be waiting until Christmas. I got into Metorid not to long ago through Super Metorid, and I want to play more games in the series.
I think we’d all liek to see that ,Halos Nach Tariff. I (along with most others) have been waiting for the “lightsaber game” pretty much since I heard about the Wii. Have you tried Wii Sports Resort, yet? It’s not quite what we want, but it’s is really good, and incredibly satisfying. Red Steel 2 looks to be pretty good, and it’s got good press so far. Too abd it got pushed back ot next year. Personally, i would rather see a third person game use this. Miyamoto has said that the next Zelda may exclusively use WiiMotionPlus, and I woud love to see that. Nintendo will proably nail the controls. So, if someone doesn’t come out with a game like that before Zelda, they can look to Zelda as an example. It would eb cool to see it used in an RPG. Personally, I’d like to see it in a Kingdom Hearts game, but any RPG would be cool.
Well there is Dragon Quest Swords, which I own. It’s a really good game, but the controls could be better. Also, some of the optional bosses at the end are downright impossible. I can’t even touch the last 3 or 4. That is first person, but it’s a nice implementation of the motion controls.
Also, I need to pick up MP Trilogy at some point, I have all 3 games already, but I want to play MP1 on the Wiimote, the controls for MP3 were GREAT, and MP1 is a great game.
KH on the Wii would certainly be interesting.
ffdude, have you seen the case for MP Trilogy? It’s probably the coolest Wii case ever.
Yeah, KH on Wii would be interesting. Although, I think it coudl be possible to translate the main gameplay ovver to the Wii, I think it would be better as a side-story game, somethign along the lines of Birth by Sleep or CoM.
I have been playing a game called Titanic:Adventure Out Of Time
A 2D strategy game.
Plot:
During World War II,you find a clock which takes you back in time to the Titanic to solve a mystery. The thing I find confusing is you start out as an old woman but when your on the Titanic your a young man.
The game is quite challenging, actually But most strategy games are! Its a good game, anyways. Here are some screen-shots:
One more:
That Titanic game looks awesome!
Ive been playing Far Cry 2 lately for the Xbox360.
That game is flawless! HUGE maps, and you can do ANYTHING. Very cool game
Titanic: Been there done that. I finished the game after 5 years. Played since 7. Puhh…pretty decent game.
I decided to pick up Halo 3:ODST. I have to say while the single player campaign has some awesome missions, it’s just far too short to get drawn into it. The real “show stopper” here is the new multiplayer mode called Firefight, where you fight off wave after wave of covenant badies.
Unfortunately, Firefight isn’t a matchmaking type deal, and you can only play with people on your friends list and not people around the world. But after all is said and done, I’d say ODST is a decent game. The package comes with two disks, one with campaign and Firefight, and one containing the entire Halo 3 multiplayer experience. Basically put, you really don’t need your original Halo 3 disk anymore.
Would I buy it again? It definitely didn’t seem worth $60. In my opinion, they should’ve just made Firefight an Xbox LIVE arcade game for $20 and called it a day. That being said, the campaign is enough to keep you entertained for a while but doesn’t really beg to be replayed other than for achievements. Firefight will hook you for many a day and of course, there’s always the Halo 3 multiplayer to fall back on.
Okami = greatest game. Ever.
Ratchet and Clank = greatest game. Ever.
Shadow of the Colossus = greatest game. Ever.
Ico = greatest game. Ever.
No, I can’t pick just one.
From that lsit I’d say SotC is top, but it really is hard to decide, I just really like the art of SotC.
I finally picked up Dissidia Final Fantasy on Sunday so I’ve been playing that, I’m not very good at it, I seem to keep winning via pure luck, but it’s certaintly visually impressive and I’m sure once I improve skill-wise it will be even more fun.
picked up Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days at gamestop on Sunday. So far, I’ve been totally addicted .
