Video Games

Well apparently all PSP games that are released from now on will also be available for download from the PSStore, probably to sell the idea of the shudder PSPGo!

I actually like the design of the PSPGo, though I don’t like how they’re taking this all-digital game distribution route. Just another way for them to impose their DDRM restrictions on us. Not to mention you can’t share the game once you’re done with it with your friends.

I just played Left4Dead with my friends at a LAN centre after a movie. It was freakin’ awesome, like CS but you kill zombies instead of terrorists! These suckers ambush you when you least expect in and come in endless waves, not to mention those horrible Boomers who puke all over ya (ugh!) and the creepy crying Witches…

My two friends and I played one map with a stranger whose username was Nobody. The final stage ended with a boat coming to rescue us. We almost defeated the last wave and we had one Tank and a couple of zombies left to pick off. The plan was someone to man the turret gun and shoot the Tank while the rest distracted it by running rings round it. Unfortunately, all of us for some reason decided to play Rambo and exited the house, resulting in us being chased by the Tank like headless chickens.

I was the first to return to the house, and once I made it to the balcony, quickly grabbed the turret to finish off Tank. Unfortunately, he managed to kill one of my chums while the second got incapacitated by a group of infected. I jumped down and managed to ward them off, but before I could heal my ‘downed’ comrade, I was caught by a Smoker with its long tongue. With no one to help me, and all my friends lying dead or dying, we were pretty much goners.

Then the ship came. What did Nobody do? He ran on to the ship without saving us! He managed to type an apology before ending the mission being the last survivor. Needless to say, my friends and I = Epic Fail. Nobody = Stinkin’ Coward.

But it was tons of fun, and I had a blast since it was my first time playing this game. I was the one killed the most and in need to be revived, and I had a couple of ‘friendly fires’ in the more chaotic moments.

I can understand the idea behind the PSPGo! But I don’t like the design, it’s way too small and the button layout is, uhm, weird. Having the Analog Stick right next to the D-Pad means playing any button intensive games (such as Monster Hunter) is going to really hurt your hands after a while.

And making the screen smaller? The fact you won’t be able to play your old UMD games on it unless Sony initiates some sort of ‘swap-shop’ program? I think I’ll stick with my normal PSP.

Anyway I haven’t had a chance to play Left4Dead yet, mainly due to my lack of a next-gen console, but I’m sure one of my friends will get it at some point…

I have to agree with Halos, here. The PSPGo! will most likely do pretty bad with the hardcore crowd. The idea of having the screen kinda do the DS thing wasn’t a terrible, idea, and the regular PSP is pretty big, but there’s really no incentive for me to upgrade. Sony really just doesn’t seem to get handhelds, as to be frank, the PSP itself wasn’t all that great, and it pales in comparison with the DS. Granted they do have some good games, both out currently, and coming soon. But my main reason for buying it was Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, though I will probably pick up LittleBigPlanet, and FF Dissidia.

Just got Wii Sports Resort, and I am seriosuly enjoying it. My favorite game right now is the swordplay, which isn’t quite as dead-on as I wanted it to be (though I was expecting to replicate the Star Wars duels, so my expectatiosn were a tad high), but it is insanely fun. The other games are really great as well. This really got me excited for what can be done on the Wii now. Ther’es a swordplay event where you get to fight 100 enemies, and I couldn’t help slashing down enemies in Zelda or Star Wars. I can’t wait for Red Steel 2 now.

I played quite a few games in the past two weeks.

At my guy friend’s house, we were playing Fable 2, and I had no idea that it had a co-op mode. It felt like I was smashing buttons most of the time, but it was very fun to explore Albion and do quests with him.

Next, Assassin’s Creed. I had orginally bought it for the PC, but the amount of requirements it has just wanted to make me cry. Got to try it out on a platform though, and it’s graphics are excellent, and the story as well. I love historical fiction games, so it’s a favorite for me.

Ninja Gaiden…why is this game so hard? Why do I play this game if I cannot win? Probably because of the story and the bizarre concepts behind it. Like ninjas versus ninjas versus werewolves in Venice. The shocking blood spectacle and the Wolverine claws on your feet don’t hurt either.

Finally, Civilization IV for the PC. Now, I love history. I take pride in knowing the past. It’s scary for someone like me to be seeing texts like “Cyrus converts to Taoism!”, “Kublai Khan has constructed The Kremlin!”, and “Imhotep has just been born in St. Petersburgh!” constantly popping up on the side. I’m getting a little tired of the board game feel, but I still find it fun to make a screwed up version of history. Mine being were the Spanish empire has founded Buddhism, Judaism, and Confusionism, is home to several world wonders such as the Collosus, and has adopted the civics of Slavery and Serfdom. I would have paid ten dollars instead of the twenty I had spent though, it’s really like a board game with quotes and classical musics repeating itself. And the total out of characterness in the other civilization leaders is what I can’t stand. Can you imagine Alexander the Great saying ,“It’ll be way cool!” ?

I’ve played Halo 3, Call of Duty 1,2,3,4 - Assassin’s Creed… pretty much every big title to come out since 2007. (Well, at least those that came out for the 360.)

But the other day, while browsing the gaming rack at my local Best Buy, my eyes catch a game that I’ve heard tons about. A game that came out over two years ago. A game that was only $20. Yes, I’ve finally purchased Oblivion.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen videos and screenshots of said game. My friends have talked about it time and time again. I just never saw the pizazz in it. So, I decided why not pick up the Game of the Year edition that had both expansions bundled with it, and for only $20.

So I come home, boot up my computer (I bought it for PC because I’ve heard of the huge mod base for it.) pop in the disk, and wait for the lengthy install. Once the install was done, I searched for a few good mods to try (None that altered gameplay mind you, just the appearance.) And I was blown away, especially when I saw these: (All with highest settings and HDR.)

Just wow. Not only the visuals, but the gameplay was far better than I expected. The game just sucked me in. Before I knew it, I’ve been playing for 40 hours (Not at one time…). The game I thought I wouldn’t like I turned out loving. (Which would also explain why I’ve not posted in a while.)

It’s turned out to be one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, and I’m not even halfway through it yet. There’s so much to see, do, make, it’s unbelievable. It’s so immersive and unique. After playing Fallout 3, this is a welcome change from all the gloom and doom of the wasteland. No, this is a colorful, vibrant world filled with many unique creatures, weapons and armor. (Not that Fallout 3 wasn’t a great game because it was.)

But anyway, I’m rambling. It is an Elder Scrolls game after all, it was designed for that purpose, just like Halo is more designed for multiplayer. But Assassin’s Creed could’ve had a little more depth to it and let’s hope Assassin’s Creed 2 does.

Aside from this monster of a game I’m currently working on, I usually play Xbox 360 because games are always more fun with friends. In fact, even crappy games are awesome if they have co-op and good friends.

PS: Well met, lizardgirl  And are you an Argonian by any chance?

Wow, what a terrible joke!

Haha, Oblivion is pretty immersive, I’ve played a lot of it, fantastic game. Fallout doesn’t come close in my opinion, Oblivion just has so much more to do.

Holy molly, Remy14, those screenshots are beautiful! How old is Oblivion? Is it RPG, RTS? (I’m guessing RTS? Is it more like point-and-click adventure puzzle-solving like Myst or gathering resources/grinding/leveling up a la World of Warcraft?)

Any FPS fans here play SWAT 4? I actually got a copy from a friend two years ago and only recently gave it a go and I’m hooked! I’m on the last mission of the Sketchkov Syndicate expansion (I think, it’s the mission where you take down the gang boss and his brother in a high-risk arrest in a warehouse). The cool thing about this game is the objective to actually catch the perps and take them alive, which is much more altruistic than Counterstrike, Rainbow Six or any other FPS’ simplistic aim of “kill the bad guys”. You also get more bonus for keeping your team alive and reporting any injured hostages and collecting evidence, so essentially it’s quite true-to-life in its depiction of real-world policing.

You have an arsenal of non-lethal weapons at your disposal to subdue the baddies; paintball guns, beanbag shotguns, electric Tasers, and my personal favourite, the pepper spray (I derive great pleasure in spraying a good dose of mace in the bad guy’s face before cuffing him, ohohoh! :stuck_out_tongue:). There’s also many ways to surprise your opponents with flash-bangs, pellet grenades, and smoke-‘n’-gas. You also get cool gear like night-vision, gas masks, flak jackets, and the indispensable Opti-wand, which you can poke under a door to take a peek in the next room. And of course, when the S.H.T.F., you can arm yourself with the big guns like assault SMGs, sniper rifles, and the good-ol’ revolver.

There’s also tons of cool situations to pick; hostage standoffs, armed robberies, terrorist sieges, high-risk arrests, and even a bomb-defusing mission or two. Planning is crucial; you have to assign your team member orders (going lone-wolf Rambo-style is not recommended), make split-second decisions (shoot the hostage taker or not, chase a runaway or stand down, etc.), and above all else, always check all corners! You never know where a lurking crim might just pop you in the back!

Freakin’ awesome FPS, and you actually have to think twice before pulling the trigger!

“Drop your weapon, and hit the floor!” :sunglasses:

Remy14- Haha, yes, how did you guess that I’m an Argonian? I do tend to flip between being a Dunmer and an Argonian, though. What do you like to play as?

And I swear it’s uncompletable. I must’ve spent over one hundred hours on my previous character without even doing any of the main quest.

Actually TDIT, Oblivion is a first person RPG (there’s a 3rd person camera too, but it’s not as good), you’re totally in control of all your movements. There’s a main quest line, but you’re free to do absolutely anything you want in the world (which is incredibly massive I might add). I actually never really go farther than the first few Oblivion gates in the story, it’s just not a fun quest line to me. There are some factions and guilds to join, the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild (that’s a fun one, but prepare to do LOADS of lockpicking), the Arena (super useful for low levels), and just tons of quests to do. There’s a ton of ways to build your character, things like races, custom classes, major and minor skills, birthsigns, it’s incredibly replayable. It’s just an incredibly immersive open world RPG, and a very excellent one at that. If you’ve played Fallout 3, think almost exactly like that, but in a more medieval and lush world, and with swords, axes, and spells rather than guns and ammunition. There’s also a lot more to do in my opinion. The gameplay is almost exactly the same though, except for the turn-based-like system in Fallout. (I forget what it’s called)

Oblivion looks truly amazing. I just wish there was a demo version so I can see if my hardware is actually up to the challenge.

Hah, just a feeling…

I’m usually always an Argonian, too. (I’m also a big lizard fanatic.)
But I’ve tried out all the races one time or another.

And I agree, it would take forever to see and do everything Oblivion has to offer. I just finished the Shivering Isles expansion main quest, and that adds tons more side quests to do!

totoro - You can try this site: srtest.com/referrer/srtest
Scroll down to the T’s and find The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to see how your computer would run it. I haven’t tried this myself, but I hear it works great!

Here’s what I generally do regarding races in Oblivion

All around/Swordmage - Dark Elf (Dunmer)
Warrior - Redguard (Orc and Nord are a good choice)
Mage - Breton (High Elf is too weak against magic for me, but they make good swordmages)
Theif - Wood Elf (Kahjit is really good, but I don’t like them)

Argonian, Kahjit, and Imperial seem like terrible races regarding stats, but I understand playing as them (well, at least Argonian and Kahjit) just so you can be a lizard/tiger.

I don’t know when Madden 10 comes out, but when it does, I’m going to be hooked on it.

Never been a fan of sports games, but then again, I’m not a fan of sports in general. Just not my thing.

I’ve been playing a lot of No More Heroes for the Wii lately, incredibly violent, gory, hilarious, and insane. If you’re into very obscure, almost trippy games kinda like Killer 7 or Rez, this is right up your alley.

Also, the demo for Dissidia: Final Fantasy. One of the most involved demos I’ve ever played, I’m incredibly excited for this game. Moreso than at first even, I already wanted it, but the gameplay is so clean and intuitive. Any fan of Final Fantasy or any sort of fighting game in general with a PSP needs to at least check out the demo, it’s great! Cecil is awesome. Beaten hard mode (should be called High Level mode instead, it’s not that much harder) with him like 10 times already.

I never really saw the point of having a video game that simulates a sport. Really, why have a controller in your hand where you pretend to be a nose guard in football when doing it in real life is much more fun?

I tried Spore while on my trip. Being unoriginal, I played several species that are based off of movies. One being the Balrog from LOTR, another being the Hungarian Horntail from HP, and Kevin. It’s a fun way to burn time, making species, unfortunately, Spore being a multigenre game is its downfall. Since it doesn’t focus on being one kind of game, the various modes of gameplay aren’t very detailed and it can be tedious to go through some parts of it. So to me, Spore isn’t much of a game, it’s more a really fun creatue creator.

I agree totally, FounderofAzn. I like the general idea of Spore but I don’t think it works in practice because once you’ve played through all of the stages a few times, even with a new species it becomes a bit boring.

I just beat Castle Crashers for the first time. The ending caught me off guard. It’s SO random. xD But the game is fantastic, definitely the best XBLA game.

Castle Crashers is great, but the online doesn’t work right. Behemoth said they were gonna patch it, but never did. Pity, it’s such a perfect co-op game. It’s ridiculous how many characters you can unlock, like practically every enemy in the game. It’s awesome. It’s a pretty long game too (darn that Corn boss)
