WALL-E's Antagonist?

So, some of us have seen some clips and gotten a bit more info about the movie, but there’s still something that’s been kept under tight wraps… Who is the bad guy, anyway? I mean, come on, there’s gotta be an antagonist in all of this, right?

So, guess time! If you happen to have read a review that answers this question… please keep it to yourself. Sorry, but I’d rather this just be for speculation by those of us who don’t know. Feel free to laugh to yourself if we’re totally off though.

So, my guess is [spoil]AUTO. He kinda has this HAL thing going for his character design. It just seems evil to me.[/spoil]

I basically haven’t watched any footage of WALL-E so far, but I got the vibe that it might be an antagonist-free movie. Sort of like Finding Nemo.

Then again, I might be completely wrong. Just speculating.

That’s possible, but I’d argue that Nemo had an antagonist. It was only for a small part of the movie, but it had one. Indeed though, he wasn’t purposefully evil really, was he?

Spoiler:

[spoil]I’ve heard that Sigourney Weaver plays a bad bot, too. Don’t know if it’s true. Maybe we’ll have some showdown with her…does anybody here know SHODAN, V.I.C.K.I. or any other crazy Virtual Intelligence?[/spoil]

…>.> Gee, thanks Tannen. Because I didn’t just ask that people who know for sure don’t blurt it. Nope, didn’t ask that at all.

Oh, wait, now I remember.

Sorry (really), didn’t read everything in your post. Hm…must improve English skills. Oh dear…

BUT…I haven’t seen the movie for myself and I’m only 90% sure about it… so let’s call it a guess.

Maybe it’d be a good idea to say what the spoiler is or give some sorta hint on it instead of just saying “spoiler” and having the first thing to highlight be the major thing. -_-;

Okay, so is it a guess? It’s only speculation? You didn’t get the info from a review or anything? Ugh, you’re confusing me.

Don’t be mad at me.

No, I have no official Info that he is the bad guy. But…I mean…just look at him. Did you see the new “Robot Featurette”?

Okay, so it IS just speculation. Good. phew You just sounded so sure and everything. Don’t do that to me. My nerves can’t take it. XD Sorry for yelling at you.

Yeah, that’s what I was saying. The bot just looks evil. No, I haven’t seen the new clip. I’m avoiding it. Seen enough clips for one pre-movie. XD

I’ve removed the “bad parts”

Now it’s complete speculation…

What about [spoil]Fred Willard[/spoil] as the bad guy? Ok, he’s [spoil]dead[/spoil] but…I’ve seen a picture of him with both thumbs up in a not so cool context.

OK, if there is a bad guy, and I’m pretty certain there is…what do you think how he/she/it will end? Do you think he/she/it will be killed or he/she/it will become a nice guy/girl/thing?

Ugh, I’m confused.

Wait, who? You mean the actor? I’m very confused now. O.o

Well, he plays the [spoil]CEO of BnL and BnL[/spoil] doesn’t look like the nice corner shop to me.

Huh, yeah that’s an interesting thought. [spoil]Buy N Large as a whole[/spoil] could end up being the bad guy. Hm…

There has to be a reason why [spoil]all humans are getting fatter and dumber on the Axiom[/spoil]. Like it’s on purpose.

This is an excellent question. I think it brings up relevant points about storytelling in general. Does a story have to have a villian? Or can the antagonist just be society or fear of the unknown in general? (Like Lizardgirl, memories of Finding Nemo just popped into my head.)

From the looks of things, I think if WALL-E had to have a bad guy, it would be [spoil]Auto. Auto represents everything Buy N Large stands for, from controlling society to the point that all society does is follow whatever is stuffed in front of everyone.[/spoil]

I love the thought that you don’t need an antagonist. If you watch some of Studio Ghibli’s films, a number of them do not have an antagonist.

Like ‘Spirited Away.’ You can watch that, but in the end, there really isn’t an evil villain to be vanquished.

The same could be said for ‘My Neighbor Totoro,’ ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service,’ or even ‘Whisper of the Heart’ to name some others.

I kind of like films that don’t have black and white good guy/bad guy connotations. There was a line I heard once that in real life, noone ever thinks of themselves as evil. Usually the people doing ‘evil’ in one sense believe they are doing ‘right.’

I don’t care personally. villain or not, if it’s written well I’m happy.

I think Buy n Large is the antagonist. They said Auto follows his programming and he tries to get rid of the last plant. So basically Buy n Large does not want the humans to go back home. If you notice that most robots work fine on the Axiom, but all the WALL-Es broke down (with one acception). They were supposed to stay in the starliners for 5 years, but the humans were still there for 700 years. I can see why: Everything but the humans is made by Buy n Large. They have everything they want. Why would they want to leave? Even Shelby Forthright lies to the humans.

Spoiler about Shelby Forthright:

[spoil]He lies about Earth. He is telling that the WALL-E units will clean it up but he constantly reminds everyone that Earth is too toxic to live there (which is not true). There also something about a Directive-A113 and I think it’s “secret”/meaning isn’t going to be nice.[/spoil]

In the “Lots of Bots” featurette you can see Shelby in one Picture. IMHO he does look a bit…like a bum/drunk. The total crazy CEO in a mad world. If they would had given him a scepter and a crown he would make the perfect king. I bet it will be fun to hear him speaking.

Hey Axoim, can you edit your post with a spoiler warning please? Thanks.
