I’ve wanted for quite some time now for Disney to make a 2-D animated film of Don Quixote.

A 2-D Rip Van Winkle Disney flick would be cool. Especially if it took place in New Orleans. Though that would be copying off The Princess and the Frog.
A 2-D version of Humpty Dumpty could be cool.
I don’t know about you guys, but I always wonder what it would be like if Disney had the original idea for one of the Pixar films, like Toy Story in classic Disney 2-D.
Good idea. I would go see that.
I’ve had this idea for quite some time; a 2-D animated film of The Phantom of the Opera. I think Disney could do a great job of that.
A sequel to Treasure Planet. It’s a really great movie (I guess I’m just attracted to films with father figures), and seeing a reunion between Silver and Jim would be really cool.
Other than that, I’d say doing a good medieval type movie would be cool, with lots of talking mythical creatures and whatnot. I love stuff like griffins, chimeras, minotaurs, satyrs, and stuff with Greek and Roman mythology would be awesome as well (but more serious and realistic than Hercules; a bit too cartoony and whimsical for what I’m looking for, but still great).
Hmm, since they tend to go with literary works, I’ll try and think of a few that I’d like to see get made into Disney animated movies.
For some reason, I think I’d really like to see a Huckleberry Finn adaptation done in 2-D animation. I can just see it in my head looking very beautiful, and the story has great themes for kids and adults alike to take in.
I just think something about it would work really well for some reason. Who knows, it could have a Fox and the Hound feel to it.
Phantom would be nice. Having a hard time envisioning it, though, because if it were to be an animated musical, then would it have the same songs as the live-action musical? The songs are fantastic, but not very amusing to a small child.
If it’s the novel you’re talking about, then I’ve got no problem other than making it kid friendly. But if they were able to do it with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, then they could do it with The Phantom of the Opera.
Maybe if Disney did a simplified version of Les Misérables. But I also like the Huckleberry Finn idea.
FounderofAzn - You’ve given me some great ideas for movies I would love Disney to animate, and most come from the world of the musical:
But Phantom and Les Misérables as a Disney animation would be some of the most entertaining Disney magic in a long time… and would probably better suit a musical touch than the opera that they are.
The Elves and the Shoemaker; I’m surprised that this was never considered for even a Silly Symphony.
If it weren’t for Warner Bros. having already gotten the rights, a trilogy of movies based on Jeff Smith’s Bone, and in 2D animation to keep the aesthetic of the comic.
Then again, this is probably WB’s plan, with the exception of the medium, though I hope The Princess and the Frog does well enough to convince WB and other studios to give traditional animation a chance again.
One thing I’ve always liked about classic Disney is how they promote classic stories, legends, and fairy tales, and added their own wonderful twists. I never would’ve gotten interested in stories like Hamlet if it hadn’t been for The Lion King, Bambi if it hadn’t been for their specatacular movie version of it, Oliver Twist if it hadn’t been for Oliver & Company, nor even the legendary heroism of Mulan, Aladdin, or Tarzan if I’d never seen the classic Disney movie, believe it or not. Disney did a good job presenting both the imagination and inspiration of these stories to a younger audience, and at the same time made adults feel like kids again.
OK, enough rambling XD. Time to get back on topic…
Anyway, I’m not sure what I want to come next out of their 2-D animated studios. I’ve grown interested in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but I don’t know if that would be a little too dark for them to present?
Maybe something like A Midsummer’s Night Dream, only not based on the entire story, probably, but just have similar elements as it has. You know what I mean? Like how they put Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet references in The Lion King.
The Secret Garden would be nice. Maybe as just a little animated short, like they did with The Little Match Girl.
I would’ve come up with more, but my brain’s frozen thinking of it right now. I’ll have to get back to that later.
P.S. So Tangled will be coming soon…is it in 2-D or not?
Off topic, but Tangled is going to be in CGI.
Calvin and Hobbes would probably be dangerous to do. I think Don Quixote is a great idea.
Thank you, FounderofAzn, Captain Pan and luxolll for supporting my ideas. I’ve got another one - a 2-D adaptation of Oliver Twist. I am also intriguied by bright dot-dasher’s suggestion of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde film; the studio has done semi-dark work before, but, to the best of my memory, there is currently no animated adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Don Quixote is actually a project that Walt was apparently attempting to make or making, but it never got realized, I believe. I don’t know too much about that, but that is why I brought it up, because I believe that it is an excellent idea and should be revived/revisited at some point.
You have to remember that John and Ed are running the animation division at Disney now. This new leadership has opened up the possibility for projects that wouldn’t neccesarily been thought of or gotten through the old reign.
Yeah, I think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde would be good if they can lighten it up some. There was a part in Pagemaster with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I think. And possibly Scooby-Doo. I don’t remember, but I’ve seen pieces animated, but not a full length film. Don Quixote fights windmills because he has a wild imagination. Sounds perfect for Disney.
I actually remember that episode of Scooby-Doo; I don’t remember why Jekyll and Hyde were in it, though. I agree that either that or Don Quixote would make for cool Disney animated films; definitely they’d work especially well in 2D.
Thanks for supporting my Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde idea, guys. I think Disney might be able to pull it off. Only with how Disney is nowadays, we may worry about if it’ll lighten up too much, and change too much.
Actually, Disney has already made an adaptation of Oliver Twist, kinda. Oliver & Company was a modernized version of it with a twist: most of the main characters are animals. I’m not sure if Disney might do another adaptation of it.
Still, they made a short adaptation of A Christmas Carol - Mickey’s Christmas Carol (which by the way, is very enjoyable and includes quite a few cameos), but they are having the new A Christmas Carol movie as well. Not to mention they had Alice in Wonderland, and now they’re going to do Tim Burton’s style.
So, who knows? Maybe they will do another adaptation. But will it be too similar…?
I’d also like to see them do The Velveteen Rabbit, if Disney can animate tearjerking scenes again. I remember The Velveteen Rabbit used to make me cry! It’d be a really nice Disney Classic.
I also like Disney creating their own original animated stories, like Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear.
I agree, BDD. I think that some of the best Disney movies are the ones that aren’t already known. I think that I would like to see Disney do something kinda like what they did with The Lion King; turn an old Shakespeare classic and make it into a talking animal thing.
