Why does everyone hate this movie?

It should’nt be hard if you have imagenation…

I know what Geoff means. I can see how for some people it may be a stretch of the imagination too far, going from the creative to the almost ridiculous. For me, the story and heart of the film (as well as the beautiful scenery and setting) is what overcomes this, but because of the whole anthromorphic cars thing, it unfortunately puts Cars into the more child-like area of Pixar’s films when really it has more to offer.

I don’t agree with you on these factors, but now that you mention it- what’s up with their EYES!?!

Then again, we’re all trying to argue about the realism of a movie about a world where talking cars live everyday lives.

For me, the main issue with “Cars” wasn’t the story line but rather the length of the movie. The character thing never really bothered me much, even if the idea of talking cars lacks reality.

Okay, Cars wasn’t supposed to be realistic. It’s no stupider than Finding Nemo or Toy Story as far as I’m concerned, and those are the 2 most popular!!

Screw it, I just bought the DVD today!

Originally I didn’t want to see Cars because of the whole “kiddy film” and talking cars thing. I was little then and didn’t love Pixar like I do now. When I finally saw it and loved it. I probably loved it so much because my expectations were so low, but still it’s a great movie. I CRIED at the end, not because it was sad, but because I loved it so much.

So yeah, I guess the whole idea could shoo people away…

My dad can’t watch it. He always asks, “Where are the people? Cars can’t drive themselves.” He can’t see past it

I don’t HATE this movie persay it’s just… the world doesn’t make sense to me which does hamper my enjoyment somewhat. Overall however it IS my cousins older sons’ favourite, and I can certainly think of worse movies to watch with him. He’s not thinking on that though anyway. He LOVES this movie. He loves vehicles in general and he agrees with me on Lightenings story it seems. He really loves it. But while I can like the characters (and I did get a thrill recently when I went to the US and was on route 66 with my tour group, we even saw this one place which had these old cars round the back with eyes in homage to this movie), it’s the set up and world I have difficulty with.

All of the other Pixar movies have perhaps this one area where you have to throw your disbelief away for the sake of the story- like Toys talking, Monster world from your closet, Sentient rats wanting to be Chefs… but other than the odd hiccup here and there they can and often do make sense all in all once you are able to supend that disbelief in that one area. The Cars world… it just doesn’t make sense to me at all. I mean how does it even work? How do they breed? Why are there windows and doors and other things in some buildings which look like something HUMANS would use rather than cars with tyres? Isn’t being a train rather annoying when you can only see the tracks? WHAT do they use tractors for? What is the point of keeping them like cattle? Biofuel doesn’t seem to be all that typical given Lightenings reaction to the organic stuff he drinks. So what are they FOR. Don’t keep them just for the ‘lulz’! That’s not good! It doesn’t make sense!

Overall I like the plotline etc. Lightning McQueens arc and change is also interesting and I like it. But I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief in a world of talking cars with no other living beings, I cannot even begin to figure out how it works. It’s not like Monsters Inc which had some problems to me that the creators obviously didn’t intend but can be explained by other means and interpretations and still remain realistic. Overall it can make sense in a way but with Cars… It just… doesn’t make sense to me. I couldn’t get ‘lost’ in this movie. I get distracted by the things which don’t make sense to me.

It’s a crying shame too, if they had been humans or beings like in M.I. instead of talking cars, I possibly could have got lost in it. Loved it even.

I don’t really HATE this movie. The underlying story and the main character arc like I said is pretty good to me (and I also really like Doc)… but the WORLD. Agh!

Because it’s a movie. There’s your answer.

Uh, I thought it was plausible enough for a fantastic, fictional children’s film(that is loved by many adults and teens, like myself.)

It is, but I hate when people say stuff about it not being so believable and realistic. It’s not. It’s a movie!!!

I agree Jessie, but sometimes it is nice when the fantasy of a film seems like it could be real. I think Cars does pull this off. However, it is often frustrating when you’re just like, “There is no way this could be true!”

Well, what was sooo realistic about Monsters, Inc.? Just putting that out there, not arguing… :unamused:

Yeah, and how do they breed? Just sayin’!

mentalguru seems to think it’s weird we don’t know how Cars breed. :unamused:

How do toys breed?

How do robots breed?

Well, I can believe that the world of Monsters, Inc. could be real. The way the monsters use doors to travel between worlds is extremely intelligent and is easily believable. Of course, there is some controversy about the whole door thing, but pushng that aside, I am sure how you can see how the monster world as depicted in the film could be true.

No film with any element of fantasy is realistic, just because there is that element of fantasy! However, a good film can make the fantasy seem real. Some say Cars is able to do this; others do not.

How do supers breed? Oh wait, never mind… Anyway, the only realism to ANY ficticious movie is the emotion.

Are you refering to the world of Toy Story? Seeing as that is basically the real world (our world) with the fantastical idea that toys come to life thrown in, the toys don’t breed.

They are manufactured by humans in shops and factories.

-sighs- Yopu’re missing the point. Toys don’t need to breed, that’s something they just can’t do, toys being alive is just that one form of disbelief you have to take to get into it really. They’re MADE though of course. Same with robots. But HUMANS are there to create them, and it certainly makes sense in the latter case with robots. Toys coming alive is the essential magic to the story but it’s the one thing you suspend in order to enjoy the story. Cars has multiple problems though with the world at its very core.

You see, CARS is a whole world, with no humans to create them. At all. None and there’s no clear thing either with those strange bugs which look like cars. So how are cars made? How did that come about? The world doesn’t function very well for me that’s all because it doesn’t make sense, there’s just multiple questions wirring around.

The thing is it does hamper enjoyment with those questions around. The overall character arc is good. The world just doesn’t make any sense. What’s important to me is that I can get lost in a movie and believe it to begin with (other things come later), these questions throw me out of it and mean I can’t suspend my disbelief.

It just doesn’t make sense to me. Hey, I’m not saying you can’t enjoy it. I’m just saying, and it’s not the same argument with WALL-E or TS either at all- because humans exist which can explain why they’re there. Monsters are like humans in terms of being biological systems.

Monsters Inc is still a stretch but it makes more sense in that it’s pretty much a given they’re made like humans are made (I don’t have to go into details do I? This is PP after all.) They even tried to explain why monsters would want to scare children in a way.

Hey, if it doesn’t hamper your enjoyment that’s your business, it just really affects mine. Don’t see why I can’t say that. :unamused:

If the world doesn’t make sense, it just means I can’t get into it very well, and it really bugs me throughout watching the movie. It means I can’t get into the story very well and get ‘lost’ in it.

But you are arguing about how a fictitious movie isn’t realistic.

Alright then, fair enough, how do monsters breed? Can’t say the humans made them. They live in a monster world. They said it themselves. Mike isn’t wearing any pants in that movie. There’s nothing there.

Mater says, “Getting cozy at the cone, is we?” and “Good evening, you two.” then winks. So they do have their own way, apparently, according to the inside jokes.

If you haven’t noticed, cars have human things that are fit for them. If you haven’t noticed, they use switches on the floor to move things around for them and suction cups to hold the human things. Tables are low to the ground. They can use everything just fine. They are “born” oh sorry, built, into their jobs. A train is forced to be a train. A rocket is forced to be a rocket. A plane is forced to be a plane. In my cousin’s Cars book, Mater says that he wishes he could be a rocket so he wouldn’t need to be chained to towing cars all day. Sally says she wishes she could be an ambulance so she can help others better.

You don’t need to emphasize your words with caps. They have bold, italics, and underline right there for you.

For some reason I can tell you think I hate you right now, but I don’t. This is actually quite amusing to me in the sense of seeing other opinions. It’s nothing against you.

It’s pretty much established that Monsters are a species rather like humans are- biological systems as I said. That doesn’t mean humans made them. They probably evolved rather like we did. That’s pretty clear to me.

But in Cars we don’t get such an establishment. It’s not clear what they are exactly, and if they’re pure metal machines, it just seems weird to me… Do Cars (pardon me) have anything like that? Are they just built on some weird product line? It’s pretty hard for me to suspend my disbelief for that in Cars. That’s the principle thing like I said for fully emersing myself in a movie to begin with. I just can’t do that with Cars.

And I use a few words for caps, that’s not really a big deal. It’s not like I used wholly caps.

But I agree with a previous point, after suspending disbelief, fantasy can be made real if just for a moment. I just can’t get that with Cars. But why is someone made to be a train if it is nothing biological? It seems very restricting, and plus why are tractors made or bred? What is their function and why are they kept like cattle? If it is biological why are they kept like that at all? Domesticating them almost seems pointless. Like I said this hampers my enjoyment of emersing myself in the movie. Because it doesn’t make sense to me like that.

That’s just my view.
