Why does everyone hate this movie?

It was depressing, too different, and…the 2nd one was Lightyears better. Literally.

Yeah it was pretty different. [spoil]I felt that Buzz was too…space obsessed again before he was switched to demo[/spoil]

Aww, you didn’t like TS3, Incredigirl? :frowning: I guess that’s understandable, it’s not as happy-go-lucky as the other movies… I think that’s the only thing I disliked about it.

Anyway, regarding the topic, I love Cars! For awhile I wasn’t that crazy about it (but never at any point disliked it), but it really grew on me. I’ve come to love the sort of slapstick high-espionage feel it has, with some more comical/crude moments off to the side that I secretly do enjoy  Plus, 2006 is a strangely nostalgic year for me, and even minus Cars I always associate it with motor vehicles! Wonder why?

Before the movie came out, I thought Cars was gonna be so bad. I hated it. But them when I say it, totally fell in love and I can’t stop.

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t posted here before :open_mouth:

Well, let me start by saying Cars is probably tied for my least favorite Pixar film. But seeing as the 11 Pixar films are pretty much all in my top 20, I by no means disliked the film  I loved the humour, and the animation was beautiful. I thought Paul Newman was absolutely amazing as Doc, and I have a slight crush on Owen Wilson, even when it’s only voice <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/love2.gif” alt=“:loves:” title="In

Love" /> I suppose I can understand why some people think it’s the weakest of Pixar’s films. But in my opinion, to say it’s a bad film would be wrong.

Doesn’t his voice give you chills?

Paul Newman’s? Definitely  Sorta reminds me of an older Johnny Cash.

No!

8D I had a feeling that’s what you meant :stuck_out_tongue: I love his voice too. I’ve always liked Owen Wilson, ever since I saw him in Armageddon.

I liked him since he sung in Starsky and Hutch.

Ya to me TS3 was way depressing but i still love it. To me when you can make anyone get any type of feeling from something you make its specail. Sorta hard to explain. I figure, if they didnt care about them they wouldnt have been sad. So if they are sad at least you know its because they cared so much for the characters. ^^

I like it. Though to me it wasnt the same as other Pixar films. Like there wasnt a strong “message” in it. Theres nothing i emotionally conect to besides being there for friends, friends can be any place, and i love small towns. YD to me that wasnt good enough ^^’ i like to be touched and think about it over and over after i watch it. Cars just wasnt that.

So in other words if it’s a happy theme to the movie then it doesen’t have a message,if some dosen’t die,or close to dieing it’s not a “strong message”.I’m sorry but that really dosen’t make sense to me…

The message was “Life’s a journey, enjoy the trip.”

They made it very clear that the message was to basically slow down and enjoy life because it goes too fast. Hence why they used a racecar.

Can’t get much clearer than that.

xCarsLuverx: I guess what khstar was trying to say (I don’t really know if this is what she meant exactly - feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, khstar) is that she didn’t emotionally connect with the characters from Cars as she did with the other Pixar movies. I know, because that’s how I feel. It’s not that I absolutely hate Cars, because I don’t, it’s just that I can’t connect with the characters as easily.

Like I said, I don’t absolutely hate this movie’s guts, but it’s not my absolute favorite, either. It just kinda falls in-between, yanno? I think what I like about this movie the most is the fact that it has so many memories tied to it - good and bad - and whenever I watch it, it’s like 2006 all over again.

It reminds me of 6th grade all over again.

Ha, yeah I agree. It was even in trailers and posters for the movie!

8D That was my point. ;-p They even showed it all over for people who couldn’t get past how unrealistic it was.

Thanks Little_chef, it’s more or less my thoughts on it. Good story, bad setting for me to believe in personally. And it’s kind of a shame too.

For some reason I have little trouble for some reason in getting into stories which involve actual magic but the Cars world just bothers me and like I said fails to grab me and make me believe in it for some reason. And Cars doesn’t fit the bill of ‘guilty pleasure’, though actually no Pixar movie ever would. Granted this is because I have high standards for them. That’s also kind of what stories do in my opinion. I LOVE fantasy fiction, even though I don’t believe in real magic. But for a little while when you emerse yourself in a story for a short time you can almost believe it. And that’s kind of what I expect from Pixar.

But it does have to be said that people can’t always do what they like in stories.

Well actually that’s not true either, technically they really can. Of course they can, their characters, their creations. They can do what they want. Seriously.

But.

It doesn’t mean it will be as well recieved as it might have been though sometimes. Or that criticisers or questions don’t occasionally have a point. Of course I think some people are unsure of why this is seen as the least favourite Pixar, even if they share the sentiment. They’re just not sure why they don’t ‘feel it’ for this movie on the level of some other Pixar movies. I mean come on it has some definite good ingredients. Of course the reason may differ from person to person, and I do wonder if it’s because the level of disbelief is a bit much for som to take. For others it might be other reasons entirely. Media isn’t always one way, or even just between the creator and the reciever in that sense.

For some people the world of Cars is not a problem or an obstacle for enjoying this movie to the full extent it can be. For others it can be, and I’m simply one of those people. But the sequel could possibly solve some of these problems. And heck some of the other problems people may have with it. Perhaps the sequel can help both the characters and world to live up to their full potential and the l;atter to become more believable and something I can loose myself in. In terms of the actual story ARC, I don’t see it as necessary at all though personally. In terms of plot, there’s little loose threads on that score so a part of me is wondering what the heck they’re going to do. (I’ve heard things which sound like rumours though.)

We’ll just have to wait and see.

I agree with both crowds here.

I see how the believability is tough for some people. They are talking cars. And I do get what you’re saying when some people don’t get that same feeling when watching it. There’s something about this movie that I love, even if it does seem like a simpler plot to me than some of Pixar’s movies.

There must be something in Cars that’s redeeming even if not everyone sees it (not saying that you hate it or anything  Just that people who put it down might be blind to it): little kids love Cars. They can’t get enough of Lightning and Mater. Heck, the only person I can talk to about Cars is my four year old cousin. What I’m saying is, Pixar did it’s job and has a million toddlers pretending to be Mater and driving backwards in their yards. There must be something special in it, but it just touches little kids more than adults. Any Pixar movie is special to me.

I do have higher hopes for the sequel, though. Maybe it’ll redeem the world of Cars for those who didn’t love it the first time around. And maybe they’ll improve and make it deeper than the first. Same as you said, though, what they’re doing with the plot is a mystery,

It’s a bit weird how they’re not telling us anything more than what’s on the internet right now. Anyone else find that a bit weird?
