I think you got it the wrong way, as Disney did this before Pixar.
One more reason why I’ve been rooting for WIR over Brave! (Although I also genuinely like WIR over Brave as well)
And I am now following that blog! Because of how cool it looks, and I like Surfs Up to, so that’s a plus! Do they post Surfs Up stuff often there?
It is The Daily Show, and the gif is of their British Correspondent in residence, John Oliver, who is a great comedian in his own right. He’s my favorite of the show’s current correspondents!
A little off topic here, but I’m feeling a bit confused as to why some of my posts are being edited.
As for me, I think Wreck-It Ralph catches my eye quicker due to the Toy Story-like aspect of it. Despite that, I love Brave just as equally as Wreck-It Ralph; they are on the same level for me. I’m also happy that Brave won the Golden Globe. I’m thinking that Brave may be the winner of the Academy Award. I guess why I may want Wreck-It Ralph to win is to disprove a thought I have. If Brave and only all the next Pixar films continuously win, I’ll feel like Cars 2 getting 0 nominations last year may have been the Academy’s way of really trying to show how much they wish it didn’t exist. I know it’s not the best film even though I love it, and I don’t expect everyone to think it’s so great or artful. However, I think there did not need to be AS MANY complaints as there were. It didn’t even have to win, but if not a Best Feature nomination, at least something? Like how Tangled at least had a song nomination? The disdain for that film was more overdone than the amount of pop-culture references in a so-so movie. So, if Wreck-It Ralph wins, that may be proof that the Academy will not be biased towards Pixar films save for the Cars films. I guess what I’m saying is, as long as Brave wins, I just hope it’s not to prove a point. Either way, it’s complicated for me. I wish everyone could be a winner like Vaellope (and adorable!). But best of luck to all films, they deserve well.
I think the person is no longer as crazy about Surf’s Up as she was. She seems to be on a Ralph roll at the moment. But her Youtube channel has a few Surf’s Up videos!
Which reminds me, I should probably put Surf’s Up Blu-Ray on my wishlist too. I remember attending a talk by one of the animators during a SIGGRAPH convention in Sydney and being blown away by the water simulation. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to convince my friends to see it in cinemas, but we watched a bootleg copy on a friend’s laptop and it was totally radical, dude. Like glassy waters on the dawn patrol.
I can’t speak on behalf of EJE, but her reasons are probably the same as mine - you must have quoted an entire post. Usually, we quote the exact phrase or sentence we’re responding to, like what I’ve done with EJE’s post above. Sometimes, if the post is short enough, it’s alright to quote the entire thing, like what I’ve done with your one-sentence post above.
But we try as much as possible to isolate the actual item we are referring to, rather than wholesale copy-pasting the entire chunk of post. It just looks neater that way, and also avoids readers having to see an exact replica of the whole post sitting just above.
Thanks for asking, we usually mention the reasons behind our editing, but it’s always good to check if you’re not sure why or to find out more about forum rules.
As a big fan of Cars and its sequel, I can understand where you’re coming from. I, too, feel that the amount of disdain and dismissiveness critics have is overwhelming. As some of you would know, I was ready to hate Cars 2 before I even saw it (you can check my posts in the Cars threads for the evidence).
While I came away with my hope in Pixar (somewhat) restored, I must say that it was not one of their most higher-calibre efforts. Sure, it’s a good tribute to spy movies, and there was an attempt at some emotional pathos in Mater’s shame of his stupidity. However, I just felt that some of the themes and character developments were not well-executed (which I addressed in my trilogy of fanfic vignettes).
Having said that, I agree with you that the Academy should’ve at least given it a Best Score or Best Song (I love Collision Of Worlds) nom. I don’t think it deserved Best Animated Ghetto in the face of much stronger competition that year, but the Academy snub was painful, even with my annoyance at Pixar always getting the medal. Hmmm… I’m beginning to sound like Ralph and his green-faced envy at Pixar, I mean, Felix!
…
Like LQstudiesPixar, I’m rooting for WIR to get an Oscar. But it’s not to validate that the Academy didn’t snub Pixar in 2011 for Cars 2. It’s because I honestly think WIR was so much more original (despite its reliance on pop culture to a certain extent), heartfelt and, well, braver than Brave. I have a gut feel the Golden Globes, being the lesser cousin of the Academy, didn’t want to give an award to a “modern, pop-culture-savvy” flick, so they went a little old-school and conservative with the princess movie instead.
I also think there’s a chance the Academy might pull the carpet from beneath us and hand Ralph the statuette, to appeal to the younger crowd. I mean, they’ve got one of the rudest comedians on the planet hosting the Awards and, quite frankly, with eyeballs migrating to other awards shows (MTV Movie Awards? Spike Video Game Awards? H*ll, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards?), along with the old, stodgy board members choosing the boring, obtuse awards-bait fare and alienating the mainstream crowd, I think they might try something different this year.
Not saying that all the nominees are awards-bait (I’m interested in watching Zero Dark Thirty and Lincoln, for example). But, more often not, they usually are.
…
Not sure if these have been posted before, but has anyone seen the arcade trailers?
*Watch closely at about 10 seconds, when the player chooses a character. The cursor goes over Vanellope and she gets excited - then moves on to Snowanna and Taffyta. If you look close enough as the cursor moves on, you can see that she puts her hands over her face in a defeated, sobbing gesture.
^Those WIR game commercials are great! My personal fave goes to the Fix-It Felix one! It astounds me how they made it look like a legit 80’s commercial!
And just for the “wreck”-ord, let’s drop the whole “Pixar vs. WIR” thing right now… I am still um… biased, to the point I’ve been ranting about how much I love Cars 2 wayyy too much lately. Yes, I know I’m weird… but Pixar’s perfection to me! And so is WIR! Just wanted to say that… no offense, friends.
Oh yes, I did see those commercials! They’re so great because of how authentic they are, especially the WIR one!
And sorry if’m getting too involved with this whole awards business! I wasn’t even planning to watch them originally, but for Pete Docter’s sake, I might watch a little. I don’t think I was clear about how I actually don’t want certain films to lose. I wish everyone could be a winner, and the whole awards thing about one film being the best actually kind of annoys me. I sort of just thought it would be nice if Wreck-It Ralph could win since Brave won the Golden Globe, and that way we would have both of those great movies win an award! But alas, I wasn’t clear. Basically, if Cars 2 didn’t win anything, then I don’t really care what film doesn’t win after because I love that film as well as Brave and WIR the same. The awards thing for me is like the critic’s reviews all over again, and who needs that when you can have your own opinion, right?
P.S. That was a good catch on the Paperman easter egg, TDIT!
I love those vintage trailers. I love how Pixar and Disney do those fun sort of promotional things. Like the Monsters University website!
So I got the wreck it Ralph ap on my phone. I LOVE the sugar rush game. So much fun!
A little off-topic, but has a thread been created for the Disney Infinity game yet?
One thing I’m excited for is how Wreck-It Ralph is going to be not only in the new Sonic game, but also Disney Infinity! He makes a great addition to that game! Looks like Sugar Rush will play a big role and hopefully the other games as well.
^There hasn’t been an official Disney Infinty thread yet, LQ, but a thread I created called “Pixar game ideas” has sorta morphed into the “Pixar gaming in general” thread and a few of us have been chatting about Disney Infinity there. I’ve only seen Ralph as part of the lineup so far, but I have little doubt that Vanellope, Felix, and Calhoun will join the fun before long!
OWP: None taken! It’s fine to air your opinion as long as you’re respectful to others. Haha, “wreck”-ord, that’s a good pun, gotta shelve that in my mental drawer.
LQstudiesPixar: Thanks, I gotta watch again to see that the easter egg is true for myself. Seeing as screenshots gives me the impression it could be Photoshopped, although I highly doubt so.
Sorry, what does Pete Docter have to do with your watching? haha
EJE: I’m going on a Monsters U media blackout, which isn’t very difficult as I’ve got other fandoms to distract me. This wasn’t the case back when I was new to the fandom, but I found out that some promo materials dropped spoilers and basically I found myself subconsciously checking off scenes and screenshots I had seen when watching the movie the first time.
Ooh, if you’re talking about the .99 cent app that came with three games, I got that too. The Sugar Rush game reminds me of Mega Jump and Hero’s Duty of Age Of Zombies. I wish they actually made a proper Sugar Rush racing game, they have something like that on the official site, but the kart moves way too slow and the scenery’s kinda uninspired. In fact, the video game of the movie is pretty disappointing too, judging by the trailers and gameplay videos (and it’s only available on Wii to my knowledge).
LQstudiesPixar: That was one of the major reasons I got Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, so I can play as Ralph! Can’t remember from the promo poster - was Vanellope part of the line-up in Disney Infinity?
^Yep, that’s the ap I got! I assumed when I got it that the Sugar Rush game would be a racing one. I guess they didn’t want two racing games on the ap (Since Turbo has a racing app). But I’m addicted to the candy cane bounce one!
But yeah when watching the movie I was like "How COOL would it to be to have an actual sugar rush game!
Haha, I can see why [spoil]those two boys who shooed “Glasses Girl” booked the cabinets for the day with their quarters[/spoil]!
I think Sega All-Stars Racing might be the closest thing to a Sugar Rush-style racing game with Ralph in it, although I have yet to play it (I haven’t opened it yet cos’ I was busy and got other games to finish first). I hope Vanellope becomes a DLC someday, that would be so cool.
Some initial thoughts on the movie.
I loved the imagination and wonder that went into the character designs and the animation, and Ralph is a sympathetic protagonist with a well-written relationship with Vanellope (who was far more tolerable then I thought she would be).
The writting never misses a beat. The video game references had me grinning through the entire movie. Probably the best use of pop-culture jokes in a long time. The references in the Sugar Rush world focus more on sweet puns, and most of them are laugh out loud hilarious. There’s some heart beating under this simplistic story, and that’s because the film does a marvelous job at getting you to care about the virtual entities.
The finale is loaded with a variety of dazzling spectacle and I’m going to say that this is one of Disney’s finest climaxes in their cinematic history.
The gaming worlds are incredibly detailed. The first pan of Game Central Station is just jaw-dropping. It never overwhelms the story nor Ralph and Vanellope’s character development, rather it sets up the story and various subplots organically and convincingly. I knew that they [spoil]weren’t going to let Ralph die in the Mentos/Coke eruption.[/spoil] but I was still on the edge of my seat because they brought Ralph to a point where it felt like something he would do.
The film’s score is a nice mix of different styles. That said, each track that is played fits the different environments rather well. Jackman’s score also captures the the atmosphere, and it stands out. Skrillex, Owl City, and AKB48’s contributions are also nice. Buckner and Garcia also contribute to a nice little track during the end credits. The only track that I could of done without was Shut Up And Drive. It’ll probably feel a bit too outdated within the next few years or so. It also feels like a bit of a distraction.
The moral of the story is a nice little bonus. That you have to accept yourself, flaws and all. No matter if you were born to be the bad guy or have glitches, because you never know if those flaws end up being your strengths.
For everything the film does right, there are some flaws with the film.
First, I could of done without Vanellope’s gratuitous toilet humor. Yeah, “Heroes Dooty” is one thing, but the writers tend to overuse this kind of humor. Thankfully, this type of humor is toned down during the film’s third act with some more somber moments.
The story tends to become a bit too familiar at times. Thankfully, the film’s screenplay brushes over it for the most part.
That being said, Wreck-It Ralph is a film that you need to check out. It continues the rebirth of Walt Disney Animation Studios. You don’t need to be into gaming to love this film. Don’t miss out on the Blu-Ray release next month. A
^Out of curiosity Ballboi, are you rooting for Brave or WIR for Best Animated Picture?
I’m rooting for Ralph, but I wouldn’t mind if Brave or ParaNorman won.
This was one of the “exceeded my expectations” part of my experience of the movie. I really thought she would be an annoying sidekick, so it truly surprised me how empathethic she turned out to be. Unlike many “annoying sidekick” characters, she actually has a reason to be so caustic and plucky, in the face of [spoil]all the bullying and discrimination she receives on a daily basis.[/spoil]
I can thank this film for teaching the meaning of “A la mode”!
I also felt that this was the odd one out in the soundtrack because it feels so mainstream-contemporary. I think it’s also because I’ve seen it used in countless Pixar Cars and car-movie fan music videos.
This is contrary to a lot of films’ morals about believing in oneself, you can change who you are, everyone can be a hero, etc. I find the “fatalism” refreshing, not because it is cynical or defeatist, but because one’s self-acceptance can be liberating and even empowering. By being at peace with one’s true nature, one can then work on changing the world through one’s strength, be it for better or for worse. Throughout the movie, Ralph ends up breaking a lot of things, whether on purpose or by accident. But at the climax, his one “weakness” [spoil]ends up being the very power needed to save Sugar Rush and the arcade.[/spoil]
I also like the message that we should always see the good in others and be more accepting of reformed baddies who want to change. I’ve read stories of former criminals and convicts who end up doing good for their community upon their release from prison - the 70s song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” springs to mind. It was Ralph and Vannelope’s belief in each other that made all the difference in the world, whether the [spoil]former gets a medal or the latter gets to be princess of her kingdom.[/spoil]
Ralph’s line of nearly [spoil]“soiling his pants”[/spoil] when he first meets Vanellope made me wonder if videogame characters use the bathroom. Or if there are toilets in the game world (We see a storage room behind Tapper’s, but I can’t remember if there were toilets).
I thought the story was pretty original - it moved at a brisk enough pace to keep me guessing what was going to happen next, and some of the twists caught me by surprise. It’s also interesting how they revealed the “rules” of the world slowly, so that as the viewer gets deeper into the film, they learn something new which enriches the story ([spoil]like Sonic’s PSA, Vanellope revealing she can’t leave her world, King Candy swimming in the game code, etc[/spoil]) - the proverbial plot thickening.
Yes, the huge gist of it is very much Joseph Campbell-like, but what movie isn’t these days? I thought it was quite unpredictable for the most part, which is what you mentioned with regrads to the screenplay.
March 5 can’t come soon enough!
I’d have to see ParaNorman and Frankenweenie, two animated films I missed in cinemas. But of Hotel Transylvannia, Brave and WIR, Ralphie is the best by a long shot.
Saw this a few days ago. It suprised me actually, because I didnt think it was going to be as good as it was (if that makes sense? )
I thought it started off slowly, but it got more interesting after the first 20 mins or so. I was also suprised how likeable Vanellope was, and i didnt think she was going to be a major character (Disneys trailers not doing their films justice, yet again!.. )
also loved the climax and ‘twist’ at the end!
I concur with everything you said, lazerenvy! I went through a similar experience with my first viewing!
Congratulations to Ralphie at the Annie Awards, where it won Best Animated Feature and gongs for director Rich Moore, voice actor Alan Tudyk (King Candy!), music and screenplay. Looks like Dreamworks didn’t sweep the awards like last time.
Let’s hope you get a medal at the Oscars!
Oh, nothing! I was just being silly. I meant like for “Pete’s sake” or “the love of Pete”, but since this is a Pixar thread…it happened.
I love that Alan Tudyk won an Annie for voicing King Candy! He deserves it. At this point, I don’t care if Brave, Wreck-It Ralph, or one of the other films wins especially since I love Brave and WIR the same. However, if this movie were to win, I would be particularly thrilled mostly because of how uniquely awesome this film turned out to be.
“Let the games begin!” - Elinor (Brave)
