Your opinions on Disney's arguable "Dork Age" films

Apparently Robin Hood, Pochahontas and Home on the Range all have a 60% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes on Top Critics. Good for them.
Although, The Black Caulrdon among Top Critics has a 20%. The same score for Tom and Jerry The Movie.

The quality of those movies is very different. To have the same score isn’t fair.

Those are the cases where I lost the faith on the Tomatometer.

I trust Rotten Tomatoes most of the time. But lately at times they have been a bit “off”.

Robin hood and Pocahontas are lesser in terms of Disney films, but they’re both much better than Home on the Range.

Wait, is this supposed to be “dork age,” or “dark age?”

The era(s) we are talking about are kind of both.

“Dork” is a trope. It was explained a couple of pages back.

Anyone notice how the year Pixar released its first film was also the year when Pochahontas came out and started (for some) Disney’s downward spiral?
CONSPIRACY!

Now that you mention it, it feels kind of odd since many people believe that Pixar is the best animated studio today. I believe Pocahontas was when the Renaissance started to go downhill.

The Aristocats - This is more like a retreading of 101 Dalmatians but with much more padding and less of a flow. The film’s highlight is the “Everybody Wants to Be A Cat” song, but otherwise it’s predictable, unmemorable fair. 2.5 out of 5.

Robin Hood - Liked the idea of an all-star animal cast, but disappointed in the execution. IMO, could have been much better. Liked it as a kid, not so much now. 2.5 out of 5.

The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh - Timeless for anyone young and old. 5 out of 5.

The Rescuers - Kinda mediocre, although the climactic retrieval of the Devil’s Eye in the pirates’ cove does boost it somewhat. Otherwise I think Rescuers Down Under is much better. 3 out of 5.

The Fox And The Hound - Gorgeously animated and with a surprisingly mature, dark storyline. The concept of friendships changing and racism are very well portrayed. Slow and padding at times, but otherwise very enjoyable. Highlight: the bear fight at the end of the film. 4 out of 5.

The Black Cauldron - Yes, I agree it is a flawed film — the storyline has a lot of missing links and I personally felt that Taran’s comrades should have had more room to breathe — but I still give it a solid recommendation for the following reasons. 1) It’s unusually dark and frightening for a Disney film (particularly the skeleton army at the end). 2) It’s got an awesome (but underused) villain—The Horned King. 3) It attempts to be something different from Disney’s usual formula. 4) The music by Elmer Bernstein. All of this make the film an interesting and overall enjoyable experience in spite of its failings. 4 out of 5.

The Great Mouse Detective - Very entertaining. Ratigan is the triumph of the show, as is the climactic Big Ben chase. The rest of the film is a tightly plotted, clever, funny, and constantly intriguing tale. It’s a shame Disney rarely makes movies like this anymore. 4 out of 5.

Oliver and Company - OK, I admit it — the animation is kinda primitive and the storyline is predictable, but I do like the characters, the songs (Billy Joel’s number especially), the villain (Sykes doesn’t have much screentime but he’s menacing nonetheless), and the climactic train chase at the end. 3.5 out of 5.

Fantasia 2000 - No match for the original in any way, but still contains some fabulous animated sequences — particularly “Rhapsody in Blue”, “Pines of Rome”, “Pomp and Circumstance”, and the “Firebird Suite”. Only drawbacks: somewhat disappointing presentation of “Beethoven’s Fifth”, not enough “Carnival of the Animals”, and the mediocre transitions between the shorts. Otherwise very good. 4 out of 5.

Dinosaur - Spectacular visuals and music, and overall fitting dark mood, but not enough story and bland characters. 3 out of 5.

The Emperor’s New Groove - Liked it at one point, but now find it pretty forgettable and mediocre. 2.5 out of 5.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire - Kind of like The Black Cauldron; an ambitious and interesting attempt to do something different from the usual Disney formula, just lacking in the character and story department. Otherwise underrated. 4 out of 5.

Lilo & Stitch - Probably the last great Disney film before The Princess and the Frog. 5 out of 5.

Treasure Planet - Spectacular visuals, dull storyline and characters. 2 out of 5.

Brother Bear - So-so storyline and distracting songs mar this otherwise passable feature. 2 out of 5.

Home On The Range - Worst. Disney. Animated. Film. Ever. I didn’t even want to see it again. 0 out of 5.

Chicken Little - I didn’t even bother seeing this.

Meet The Robinsons - Saw it once, but I remember liking it, although not as much to want to see it again. 3 out of 5.

Aristocats - Edgar’s the lamest Disney villain ever, but still not that bad.

Robin Hood - Okay, but the heavy tracing is bothersome

Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh - Compilation of the old shorts, but that doesn’t really hinder it. Tigger being narrated down is one of my favorite Disney scenes.

Rescuers - Down Under was better. Also can’t help but wonder what if they went with the “Cruella as the villain” idea.

Fox and the Hound - A classic. Bear scene is terrifying

Black Cauldron - Suffers from a schizophrenic tone resulting from the executive meddling, but still an interesting one to watch. Horned King is a fantastic villain and I like it when Disney pushes its usual comfort zone, but at the same time there’s the sugary treatment of Gurgi and the Fair Folk. Would have been nice if they could find a better balance and use the book’s Prince Gwydion as a mentor character.

Great Mouse Detective - The turning point. Why is this considered the Dork Age again when it’s the real start of the Renaissance? Also, I wish Vincent Price had done Disney work sooner, Ratigan is fantastic.

Oliver and Company - Same points as Great Mouse Detective, though I think Detective is better. Sykes is a great sadistic villain, but he isn’t too memorable.

Fantasia 2000 - Bull. This is more like the last movie of the renaissance, seeing as all the segments were produced in all the downtimes between the 90s movies. Also, I see the Fantasias as one collective film.

Dinosaur - Really liked it a lot when I was younger. Still do, but can’t stand the lemurs, but the music, visuals and epic tone are great.

Emperor’s New Groove- Funniest Disney movie ever. And it basically introduced the world to Patrick Warburton.

Atlantis the Lost Empire - One of my favorite Disney movies. Great characters, fantastic Mignola production design, incredible detail put into developing it’s world, and I loved to see Disney trying out Sci-Fi. Makes me wish it did better, could have been a great geeky franchise for Disney and maybe we’d see people speaking Atlantean at D23 or something like Star Trek’s Klingon nuts.

Lilo and Stitch - Another of my favorites. Great story, characters and style. Going off of Atlantis, it’s again great to see Disney doing Sci-Fi stuff.

Treasure Planet - Didn’t like it much as a kid buying into the negative reviews, but it really grew on me as I got older. Some fine character interactions and I really like its Space Sailing Ships aesthetic. Could have been another interesting Sci-Fi franchise if Eisner didn’t set it up to take a dive. However, BEN is the most obnoxious Disney sidekick ever

Brother Bear - Beautiful movie, some nice music, and the aspect ratio shift is so cool but real subtle. Didn’t mind Rutt and Tuke, though I can see why a few people didn’t care for them. Movie’s worth watching for the Transformation scene alone I think.

Home on the Range - The nadir of the Animated Canon. Villains, Thunder Mountain inspired climax and music aside, it’s pretty bad. Hated Rosanne Barr, hated this movie even more when finding out it could have been more of a Western Ghost Story, hated how Brother Bear was finished last but released first so this would end up being a really bad way for 2D to briefly go out.

Chicken Little - Trying too hard to be Dreamworks. Moving on

Meet the Robinsons - Another one for the favorites pile. I see this as the current phase’s counterpart to Great Mouse Detective: a great lead-in to brighter days and to Keep Moving Forward. Nice emotional story, fun characters though the film’s time limit doesn’t give them much to do, and I love the optimistic future set up. Could have really benefitted from a TV show follow-up like the other Disney Sci-Fi stuff. Video game was a good expansion of the world and I can see further stuff working out good too.
Seriously underrated like the other Sci-Fi entries to the canon (except Chicken Little).

What do you think of the films?

cracks hands

Aristocats- Some of the songs are alright, but to me this is the film that is proof that Walt was gone from the company. Parts of it were very predictable, at least we know where the influence came from for the animated feature The Illusionist.

Robin Hood- Its just reused stock footage from previous Disney projects. Not to mention I can think of any other studio to do a better take on Robin Hood. Its no wonder why nearly everyone(except for Frank and Ollie) hated working on this movie.

Many adventures of Winnie the Pooh- Brilliant movie. A good film for the families.

Rescuers- I haven’t seen it. Nor do I plan on seeing it.

Black Cauldron- I think Disney wasted the chance on this one. They should have done what they originally intended to do with this and made it for the older audience. Getting rid of the footage was a complete mistake. I think that would have been great to see Disney do films that were “outside” on what they usually do. If they went ahead with the PG13 take of the cauldron, I’d imagined that people would be both shocked and surprised by it. I dislike this one.

Fox and The hound- Not my cup of tea. I was never interested in it as a kid.

Great Mouse Detective- I love this film. Henry Mancini’s score and Vincent Price make this movie great.

Fantasia 2000- I think this was alright. It wasn’t perfect. The sequence I enjoyed the most was Rhapsody in blue. The thing that I disliked about the film were the cameos of celebrities. Couldn’t they have at least got animators from different places(like people like Don Bluth or even Chuck jones) to introduce the introductions to the seqgments? At least Eric Goldberg got a cameo though.

Dinosaur- Its just The Land before time done in CG. Thats that.

Emperor’s new groove- I remember liking this for feeling like a Warner bros cartoon. But its been too long since I saw this movie. I remember not liking Kuzco in the beginning.

Atlantis- Like New groove, its been too long since I last watched this movie.

Lilo and Stitch- Amazing movie. I would love to see Sanders do another hand-drawn animated feature.

Brother Bear- Wasn’t interested in seeing it.

Home on the range- WORST animated film ever. I remember leaving the theater demanding my money back(if anyone asks why, I was with a relative who was taking their snobby brat with them). I was forced to see this. I couldn’t bare another minute of it. Am I the only one who thought the horse looked like the one from Dreamworks Spirit only with Kuzco’s face?

Chicken Little- I am thankful to god I never saw this. This just looked like Disney was trying too hard to go agaisnt with Dreamworks animation.

Meet the robinsons- Its an okay movie. Its nothing to write home about. It just felt like the average CG stuff at the time. Felt like it was crossing the line of Dreamworks but it doesn’t go across that line. Either way, I will admit some of the future technology in this looked pretty cool to look at.

I’ve deleted my list because I realized how pointless it was and I seemed rather harsh on some films that I had always liked before, and I didn’t like that, so I’ve just removed my list.

The Aristocats: I saw it once when I was really little and started watching the Blu Ray a few months back but had to stop part way through because I was called in to work.
Robin Hood: Haven’t seen it in forever, so I can’t remember much of it at all.
The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh: Haven’t seen it at all!
The Rescuers: The music is fantastic and so is Medusa. I actually prefer Down Under though.
The Fox And The Hound: Pretty sad movie, but probably my least favourite out of this first ‘block’ of films.
The Black Cauldron: Haven’t seen it yet.
The Great Mouse Detective: I really liked this one, it was a fun twist on Sherlock Holmes.
Oliver and Company: Haven’t seen it either!

Fantasia 2000: A really underrated film, I actually prefer this one to the original Fantasia. The stories might not have been as risky or the animation techniques as groundbreaking, but they are both still very strong. Firebird Symphony had me in Bambi-level tears the first time I saw it. Still desperately waiting for confirmation of Fantasia 3!
Dinosaur: I saw it in the cinemas when it first came out but I was 6 at the time so I don’t remember it very well at all. I bought the Blu Ray the other day so I’ll probably watch it again soon.
The Emperor’s New Groove: Also underrated, it really sets the tone for the next few years of Disney films.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Love love love this movie, can’t wait for the Blu Ray release next month!
Lilo & Stitch: Also great, one of my favourite films when I was younger.
Treasure Planet: Extremely underrated also, the visuals are fantastic and it was a good little spin on Treasure Island.
Brother Bear: Haven’t seen it in forever, waiting for the Blu Ray release alongside Atlantis!
Home On The Range: Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. The animation was a bit meh but it had a solid plot and a memorable villain.
Chicken Little: I’ve been putting off rewatching this because I remember sort of liking it when I saw it in cinemas and don’t want to destroy my poor childhood.
Meet The Robinsons: I don’t like how MtR and Bolt are lumped in with Chicken Little as the ‘worst’ Disney films ever made. Bolt was fantastic and Robinsons was definitely another turning point for Disney. The ‘twist’ about who the villain is was painfully obvious though.

Hurr hurr. Dork.

The Aristocats --Under rated!!!
Robin Hood–Can’t remember a good bit of it, but I can’t stand that much copied animation! References, borrowed bits, okay. But this whole movie was a copy mostly.
The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh-Who doesn’t love it?
The Rescuers-BORING
The Fox And The Hound–Very sad. I like it a lot
The Black Cauldron-I really like this movie
The Great Mouse Detective-I love this one. It’s really clever and I love Ratigan
Oliver and Company–Also under rated. I love Jenny and Oliver, and Dodger!!

Fantasia 2000-quite pathetic compared to Fantasia, and I hate the introductions.
Dinosaur-Waste of film. So boring, bland characters, and meh graphics
The Emperor’s New Groove-So under rated!! All the characters are hilarious, and a surprisingly sweet story.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire-----OMG the word underrated was made at this movie’s release. I love the characters, I love the design, and my favorite scene is when Kida com es back out from the crystal and she and Milo hug.
Lilo & Stitch-I’m so glad this movie is well loved. I don’t know why it didn’t fail like every surrounding Disney movie, but it is so moving to me and makes me cry sometimes.
Nani and Lilo are the most relatable and sweet Disney family.
Treasure Planet- SOOOO good. I promise, I’m almost done saying underrated. Underrated!! I love the characters and their relationships, two things that make movies, including this one, great. I do not understand why people don’t like this one. I’m baffled.
Brother Bear-I like the brothers, and some animation is stunning!! I don’t love it, but it’s alright.
Home On The Range–Ugh. Nobody likes this movie, and yet, it still seems over rated to me. PRobably because I have to hear about it. Gross. ONLY good thing was Randy Quaid’s yodeling sequences.
Chicken Little-Same, only this one has no good things.
Meet The Robinsons+Bolt-I group these because they are so sweet and cute! They do not deserve to even be in this “Dork age” title.

Seriously, I can’t find anything false about your list, Virginia, at least in my opinion. If you like The Black Cauldron and Atlantis: The Lost Empire, then I have to see them for sure at some point! And I totally agree about Meet the Robinsons and Bolt, I think they belong in the era of John Lasseter’s reigning at Disney. I even like them more than The Princess and the Frog, which is also a good movie but my least favorite of this new era so far.

Thanks, LQ!! I will say, as a disclaimer, most people hate Black Cauldron. I won’t guarantee it’s your cup of tea. I like Taran and Eilowny a lot, and I always watched it with my dad when I was a little tater tot, so it’s special to me. And the horned king is a bad a$$. Just sayin’. As for Atlantis, as long as you like humor, graphics and action, I’m certain you’ll love it. And PatF is definitely my least favorite Disney movie since Chicken Little. I loooove Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt is pretty good. Both, dare I say it, underrated.
