79th Annual Academy Awards

I am so glad that Happy Feet won. I dont think that

the “Green Oscars” had anything to do with it winning though.
I think the main reason that Cars

didnt win was the fact that is was too American. And eventhough I liked Cars, I couldnt totally relate to it.

Happy Feet, however, was more universal. Australian movie, American voice actors, set in Antarctica (whose

territories are held by 7 countries) rather than American movie with American voice actors set in

America.

Also, Happy Feet is Aussie, so its natural that I would be supporting it. And George Miller has

been deserving of an Oscar since Babe, so I am really happy.

Furthermore- on the empty cup comment, yes,

it would have been an empty cup for Pixar because Pixar already has aclaim and animation cred- but for Animal

Logic, the Oscar is going to open up a million doors for not only the Australian Animation industry, but the

Australian Film industry in general! So what would have been an empty cup to Pixar, will be a full cup to Animal

Logic.

Elastigirl - First of all:

Welcome to Pixar Planet, miss!

Secondly:

Finally, someone who supports what I’m saying here! Yes, indeed,

Happy Feet was certainly diverse in its message, actors, and even location. It was

just something…different. Dancing penguins; who knew? But it worked, and it worked really well and to an extent

that didn’t go beyond boundaries. It pushed its message a bit, sure, but it was effective, clean-cut, and

beautifully portrayed. Yes, there were several plot points, but they weren’t all pushed in your face at one

time, which is another thing I liked about that film.

Cars was another

wonderfully portrayed and fantastically crafted piece. I often wish that it was possible for more than one

nominee in a specific category to win the award, but oh well. Cars got lots of

praise, many claps from the audience, and a big cheer from us Pixar fans, and that – to me – is saying

something special in itself.

Elastigirl: Personally, I think Cars didn’t win, maybe

because it wasn’t their best film that it could have been. Comparing it to Finding Nemo and the Incredibles, it

just probably doesn’t exceed the audiences expectations.

Cars was good

visually, but there was no deeper meaning- it was shallow and [fairly] predictable. And like you say SS, Nemo and

the Incredis were far far better, in story line and in the overall meaning. When I left Cars, I thought it was a

good movie, but it didnt make me feel any different- Happy Feet made you (even if it did force it in your face)

think about the Earth and humanitys treatment of not only animals but the planet as a whole.

Cars didnt

deserve it.

Personally, I have never seen happy feet, but from what I hear from the Oscars, and a lot of my friends, it is

actually quite enjoyable. And the lessons and themes in Happy Feet are incredibly powerful, sorta speak. But

again, those are from others.

Why havent more people actively gone out to see Happy Feet? I dont understand.

elastigirl - sorry, but i absolutely fail to see the

“shallowness” in CARS. o.k., it was quite predictable (at least sometimes), but CARS is one of the much

quiter pixar films. it’s definitely NOT got that “crahs boom bang” attitude that is true for the

“incredibles” or other pixar movies. the “cup” theory perfectly expresses this somewhat

“new” attitude (thanks, GLP ).

i think, CARS didn’t win because of that. because people, so

shortly after the “incredibles”, expected a much louder, weirder show, and what they got (i.e. CARS)

was something to touch their softer emotions. they just didn’t expect it to go that way.

I

don’t mean to offend you or any other fans of Happy Feet, but a friend of mine over

at deviantART said she lacked interest in it because it looks like “another gimmicky animal CG flick”.

I’m afraid I have to agree with her, although I will see it eventually. In my

opinion, it will probably be cute, but not great.

On another note, I can understand how

Cars has more appeal to Americans. Still, we have a lot of members here from around

the globe who love the film, like stickers from Germany.

~~=oP

ahh -

forgot that one.

…and for many, many people, cars unfurtunately aren’t

cute (i still really cannot understand these weirdos).
penguins, on the other

side… (with big eyes and fur / feathers, it is very easy to walk straight into the audience’s hearts)

And me from New Zealand! …Though, I’m not

sure if that counts, because we NZers aren’t too different. But yeah, you know that

I mean.

I agree, Stickers. Have you ever noticed that most films with animals

(animated or not) as the main characters get high ratings? Especially if they’re furry and stuff…

O_O

Happy Feet wasnt all

that cutesy, actually. Mumble was only the cute little baby penguin you see in the trailer for about half an

hour- the rest of the time he is an adult.

I felt Cars was shallow because the story was so

simplistic. I mean its the old cliche, stuck up boy meets down to earth girl, falls in love and changes- how many

times has it been done before? Nothing is added.

I dunno, Smart fortwos are pretty cute to me

Then Mater might make a good penguin

then, dressed up as a penguin for Halloween. I mean he rolled his tires right off the screen and into my heart.

 And his rust shines like the sun, his green eyes like stars .

Elastigirl- I haven’t seen Happy Feet because it looked

boring and unoriginal. Also, the way the characters moved (in the ads, at least) didn’t seem natural, and they

looked kinda…soul-less. Just didn’t appeal to me.

in my humble opinion, it’s not only a “problem” of cuteness, there are some other factors to be

taken into consideration.

in germany, for example, people just didn’t expect PIXAr to make a movie like

CARS. there is a saying about “drawers” in germany, which means putting people into drawers is

something like sorting them out and labelling them according to their actions.
after the

“incredibles”, PIXAR obviosly got into the "action movie with lots of noise and

spectacular effects" drawer. and then came CARS (with its complicated layers of emotions,

communication and personality) - and it was so incredibly different…! people just weren’t prepared for that.

it’s a funny thing that nearly all those german newspapers with a “feuilleton” section (i. e. the

intellectual part of a german newspaper) wrote mostly positive (not to say enthusiastic) stuff about CARS,

whereas the mass media and movie portals pointed out that CARS would be PIXARS weakest movie for so

long.

as i see this, the “drawer” theory works. and i’d not be suprised if it worked not only

in germany, but also elswhere…

I feel so

smart making that comment about the cup thing . I just thought , wow , you think we would all take this a bit

better , since we are all supporting a movie that’s lesson is pretty much ’ winning isn’t everything ’ . Wow

, I guess we were to bust either laughing at tractors , begging for a lightning/sally kiss , and focusing on

awesome eye candy .

GLP - i perfectly know you’re right. we shouldn’t take this so serious, and your “cup” theory is

straight to the point.

but please, this is a matter of the heart, not of the brain…
just let me

indulge a little bit more in self-pity…

I still think Cars should have won  .But everyone is entitled to their own opinon.

me, too! it’s a pity CARS didn’t win.
but you’re right, it’s a

matter of personal choice and likings…

SOB

Cheer up guys. THere are plenty of more awards out there

for Cars to win.

Yes – I agree with

The Star Swordsman. A few losses this year for Pixar is nothing to complain about,

especially since Ratatouille and WALL-E both sound like

promising future winners. Anything is possible, but I’m pretty sure that the studio will nab an award next year

for their hard work on a few whiskers…
