Academy Awards 2012

Same here. I don’t care which studio. But it would be a great honor for animation.

So what movies are you guys hoping takes home the gold?

Probably The Artist. I wonder what other movies will be nominated for Best Picture. My guesses: The Artist, The Descendants, Hugo, The Help, Midnight in Paris, The Tree of Life, War Horse, Moneyball, The Ides of March, and maybe a wild card like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 or Bridesmaids. Maybe this year would have been more suited for only 5 Best Picture nominations, sadly.

And it can still be the case.

Remember there won’t be 10 mandatory nominations anymore.

How do they determine whether there are 5 or 10 slots?

These are my predictions for Oscar winners (nothing too crazy at all):
Best Picture - The Artist
Best Director - Michael Hazanavicius for The Artist
Best Actor - George Clooney for The Descendants
Best Actress - Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady
Best Supporting Actor - Kenneth Branagh or Christopher Plummer
Best Supporting Actress - Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs
Best Original Screenplay - Midnight in Paris
Best Adapted Screenplay - The Descendants
Best Animated Feature - Rango

The process is the same, but only those films that get at least 5% of the total votes will be nominated.

Best Picure- The Help
Best Animated Feature- Either Kung Fu Panda 2 or Rango
Best Visual Effects- Transformers 3 or Harry Potter
Best Sound Effects- Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol or Transformers 3

I’m pulling for either The Artist or Hugo to win Best Picture.

Same

Good choices! Me too, actually. I would be pleasantly surprised to see the latter win.

Thanks! I haven’t seen those yet but I hear there supposed to be great films.

Same here, I do want to see Hugo. Looks good to me.

I believe that The Artist or War Horse will win Best Picture, but Hugo will probably get several nominations.

The long list for Best Score came out a few days ago i think. I would really, really love for Thomas Newman to win for The Help or The Iron Lady and be like 11 times lucky, although he’ll have to face some very tough competition from Trent Reznor and John Williams. Williams will probably get a nod for War Horse, and possibly Tintin, and maybe both.

Best actor, I want Gary Oldman to win for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but I believe George Clooney will win. Best actress I think will be either Viola Davis or Meryl Streep for The Help and The Iron Lady respectively, but i’d be pleasantly surprised if Tilda Swinton won for We Need To Talk About Kevin.

I believe that Best Director will go to either Payne or Scorsese, with Spielberg thrown into the mix.

I think 50/50 or The Artist may pick up Original Screenplay, whilst War Horse will probably get Adapted Screenplay, although because it seems like half the films this past year have been adaptations, there’s going to be a lot of scraps over that one!

I’d like Chico and Rita to win Foreign Language Film but because it’s animated it’s looking rather unlikely, so i’ll go for Miss Bala.

Best song I have no idea. Probably something from The Muppets, which hasn’t even come out here yet

As it stands, I think Rango will win Best Animated Feature, but I wouldn’t be surprised if The Adventures of Tintin wins it, although it will open a huuuuuge can of worms over the mocap banning…

As for technical categories, documentaries and shorts, I have no clue. It’s not that I don’t acknowledge them, far from it, but I have little to no knowledge on that aspect. As for docs and shorts, I don’t watch enough to make a balanced prediction.

So these are my predictions as of 11th January

I’m pulling for Rango to win Best Animated film. It was very upbeat and a good alternative to Pixar’s films. I hope nothing mo-cap wins that award since I don’t consider mo-cap to be animation. It’s basically digaltized actors.

I don’y want Cars 2 to lose just because their were better animated films this year. But I think Pizar winnint year after year will get boring. They have won most of the Best Animated Awards they have lost lost since I think Cars. How many has Disney won? I think over studios should have a chance while Pixar just wins awards not as much.

I think it’s time that the academy made a choice on whether mocap is live action makeup or digitalised animation and then stick to it, instead of simply not bothering to nominate mocap performances at all, which imo, in the case of Tintin aswell as Andy Serkis’s work in general, is a massive shame.

In my opinion, motion capture is animation, just another way of doing it.

It’s like saying stop-motion isn’t animation. Or CGI, for that matter…

I think we can’t be purists in that respect. There are many ways of achieving a film. What really matters is the final product, I think.

I agree ^^.

Who you guys see winning Best Actor/Best Actress?

I’m pulling for Viola Davis to win best actress. As for Best Animated, like everybody has said I think Rango has a high chance of winning. But I also want Dreamworks or Disney to take home the gold. By the way, have Razzie nominations been announced?
