Why do you think they’re plugging it so much? They’re even shoehorning it into a showing of Monsters Inc. tonight as a commercial-thing for the sequel. If that’s not shilling it, I’m not sure what is.
Well, you believe what you want to believe. But to imply it dosen’t really make sense. I don’t understand because it’s “Cars” all of a sudden it’s about merchindise. Didn’t Toy Story sell a lot too? ![]()
Well, yeah–it did…but Cars is shilling its merch at an annoyingly frequent rate. (Not that I don’t like Cars as much as the next guy, but come on…turntables?). Plus, the fact that Lasseter promised a sequel that was a serious thriller or something in the vein of Royale, but the trailers show none of that kind of bothers me too. Don’t lie, Lasseter. We want the truth. But, yeah–other than those two minor issues, that’s it.
while i don’t think it’s /all/ about the merchandise, i do feel it has a /lot/ to do with it. i mean, let’s just face it right now: cars sells. it sells lots and lots and lots and makes billions upon billions of dollars, something i don’t think even toy story can touch. not with a single film’s merch, anyway. don’t get me wrong, i am assuming that to some extent that this is just about making a film and i cannot even begin to explain how happy it makes me to see pixar doing something that’s just very fun and hopefully not crammed with melodrama.
then again, disney most likely has a lot to do with this sequel, too. just…i pretty much agree with everything sullymike said. i still
pixar like anything, but i’m just a ~littttttle~ bit worried about them, err… selling out?
lol, i’m sorry if this whole post reads like a bunch of rambling nonsense - which tbh it pretty much is - & i am especially sorry if i hurt or offended any other members, just wanted to get some stuff off my chest.
omg, this is totally off-topic and excuse me if i’m reading your post wrong but monsters, inc. is going to be on tonight? UH YES DO WANT. even though i own it but whatever, hahaa.
Yup, and, if you hate the Cars interstitial-things throughout the film, ignore them, as I’ll be doing…
This whole Cars/Cars merchandise debate is tiring, it’s happened so many times on the forums!
There is no doubt that merchandise is important and a factor to Cars 2, however it is not the sole reason, Pixar assures us that Story is King*
I agree with everything you said (I’m getting pretty worn out by the turntables and wallpapers) except the part where you said “in the vein of Royale”. Lasseter didn’t compare Cars 2 to any movie in particular, but he did say it would be a serious spy movie (You probably didn’t mean it literally, but I just wanted to clarify). I certainly hope it will be in the vein of Royale, Solace, or any of the Timothy Dalton Bonds (“Sh! I’m trying to stay in character!”). Betrayal, loss, trust, loyalty, courage, all the grand spy themes.
Because the vibe I’m getting now with the Mater bidet jokes, the henchmen falling into the poop truck, the ‘Materhosen’, is very Austin-Powers/Get Smart-ish. Of course, like many of the Cars fans have reasoned, it could be a case of ‘bad trailer, good movie’. And I certainly hope it is.
As for it being “all about the money”, I have said it before. It is “all about the money.”
You can look in a thread I wrote a while ago or the “Pixar wants your money” entry I wrote on my blog. To be fair, Cars is probably just as merchandised as Toy Story is, if only a little more so. The important thing is if Pixar can tell a great story and ‘earn our money’ doing so, instead of us left feeling cheated.
I know you are, but I’m just agreeing with tdit. She (and myself) are just afraid, though…this is the age of sequels and bad merch, and only Tangled stood out to me in it didn’t hack its merchandise like everyone else did (Sure, it showed a doll commercial a few times, and a series of cool viral videos) but that was it. Story may be king this time, we don’t know.
Exactly. I was being sarcastic with the 'in the vein of Royale". I want them to EARN our money again, not leave us feeling cheated and left with the strange aura of “they stole our money like crooks and robbers”. I don’t want to go to my next Pixar film seeing a dollar sign flash in front of my eyes (hallucinating) instead of a hopping lamp. But, I certainly pray the Cars fans are right and it isn’t a bad movie. Hopefully I don’t have to hallucinate a mob of angry people with torches screaming, “I WANT MY MONEY BACK!”
From what you guys are saying here, TDIT and SullyMike, I feel a very strong urge to post this. To a certain extent, it’s a tad unfair when people actually expect Pixar to churn out great quality movie every single summer that HAS to worth their admission tickets. There’s no leeway for any so-called run-of-the-mill, because if they do, they’re immediately branded ‘thief’ or ‘crook’ (if I understand your points right). Really? No chance for mistake at all? You’d slash Pixar’s reputation right away if you happen to sit through one movie that might not live up to your expectation? And think of them as stealing your money? I mean come on!! Think about all the money that you (or people, in general) spending on junk, rubbish movies (in my opinions, of course). And not from unheard, low-budget studios either. Transformers 2? Shrek 3? Pearl Harbor? A bazillion lame comedies from Will Ferrell and the likes? Do you feel unhappy with the movies? Yes. Do you feel cheated? Maybe. Are you bringing yourself back to the theatre the next chance you have with blockbusters coming from studios that churned out these stupid movies? I bet you do. So what’s the difference here? Why Pixar aren’t allowed to produce one maybe-iffy quality movie without worrying about what the general audience would brand their reputation? Are they really that bad of a victim of their own success?
- Disclaimer: by saying “you” in this post, I don’t really mean to single you guys out, TDIT and SullyMike. More like moviegoers, in general.

Okay. I agree with some of that too, except the reputation thing. Did my argument say anything about slashing reputation? No. We’re not going around whining and screaming about how their future movies are going to suck, holding virtual pitchforks and screaming for a boycott on them because their movie sucked. That’s slashing reputation.

How do we know Lasseter was lying, though? I don’t mean to offend anyone, I just feel like from a couple of previews there’s no way you can tell the content of a movie. I never expected the emotional impact in Up, and people probably had doubts before that movie as well, because the previews didn’t go in depth into the real solid content of the story. That’s what great about Pixar: I’ve never had a movie spoiled by previews, and they save so much of their good stuff for a surprise in the theater. All I’m saying is that yes, we want the truth, but how can we even claim it’s a lie in the first place? Johny knows what he’s talking about. Not trying to step on any toes, that’s just what I think
Pixar Planet
But how do we know it’s bad though? Please give it a chance! They’ve never let us down before. Ever. I don’t understand how after years of exceptional movies they’d throw it all away with one, so I believe that Cars 2 is going to be amazing, or at least entertaining. If anything, it won’t be a run-of-the-mill summer movie. I just don’t understand why people are writing it off a month before it even hits the theaters
To answer this and your first thing: maybe it’s because Lasseter tells us quite clearly that “it’s not a spoof/Austin-Powers ripoff”. Yes, but from what we see now, it is–plus, why would you tell us that anyway? You should have enough confidence that it isn’t. I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, and I’m not BASHING it before it hits theaters. I’m just worried that they’re losing confidence, and showing off the sequel in fear of their first dud. ![]()
Maybe they’re having all these little Mater jokes to bring people into the theaters? If it was too serious little chilluns wouldn’t want to come see it. I don’t know for sure, and it’s not like I’m not nervous for this, but I know that they wouldn’t release a dud. The whole story behind TS2 is amazing, and it’s those same people who are in charge of this that pretty much remade TS2 in nine months. I’m really not trying to argue or anything, that’s not my intention, sorry!
I know it takes some faith, but I trust in them. Especially with Lasseter in charge of the whole production

Well, if you put it that way, my guns are held out. I’ll trust them, this once.
I trust them. Have they let us down before? No. So why should we start believing they will this time? If you believe that the movie will suck then yeah, you probably will think it sucks. If things go wrong and they let us down, then yes, we may have doubt. But until they screw up I have faith. That’s how I look at it.

That’s it. Exactly what I’ve been whining about.
Well, that’s good. As long as you give the movie a chance then that’s all I can ask. I don’t expect everyone to love it. I’m just sick of the amount of hate comments all over the Cars boards (not you, other people) of complaining and putting the movie down when they haven’t even watched it or given it a chance.
