Biggest Animated Film This Summer CARS 2 vs PANDA 2

Like many I’m gonna start my post with “I’m seeing both”. I’m going to admit I’m more excited to see the short in front of Cars 2 than the actual feature film ;x

Cars 2 will make more money.

Kaboom of Doom will gain more critic praise.

Cars was the highest grossing of it’s year (Flushed Away, Happy Feet, Ice Age, Over the Hedge, Open Season, Monster House) while Kung Fu Panda came in second to Wall-E by less than 10mill (and kicked the butts of Horton, Bolt, Despereaux). Cars marketing is already a million times better, but when the Cars 2 trailer came out I was displeased with it, and when I saw the Kung Fu Panda trailer at the midnight premiere of Rango I cheered with the rest of the adult audience. I think Kung Fu Panda has a wider target audience but Cars has such a huge presence with children, like HUGE, and their parents become fans as well.

Kung Fu Panda was generally well received by audience and critics, having no review as brutal as the worst Cars’ and bigger praise than the best of Cars’. Like I said above Kung Fu Panda has a winder target audience, and this is where everyone that’s 9 and up is going to be this summer. Even though a good amount of them will also see Cars 2. The trailer makes it look so much more interesting and based on what I’ve seen of both sequels if I had never seen Cars or Kung Fu Panda and I could only see one sequel this summer it’d be Kung Fu Panda. We know how Cars was really unappreciated by the critics in 06, I think we’re going to see it again this year, even though these are two completely new films. There’s a chance at redemption, but don’t hurt yourself wishing.

I completely agree. Both look good to me, but I think Panda 2 will be a better movie.

people still doubt it, I think that Cars 2 will be better and bigger than Kung Fu Panda 2

Naturally, since this is a Pixar forum, the majority vote will be for Cars 2. I did NOT see that coming! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m actually more curious to find out who were the 9 people who voted for the panda.

While I wish I could see more Panda clips to make a better decision (we still have only two trailers and the official site compared to Cars’ multitude ‘Character-a-day’ revelations and wallpapers and trailers and secret clip and retro posters and official posters which are really only a variation of the first teaser poster), it looks like Cars 2 is the most promising one. For now.

I can’t shake the feelings that KFP2 will merely be an extension of KFP, in that the major theme is the same (e.g. beat the pulp out of the bad guys!!!), and the difference is only the identity of the bad guys/villains. For that reason, I couldn’t really get excited for it. If KFP2 follows this route, I wouldn’t be surprised if somehow Po and the other kung fu masters will inexplicably beat the bad guys in some sorts of mysterious, illogical way when the odds are against them (pinky causing explosions, really? I mean, REALLY???). Which bugs me to no ends.

Whereas for Cars 2, at least we know for sure that the themes and the adventures will be so much different, if not complete opposite of the original. I’ll have no hesitant to go see Cars 2 in theatre when it comes out, while I’ll hold certain reservations against KFP2, and will see if it’s worth it to spend a few hours sitting through something I’ve already been through before (kind of).

I voted for Kung Fu Panda 2. :stuck_out_tongue: And even on a Pixar forum, it’s annoying how everyone assumes KPF 2 will be terrible. :frowning:

GUYS, IS IT BAD THAT I’M LIKE, NOT EXCITED FOR EITHER OF THESE. AT ALL.

asdfghjkl; i don’t even know. honestly, when i heard about cars 2 i was like fdsakjala;NO and when i hurt about kung fu panda 2 i was like, “uhm, well…that’s nice.” i /do/ like the original kfp more than the original cars, but really, i’m really & truly not looking forward to either and i have no. idea. why.

maybe once summer gets here and i don’t have to worry about a million projects & junk i’ll be excited. but for now, just. no.

i guess if i /had/ to vote now i’d vote for kung fu panda 2, just because the trailer for that one looks more promising and i wasn’t a huge fan of the original cars. BUT SINCE I DON’T, i think i’m going to have to wait to vote.

i /am/ loving those retro posters, though.

^That’s understandable. I mean, it is arguable that neither movie needs a sequel.

Just because Cars is getting more votes, doesn’t mean everyone will think it’s terrible. It seems most people on this forum are open to KFP 2, as well as Cars 2.

I don’t think KFP2 will look terrible, I am sure it will have the typical humor of a dreamworks film, audiences around the world will love it because jokes will be, one more time, the hidden successful card for this flick,
I am gonna be watching this one on opening weekend and at least I expect to see a descent story, however I’ve read that some movie websites have stated that Puss looks much better than KFP2,

looking at the latest numbers, it seems that Kung Fu Panda 2 is struggling at the Box Office, such a surprise, gotta see how it performs over Sunday and Monday, if the trend continues, at least Cars 2 would be able to knock out Panda in final grosses

SO I FINALLY VOTED. AFTER LIKE A MONTH.

voted for KFP2 because i’m legit excited to see it (i know it’s already out, but i just don’t have time atm.) & tbh at this point i’m more cautious-curious about cars 2 than excited.

as for which will be /bigger/, it’s tough to call. panda seems to picking picking up at the box office and the original /seems/ to be more loved by critics/moviegoers (CARS FANS DON’T SHOOT ME PLZ), so the sequel was pretty much okay with people, but then again, pixar is pixar. people will go.

We have the numbers for opening weekend for KFP, and will see how it progresses for the next month. I can’t wait to compare these numbers with Cars.

I’m so glad that you voted for the ‘Away’ team, IV. I’m inclined to agree with you, I think I still haven’t voted because I can choose an option.

EJE: As I’ve said many times before, I’m very excited to see the ultimate showdown of the two studios in Australia. A Pixar film and a Dreamworks film released on the same day? I think this is unprecedented. And both in 3D formats (though Cars will also be available in IMAX). Who will win?

^ that is crazy, what are Disney and Dreamworks thinking about???

when is the exact release date TDIT??, June 24??, if so I see dreamworks being mean, because as much as I love Cars, I have to realize that KFP2 will be bigger in overseas markets

that /is/ crazy.

i agree with bryanbmp. KFP2 will most likely do better overseas. as for /domestic/ grosses, it’s hard to call. KFP2 is picking up (which makes me actually really happy tbh), but my prediction is cars 2, but hey, we’ve still got almost a month!

I’m totally going to see Panda 2 in the cinema though… while I will probably see Cars 2 on DVD later. Sorry, Cars fans!

It’s just that a movie about animals (and they even included some of my favourite species!) interests me more than a movie about cars. D:

Looks like Cars 2 is gonna breakout overseas too, Go CARS!!!

Go Cars 2!!!

bryan: In China and Asian territories, maybe KFP will be the victor. But this is in Australia, a cosmopolitan country, which is harder to tell. Besides, I don’t think Dreamworks is being mean on purpose, for all we know, maybe the Disney distributors did it on purpose, or Paramount (which distributes Dreamworks) did it, who knows? Or maybe it’s all just a big pile of coincidence!

No worries, mate… I don’t think Pixar or Dreamworks fans need to feel threatened. Why should we be? I’m sure there’s more than enough of the winter vacation crowd to go around… personally, I’m very excited to see who will be the winner. It’ll be the movie match of the century!
