I still think the trailer is seriously underwhelming in terms of emotional pathos. Sure, it looks great, but to me it’s not as ‘epic’ as I was hoping for. Good trailers like the theatrical for At World’s End, or Wall-E, or Rio have the comedic elements, but you can tell there’s some emotional ‘subtext’ beneath the action. You can deduce this will be the culmination of Jack, Liz and Will’s love triangle, that this is the last chance for a robot to find true love, or a bird will rediscover his roots and his homeland, etc. Here, there is no hint of Po’s internal journey, or anything remotely touching or inspiring. It’s just another ‘save the world’ story, from the trailer’s impression. If anything, the selection of clips and the Black Eyed Peas song would’ve made me thought it a shallow blockbuster if I didn’t know better.
I’m betting if the Japanese released an alternative trailer, it’ll be cut much better (although there’s the possibility they’ll ruin the plot with their propensity for spoilers).
This is just my thoughts on the trailer. I’m sure there’s more in the movie they’re letting on, and that I’ll be more impressed when I see the final product in theatres.
Hey, I was partly kidding. I don’t just praise a movie for having my favorite species in it… It does make it more enjoyable for me to watch of course but eh.
Well I was totally wrong about the peacock being someone who couldn’t fight it seems. Heh. Still I wonder- is he a Kung Fu guy or a master of some other martial art?
But in any case there’s things to like in the new trailer and it looks like fun at least- but I think there were some moments which could eventually be counted as being profound in some way like how they’ll actually have to defeat their enemy.
But… in any case while I still think the trailer is enjoyable for the most part it isn’t yeah completely fantastic, but let’s face it so MANY movies have been suffering a bad case of terrible or unimpressive trailers anyway. This trailer looks actually great compared to say the trailers for Tangled, Megamind etc. I’m beginning to think we can’t trust trailers all that much right now.
I’m still more eager to see this than Cars 2 though (while some of my misgivings about that film are starting to go a little more into the optimistic end- though I still have a few apprehensions all the same).
It’ll be interesting I think to see the furious five (especially Tigress) and Po interact in some ways.
I mean to say is while Po is the dragon warrior, he’s just not really prime leader material, yet anyway- so what if he’s placed it that role for this mission? (Granted this is just speculation here but it seems Po is mostly being addressed here).
They could choose some better music though on top of it all too. Oh Dreamworks why must you be so pop song sometimes?
I’m concerned by the amount of progress they’ve made, 3 months isn’t a lot of time if you’re gonna do animation and post-production, and to hear that a lot of scenes are still in the storyboard mode (at least, from what they’ve shown the two blokes) is certainly worrying. It also concerns me that much of the appeal of Po as an underdog from the first movie is lost in the second- I mentioned in an earlier post that his cockiness and overconfidence from the trailers are starting to alienate me.
Still, I’m excited by their statement of the “action of the first movie times ten”, and, of course, why Po’s father is a goose!
I’m very surprised to hear the good news about Puss. They mentioned Roger Deakins (who some of you may know did the cinematography for Wall-E and Rango), but I’m not sure whether he’s involved with KFP2, Puss, or both.
Of course, it pleases me to hear Guillermo is doing Puss and Guardians (he was a visual consultant for Megamind last year), and I’m curious to find out what character he’s voicing in Puss! And the mention of “Sergio Leone” as the inspiration for Puss certainly piqued my interest.
It really is quite remarkable that only a few years ago, Dreamworks was looked down upon as the ‘lesser sibling’ of Pixar, and now there’s this huge exodus of talent: Chris Sanders, Roger Deakins, Guillermo Del Toro, Carter Goodrich (a concept artist for Ratatouille)… Dreamworks may not beat Pixar yet, but it certainly is on par with it this year.
Well, from the theatrical trailer, there’s a shot of him shooting daggers from his tail. So we can assume he’s a pretty bad-*ss at hand-to-hand combat (or should that be talon-to-talon combat?).
i’m actually reallllly starting to look forward to this movie. kinda. sort of. maybe. I NEED SOMETHING TO BE EXCITED ABOUT THIS SUMMER OKAY. & to be perfectly honest, as much as i’m not like, “fjdksa;;a omg omg omg yes yes yes,” over this film, i’m still more excited for it than cars 2.
I’m not terribly impressed by the first theatrical trailer- couldn’t they have used a cooler instrumental background music piece than some silly Black Eyed Peas cover of an old song?
I’m hoping they release a second trailer before May’s release in the US (It’ll be out on the same day as Cars 2 here Down Under), but even though I’ve seen more Cars 2 footage, I’m still more excited for KFP2. I just hope it’s not a repeat of the previous show’s story arc and that they really take the franchise in a new direction with this one.
I’m praying that Lord Peacock will be a formidable villain like Rattlesnake Jake from Rango and not Nigel the cockatoo from Rio (although the latter was pretty funny). And that we will see Po and Tigress’ relationship develop somehow, there’s really hints of that in the trailer and I’m wondering whether this is gonna mean something.
Fans might want to check out this CNN clip from Icon that gives a behind-the-scenes look into the making of KFP2. I’m so happy to finally see and hear the director Jennifer Yuh and (one of my artist idols) the talented Nico Marlet speak!
Keep an eye out for brand new footage of Lord Shen in action, and ignore the creepy bald man with glasses, who comes up with a cringeworthy twist on a Disney quote at the very end.
And a new clip called ‘That was my fist’ has been released, which is an extension of the opening scene in the trailer. I love how [spoil]Crane has to swoop in to keep Po from ending up as panda-pizza on the rocks[/spoil].
Actually it was more in the vein of ‘fake Youtube pages’ like what ‘Fast Five’ did a few weeks ago - youtube.com/universalpicturesau (Unfortunately I can’t see it now, so it may have been removed). Stuff flies out of the screen, the layout gets shattered, the fourth wall gets broken, etc.
Pixar hasn’t attempted anything this sophisticated (or gimmicky) for real-time interactive page elements.
But Pixar’s ‘ChromeLeaks’ tactic is more like The Dark Knight’s famous ARG campaign in that it gets you to pay attention and search for clues, rather than Kung Fu Panda 2’s simple ‘click the link to see the secret video’.
You know how after a golf player hits the ball and all the people around them in the circle clap softly even if they completely screw up or if they get a hole in one those are golf claps…
