Movies - both new and old

I think 3 suffers from too much pop-culture references and felt very contrived.

^^^^

I think the first two has to many pop culture references. One thing I didn’t like about part 3 was the fact that what happened between Puss in Boots and Donkey didn’t led to anything.

The Avengers I’m probably the only person who thinks this but this movie bored me. I actually just got back from watching it and I didn’t stay until the end. I think I made it to about a little over an hour and a half before I left. I think my problem with it is that the heros bored me. I like superheros with major flaws, or interesting flaws, or put in interesting situations and I wasn’t getting that in the movie. My mind started to drift a lot so I left.

Yep. Not to mention the constant references to Disney. I hear that Lord Farquaad’s appearance was inspired by Michael Eisner.

These are, verbatim, my thoughts on Shrek. 8D But I don’t like any of them very much myself.

Saw Conan the Barbarian and Rango. I loved Rango, and Conan was interesting enough.

I saw Chronicle recently and thought it was pretty good, I’d give it a 7-7.5/10.

I saw Little Shop of Horrors (1986) today. I missed the very beginning, but caught the bulk of the movie. I found it pretty entertaining and enjoyable, and the morbid dark humor was actually sort of amusing. About a 7.5/10 for me.

Cars: This may be one of Pixar’s weaker efforts, but I still loved it. The only flaws I had was some of the unoriginality of the story, and maybe the pacing. The characters I felt in this one, apposed to the second one, were all very likable and the visuals looked pretty good. I’ll give this a B-

I always loved this movie as a little kid! I still like it. Fun songs by Menken and Howard.

^Wow, I was actually completely unaware that they did the songs! I like the score a lot though, so I guess that explains it.

I’ll probably have a mini-review of Brave around Monday or Tuesday after I see it.

The film (Little Shop of Horrors) is also directed by Frank Oz, legendary Muppeteer and Yoda’s performer.

There Will Be Blood: 9/10, I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.

The Artist: I definitely think it deserved all it’s oscar’s. It had an enjoyable story, great characters and great direction. 9.9/10.

Moonrise Kingdom: Probably the best movie I’ve seen this year! Really cute and heartfelt, and very funny. Builds up momentum wonderfully to a surprisingly exciting and charming climax. I’m definitely a fan of Wes Anderson’s style, and this was another great success from him.

^I haven’t heard of that until today, but you’ve made me interested. I enjoy Wes’s style from what I’ve seen of his films.

I’ve been debating about if I should see Moonrise Kingdom. It sounds good to me but the first and only Wes Anderson movie I’ve seen was Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was boring to me.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Pretty average. It was pretty disappointing, because although there was nothing particularly bad about it, it just felt very by-the-numbers. I guess The Avengers kind of spoiled me when it comes to superhero movies.

The Jungle Book: It’s a very entertaining Disney film but it isn’t that strong in terms of the story. A-

The Amazing Spiderman

It was good. While I don’t like it as much as the original, it was good. I like how it’s more true to the comics. There is a lot of talking though and not enough fighting and the soundtrack isn’t as good in my opinion. Stan Lee’s cameo was very funny. It’s weird to see Peter more as a juvinile then a nerd. He was smart but he didn’t really show it. I’m wondering who was the man in the [spoil]end credits. Some people are saying Norman others are sating Mystero[/spoil]. Overall, it was good but they can improve it in the next film.

C+

There’s actually two film versions of Little Shop of Horrors. The 1960 black-and-white one by Roger Corman, it also starred Jack Nicholson in one of his earliest roles. Then there’s of course the 1986 musical version by Frank Oz.

I watched some guys do a riff on a slasher film last night called New Years Evil. I has a pretty interesting premise. The host of a New Years Eve music show is called by some psycho who says he will kill a girl every time it turns to the new year in every time zone in the US, and the host will be the last to die. While not particularly gory, there are some classic scenes, such as a guy being chased through a drive-in theater by a gang of bikers, and when a woman is chained to the bottom of an elevator as it goes up and down. There’s also some sub-par metal music played throughout the movie. Overall, it has a very eerie nature to it, especially during kill scenes.

Yep, but they were talking about the one with Menken songs, and that one was directed by Oz.
