Atlantis: It was alright. The story was very filmsy for the most part but an excellent cast of characters keep things afloat. C
The Queen of Versailles It’s about the American Dream turing into a nightmare. David Siegel, who didn’t grow up rich, became a billionaire by building the worlds largest time share company. His wife, Jackie, an engineer graduate and former model, spends her days being the typical wife who’s living in the lap of luxury. They have eight kids and have an army of nannies taking care of things. After deciding they need more room they decide to have a house built. After talking about what they wanted and needed, it ends up being a 90,000 square foot home, which was going to be the biggest home in America, called Versailles, which was inspired by a vacation to France. While filming the documentary, the stock market crash of 2008 happens, ruins David’s business, and Versailles is left unfinished. David tries to get back on his feet while Jackie continues to live life as if nothing has happened without knowing just how bad things are. I went into this movie expecting to not like these people. I was suprised when I realized that in the end I felt a little sympathy towards them.
For me, this summer has not been about the big blockbusters. I’ve seen Brave, Ted, The Avengers and The Amazing Spiderman. Out of those major summer movies, I only enjoyed Spiderman. I’ve also seen The Best Exotic Hotel Marigold, Safety Not Guaranteed, Bernie, The Queen of Versailles and The Intouchables. I enjoyed all of them. As if I needed reminding, big budgets means nothing without a great story. As time goes on, when it comes to new releases, I’m starting to look forward to the small movies more and more.
I still need to see The Dark Knight Rises, Take Thise Waltz and Beasts of the Southern Wild. I’m also thinking about seeing Moonrise Kingdom. But the only other Wes Anderson movie I’ve seen was The Fantastic Mr. Fox and it was boring to me.
It kinda annoy’s me a lot of people hate Indiana Jones 4. While I admit it has a lot of problems, I still like it a lot. Everyone complains about how it has less to di with religion and more on aliens. People also hate the nuke the fridge thing. It’s obious you coulden’t survive it, but you can’t also survive jumping off a plane on a raft. I think it has to do with nostalgia. If it was made shortly after the 3rd movie, it woulden’t be as hated.
I agree with every word in that, Pixarfan, except that I do think the fridge scene was crudely staged, but that is simply constructive criticism towards one of my favourite filmmakers.
Except for small problems, like you said, I think it’s decent entertainment, and critics were way warmer towards it than the audiences.
^^I largely agree with all of the above. I just felt like the ending came out of nowhere. (And there were a couple of other scenes I didn’t like for personal reasons that should be disregarded.) I haven’t seen it in years though.
Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro — One of the early movies Miyazaki worked on! Great action scenes, exceptional animation for the late 70’s and a likable protagonist. I’m not ultra familiar with the Lupin III universe but this is an excellent standalone movie. 8.8/10
The Sword in the Stone: It was pretty good, but I was disappointed. The biggest gripe I had with this film is how it lacks a real plot. It really doesn’t have anything to do with The Sword in the Stone. Other then that, everything just seems minor. Really liked Archimedes and Merlin. C+
I watched American History X last night. I thought it was pretty good, though some scenes were disturbing.
I’m very excited to see Total Recall this weekend, if only because:
-
I liked the Arnie original, although the eyeball-bulging scene was kinda scary.
-
I actually read the Philip K. Dick story both films are based on (It’s pretty though-provoking, with a nice twist at the end).
-
This character from the previous film apparently returns in the remake:
Has anyone seen The Shining? I watched this flick on TCM this morning (I had recorded it on Sky several days ago) and I was really hooked on it all the way through. I thought the ending was a little abrupt though. [spoil]Wendy and Danny get away from Jack[/spoil] but it’s not said what happened to them afterwards. A really good horror film though.
^I haven’t seen that yet, but I so badly want to!
Get it on DVD or record it if you see it on TV. I’d recommend it.
My friends and I tried to watch The Shining, but my Gundam-obsessed chums have a short attention span, so they gave up despite me wanting to continue. ![]()
Also I saw The Bourne Legacy, Brave, Total Recall and The Dark Knight Rises recently. First two last weekend and the last two this.
I’d have to say TDKR is the best of the lot. Magnificent closure to Nolan’s magnum opus, and I must say, Anne Hathaway looks adorable in a French Maid dress! <3
The most recent move I saw was Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. That movie was the bomb! Especially [spoil]the colorful circus scenes[/spoil]!
Oh yeah, JSWeC!
I especially love the Katy Perry number, I saw it in 2D Digital but I can imagine it would be an absolute visual treat to see it in 3D!
I read there’s gonna be A Christmas Story 2. I don’t know why this has to get made. But I actally wanna see it. I wanna know why they had to make a sequel to one of the best Christmas movies ever.
Terri - C: Needs more character development. A lot more. ![]()
Wow, what?
That’s…interesting…
Wanderlust: 2/10, what a load of rubbish. I barely even laughed.
The Hunger Games: I enjoyed it, both times. I think it has an interesting story and I particularly like the Score. I noticed a couple things on second viewing, that I didn’t on the first too.
7/10.
I’m thinking of trying out the Disney Alice & Wonderland or Peter Pan. I’ve never seen either of those yet.
