I’ve been keeping up with the board for a while now and just never registered. Just wanted to say its been really nice seeing other ppl in the same situation i am its kept me sane I applied for the editorial intern and still waiting to hear so fingers crossed good luck to everyone else waiting for 1st contact or news after an interview
Welcome to the forums. Wish you the best of luck. I still haven’t heard anything but at this point ive lost most hope. I just wish I’d hear anything so I could stop wondering.
Perhaps at the time I meant in general. I rather not say how long I’ve been doing this because it’s far too long in my opinion.
When you submitted your resume, did you guys also list your GPA? I never bother listing my GPA even though it’s a 4.0 because I don’t see any reason to.
I hope people aren’t feeling this way. Pixar isn’t the only company in the industry, and animation studios aren’t the only option either…there are game studios, advertising studios, sfx studios… almost every movie has some cg work in it these days, and it’s only growing.
Not to mention that there is nothing wrong with working at a small studio - you get to do more. A guy from Blue Sky just came to my school, and he said that an entry level job at a small studio is in his opinion way more valuable than a job getting coffee at a big studio, because even with that name on your resume it’s hard to climb the ladder that way. (Not saying any of these internships are like that, Pixar actually has a great program - but not every big studio does. Another reason Pixar’s internships are so competitive)
I love 3d and it still surprises me that I can do something I love and people will actually pay me for it… of course Pixar is my dream, I’m enough of a fangirl that I would love to see Andrew Stanton or Pete Doctor or someone wandering around and recognize them - but there are other places I would gladly work as well
FYI, it isn’t like I only applied to Pixar. I don’t have that Pixar or bust mentality. I’ve applied to 5 companies and waiting on another 4 more to apply to once they put up their internships. In total, I applied to about 6 internship positions thus far just for this summer. I’m pretty sure that’s more than most or even all people here.
I’m not attacking you. I was just making a positive statement for everyone’s benefit, trying to keep the nice mentality going here… Sorry if it came across differently. :\
Well here’s something someone at Pixar emailed me a few days ago. This is an edited version since it was more of a personal email. Hopefully it still makes sense…
“Internships are nice (as an extra bonus), but they’re not required to secure a regular full-time job in the industry. I know many people who never did internships that got full-time jobs at studios right out of school. It’s great if you get an internship, but it’s ok without one too. Whatever you do, just keep learning, growing, and developing new work.”
So I just wanted to give some of my own advice and also advice my career advisors told me. Basically my advisor told me to apply to 25-50 companies of all different sizes not just Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, etc. They said follow up after 2-3 weeks. She also said count on only hearing back from 5-10 of them 10 if your lucky. My advice is for those of you who are questioning whether or not this is for you. Answer this question Why do you want to be a Animator, Visual Effects artist, or whatever it is you want for your career? If you struggle for an answer or can’t come up with a good enough answer this might not be for you. It might just be animating or whatever is something fun you like to do in your spare time and there is nothing wrong with that. If you have an answer and its good and you know this is it then don’t give up. Battle through the struggles and it will pay off. One day a door will open up for you. That is all!
I think that advice is pretty much common sense, right? You should also be prepared to answer questions typical to that in interviews. I know I’ve been asked that a few times…
So what 25-50 companies did you apply to? Not trying to get on your bad side or anything, I just want to know because I sure would like to have a list of 25-50 companies to apply to for internships. I do have the public visual effects and animation studios map created by a bunch of people in the SIGGRAPH group, but most of the companies listed don’t have internships. This isn’t the link, but I think it’s a lot better than the one I was thinking about. Enjoy…cgstudiomap.com/index.php
@joro Keep in mind I am only a sophomore. I didn’t apply to that many this year because a lot of internships require you to be a junior going into your senior year or a grad student. So I only applied to a few. But I have a list of over 50 companies to choose from for next year. Since I’m limited to what internships I can apply to I did a lot of research so I would be prepared for Junior year. The big companies you probably already know but I will list 5 medium/ small companies on my list. Keep in mind I’m visual effects!
These are not the companies I applied to btw. I applied to small studios close to my house.
Sorry I didn’t list all 50 it’s too much info to type out.
Also the interview thing you listed is also a good idea. You should be able to talk thoroughly about every piece of art you have done especially the stuff in your demo reel. Hope this helped.
@scadstudent: So you’re from the LA area then? There’s a lot of things going on there. I applied mainly around my area too. Although, my background is in CS which does limit me a bit.
For those who has had interviews, doesn’t have to be from Pixar, what kind of questions were you asked if you don’t mind me asking?
Just wanted to say, no matter where our internships/jobs/applications take us that I really enjoyed that everyone here is so sweet and supportive! It’s really comforting being able to see a bunch of people going through and helping each other through the same things
After waiting for so long I got my rejection which is ok because I still have next year. I enjoyed chatting on this forum during the process and wish all of you the best of luck.
