And I totally made a mistake on my demoreel. But it was a slight editing error ><
Something overlapped for a second and I couldn’t get in touch with them in time to fix it. aslkdf;
I applied for the Editorial internship, hence if there was a slip up in my editing of the demo reel I’d cry! Eek! And who am I kidding there probably is!!!
What did you apply for? Maybe they won’t take too much heed to it…
It was for the undergraduate program.
It was that the little bottom stripe w/text indicating what I did in the shot overlapped to the next cut for a sec u_u
I had rerendered so many different versions of the reel this mistake slipped past me. /sigh
Oh that is so irritating!! Those little finickity bits are so annoying! Though again, I’m sure as it’s only so slight and for a second, they’re not going to disregard the entire demoreel because of it… but it must be irritating for you. Titles can be so stubborn.
Has anyone else applied to the Publicity Internship? I hadn’t seen anyone mention it on this year’s boards. I’m super super SUPER nervous because I’m from Scotland, hoping that the fact that I’m Scottish and have red hair might put me in good standing considering Brave haha
It is because I go to an art school and I am in a visual effects program. We are very fortunate to have a lot of great studios pay visits. I’m assuming you go to a state school? The only state school I see companies visit is Texas A&M bc they apparently have a good film school. If you want to work in film you should consider a art school for grad school then all the companies will come!
they also go to the CS folks at Berkeley (which is a state school as well), Stanford, MIT, and a few others… that’s where they recruit many of the GT and Tools folks. what you say about art schools is certainly true for artistic TD jobs! in technology, though, you better do some work with some professors that write siggraph or similar papers. the references you have matters most, not so much where you are from.
i’m from ETH in switzerland, no recruiter has ever visited that school either.
You have a point. All of the professors at least at SCAD have years of industry experience and know a lot of people in the industry. Our faculty is fortunate enough to be from companies like Pixar, ILM, Disney, and Rhythm & Hues. A lot of our alumni work in TD jobs. I think it is important as a programmer from film to at least have an understanding of art principles. But you are right our industry is small enough that references are very important but reel content is also important because no one is going to refer you if your reel is crap.
I know the deadline wasn’t that long ago but has anyone heard anything?
Do you work in the Disney Research lab? My friend did an internship just last summer there.
My group submitted a paper to SIGGRAPH, our scores weren’t all that great. But papers with lower scores than ours have been accepted. They liked the idea, but our examples weren’t convincing enough.
Yeah I think for connections you really need to get into a private school. Or at least one that advertises their connections with the industry or the jobs their alumni & faculty had.
I was actually thinking bout going to SCAD but I thought NY was a better place for job/internship opportunities.
As for hearing back from them, I think the earliest is 6 days after deadline. Sooo… this weekend? Or beginning of next week. Eeeeeppppp!!
I’ve made my connections by just emailing, going to conferences like SIGGRAPH, and staying in contact with recruiters. My school does get emails for jobs, but they’re forwarded from one person who sends them to a bunch of university graphics group mailing lists and they tend to be more along the lines of software development and research.
You probably know my friend who goes to SVA. She’s finishing up her thesis right now.
Oh I’m sure a school like SCAD has plenty of connections in faculty and alumni, but I don’t think the campus area has anywhere near the number of studios NYC has. It is easy for us to take jobs or internships anytime of the year and at many different houses due to proximity.
