The opening day of Ratatouille in France was not only the best opening day for a Pixar movie, but also the best opening day for an animated movie ever !
And it’s not finished : if you don’t take sequels into account, it was the 4th best opening day of all time in France. Yeah !
Oh well. You can’t win 'em all. Heck, even I’ve neglected to see the film on a regular basis. On the upside, it has gained worldwide attention, and those universal totals are close to blasting through the roof, so I’m not worried.
Personally, I never did much care for box office results. It’s whether or not the film itself is good that matters to me.
I’m with you on that; I’ve seen it 4 times so far, and each time as we were standing in line, people would ask “How is Ratatouille?” whereupon people who’d seen it (including yours truly, natch) would be all “Oh, it’s wonderful! You have to see it! Bring your friends!” As someone else said, the “heart” in this movie is strong enough to engender a word-of-mouth campaign that’s stronger than any hype.
Latest from BoM:
Domestic: $194,142,609 61.9%
Foreign: $119,271,000 38.1%
= Worldwide: $313,413,609
Is that bad? I mean, who cares about domestic grosses when the worldwide is over 300 mil?
Also, somebody tell me what DVD releases mean to a movie like this. I’ve heard more than one budget-conscious friend tell me “Oh, I’ll save the $10 to buy it on DVD, since I’ll be watching it 100 times anyway…”
Since I am going to see Ratatouille again, and probably another time after that, I actually wondered how much money it would have made simply due to repeat viewings… This film deserves to be seen more than once because of all the detail - I bet you notice something new each time.
rachel - Well, I can tell you right now that I’ve probably contributed to a sixteenth of Ratatouille’s profits, as I’ve spent approxiamately $300+ on the film alone. Ridiculous, I know, but there ya’ have it!
But yeah, I see what you mean. People who have seen the film and loved it will, most likely, want to see it again, so there’s an extra “repeat viewing” right there. Then, of course, they’ll tell their friends and relatives, so there’s some more money in the bag, and the cycle continues…
And yep, you notice something new every time. I’ve seen the darn thing twenty-one times and I still notice something that I hadn’t seen previously.
Mitch - I saw that you had changed your signature to a Ratatouille counter, and my first thought was “That must have cost her a pretty penny!”. You must really like the movie to actually pay to see it that many times. It’s really encouraging too, that you notice something different every time.
Oh, yeah, I have tried (in vain sometimes, though ) to let my family know how much of a good film this is. It really does seem like a “word-of-mouth” film. I can see why they chose to have preview screenings, now. I can’t wait to see it again when it’s actually released.
rachel - Yeah, I really do love it. It lifted my spirits and my heart to a great extent; I can’t really explain in words how much I adore this picture/feature… <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/love2.gif” alt=“:loves:” title="In

Haha. Cha, I tell anyone who asks about the film itself to go and see it! You’re right: It’s a “word-of-mouth” film in every aspect, but the cool thing about that is that reviews of the film spread like wildfire. Everyone should see the thing. (snigger)
Mitch - Yeah, you say that all the time Mitch. This film seems like it means so much to you. <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/love2.gif” alt=“:loves:” title="In
Love" /> I hope it has that effect on me when I see it again, and again…
Mitch - It does get repetitive, but never annoying. Heh. And I honestly mean that it doesn’t annoy me at all. It’s quite sweet that you enjoy it so much.
