Of course I meant “all time” US domestic Box Office ranking for computer animated feature films
current TOP TEN:
1 Shrek 2
2 Finding Nemo
3 Shrek the Third
4 Shrek
5 The Incredibles
6 Monsters, Inc.
7 Toy Story 2
8 Cars
9 Happy Feet
10 Ratatouille
Ratatouille is less than $3,000,000 behind HappyFeet so I think it’s just a matter of time before Rats replace Penguins on 9th place and then hopefully cross $200 million mark
Kaszubas - How awesome! It’s nice to know that it made the top ten list, even if it is at the bottom of the pool for the time being. It figures that Shrek 2 takes the top spot, even though it sucks… (snigger)
Yeah… But there is even bigger Sssucker The Third Literally the third in this ranking… Only worthy sequel in this top ten is TS2. This is obviously not a Top Ten BEST Animated Movies Ever list, but it’s still nice that some good films are/were popular and appealing to mass audiences and many people could enjoy them
I hope that Ratatouille BO results will prove to executives once again that telling original stories may be very profitable, but on the other hand it could be tempting to produce some even more profitable sequels to the original already profitable films…
Knowing executives, the only thing they’ll see is a big fat mound of green paper; however, there is always the rare exception. As for sequels, Pixar is pretty careful about what they reel out of their cinematic pool. They are a different species unto themselves, it seems: They only make sequels to their films if the story behind the production in question is solid, with a firm foundation and an equally endearing concept to match. So far, they’ve only hauled out one sequel, and it rendered beautifully to its audience in both story and character development.
You’re absolutely right, but key words in question are “SO FAR” How much longer will Disney executives and shareholders be able to resist huge temptation of enormous numbers franchises like Shrek earn ?
I don’t believe Shrek 2 is at the top! I just wish that people wouldn’t go to see a film like that, just so it wouldn’t make much money, just to prove to those money-hungry people at Dreamworks that crappy sequels don’t cut it. Having Shrek 2 at the top there just encourages them to make more.
Kaszubas- Which is exactly why films like Ratatouille should hopefully make more money, because the more money an original CGI film like that makes, the more the film companies will be encouraged to make original films and not sell out with rubbish sequels. Problem is that the reality is that it doesn’t work like that. Hopefully Pixar will hold out for as long as possible, never caving in to making rubbish films for the money- they’ve held out this long, which is more than can be said for most companies!
Kaszubas - Mmm – yeah, that’s true. However, I agree with lizardgirl on this matter. Disney was actually planning to make a sequel Finding Nemo along with there Toy Story 3 concept, but Pixar got a hold of the Toy Story film and the whole deal with “Nemo” was cut, I believe (thank goodness). Like lizardgirl stated, the studio in question (Pixar) has held out this long, and I ain’t giving up on 'em yet!
Despite not having any big releases this week, Ratatouille is in third place worldwide for the third week in a row, earning $16.6 million. In the U.S., the film got $1.6 million. The current worldwide totals are:
$197,322,082 - Domestic $149,423,000 - Foreign
$346,745,082 - Total
Oh, and my guess is that Ratatouille will cross the $200 million mark in the U.S. by Labor Day.
In France, things are going pretty well : after breaking the opening day record for an animated movie, the first week of Ratatouille was strong, yet a little inferior to Finding Nemo first week.
But now, the film is on its way to be the most successful movie of the year. Better than HP or POTC3 (only a drop of 2% this week ! Excellent word of mouth I guess).
Shark Bait - Thank you for the information/update, Shark Bait!
Although it has taken Ratatouille some time to get near the $200 million dollar mark, it appears as if it will at least cross the line sometime in the near future (ie., Labor Day, like you stated).
Ratatouille finally reached 9th place in CG animated US BO rankings and 11th place among animated films (CG and traditional) passing Happy Feet It’s not likely for Rats to climb any higher in both rankings - Aladdin’s’ $217 millions is probably as much beyond their reach as Cars’ $245 millions, so now we can focus on keep our fingers crossed for Ratatouille’s crossing $200 millions and good Worldwide BoxOffice result …can’t wait to finally watch this film!!! 3 more weeks…
Hey guys, I thought that you wanted to know that Ratatouille is doing great in Portugal as well!
Unfortunately, I don’t exactly know the box office numbers, but according to the Portuguese magazine “Visão”, Ratatouille took 77 thousand people to the cinemas in only 48 hours. Besides, right on its opening day [August 15], it was seen by 42 thousand people, becoming the best opening for an animated movie in Portugal, leaving behind successes like “Finding Nemo”, “The Incredibles”, “Cars”, “Ice Age 2” and “Shrek the Third”.
The numbers may appear small to some of you, but consider that Portugal is a small country too…
That’s great, Maggie! If Ratatouille broke records for best opening for an animated movie, then it must be doing well. Thanks! I’ll see if I can keep an eye on the Australian reception of the film.
Domestic - Ratatouille earned $1.1 million in the U.S. this past weekend, and the current total as of Tuesday is $199.3 million. My guess is that it should hit the $200 million mark by Monday (Labor Day) or Tuesday of next week.
Foreign - Ratatouille passed Toy Story’s foreign gross this week, with a second place $11.8 million weekend, and a total of $172.3. I see Ratatouille’s foreign gross surpassing the domestic gross in one to two weeks. The current totals:
Worldwide the film has passed both Toy Story and A Bug’s Life (inflation not factored in), but is still about $90 million behind Cars and $110 behind Toy Story 2. I doubt Ratatouille will be one of Pixar’s highest-grossing movies worldwide, but I think it should come close to the $500 million mark by the end of its’ run.
