I’m just so curious to see where they’re going to take it next.
The writers Ted and
Terry gave an interview a while back and a few things they said really caught my attention; I got the impression
that they’ve taken the romance between Elizabeth and Will as far as they can (since it was only intended as a
one-off movie and the hero got the girl and that was the end), and they really want to shake up the romance and
the characters now and do something different.
Apparently, when they first presented the ending to the
execs, everyone said, ‘You can’t do that!’ So I imagine it’s going to be a bit
of a shock to the system!
But I utterly trust them to tell a great story; not only did they write all three
Pirates, but they did Shrek and
Aladdin, too.
My theory is… well, long and boring mostly, so feel free to
skip. I’m going to put it in spoilers tags just in case.
[spoil]My theory is that Jack’s
going to get the girl. And not just because I’m using Keira Knightley as a tranference tool to bring myself
that little step closer to Johnny Depp. No. No, of course not. I use my burgular’s tools and hefty bribes to
the local police force for that. But rather because I think, with the compass, they’ve pretty much said all
that needs to be said about the relationship between them.
The compass points to the thing you want most.
The writers came out and said that the reason Jack can’t get his compass to work at first – and Tia Dalma said
it in the movie, too – is because he knows what he wants but he knows he can’t have it. Apparently, the 'Why
is the rum always gone?’ line was to remind the audience of the last time he said it – when he was on the
island with Liz. He wants Elizabeth (so it points towards her), but he also wants to be as far away from her as
possible because he knows he can’t have her (so it points the opposite way). (In the original draft,
apparently, instead of the compass just moving back and forth, it pointed one way absolutely, and Jack gave Mr.
Gibbs the bearings to go in the opposite direction.)
And I think, in the terms of the story, it would make
sense. They’ve both developed as characters. Jack’s become ‘a good man’ since he went back to the Pearl
during the Krakken attack, and Elizabeth has always wanted to break free of the tight roles of society – you can
see that in the first film, not only in her character but in the symbolisation of the restraining corset as well
– and Jack represents the ultimate free man. I think the scene where you see her wedding dress sinking into the
ocean is meant to be read as symbolic of a change in her character and her position.
Plus, the both have
birdy surnames. Clearly, on this evidence alone, they is soulmates, OTP, Jack and Liz FTW, OMG their love is so
pure!
Also, IMO, Will’s first priority has shifted to saving his father over Elizabeth; he wanted to
turn the ship around and fight Davy Jones rather than, you know, escape like everyone else wanted. He would have
put them all in mortal peril if he’d had his way.[/spoil]
I’m
going to stop talking now. Anyone agree/disagree?
