The Inevitable Pirates of the Caribbean 2 thread ;)

I almost laughed anytime I heard Flying Dutchman though … to be honest …

because everytime I heard it - I thought of the character from Spongebob. And I don’t even watch Spongebob

anymore … did this happen to anyone else? Cause it happend to all my friends too, hah.

Nah, I occasionally thought of that book series of Brian

Jacques, though.

Nope, I did think of the

Flying Welshman from Curse of Monkey Island, though!

You gotta hate IMDB. I saw

Barbossa on the cast, but I didn’t think he’d return. I thought it was either a mistake, or that he just acted

out a flashback. I should’ve hinted at the boots but I was … I dunno, out of my mind at that moment …

:stuck_out_tongue:

LOL! Well, the Flying Dutchman ship is

so famous that it’s been spoofed just about everywhere! The Sea Captain’s restaurant in [i]The

Simpsons[/i] is called The Frying Dutchman!

The legend behind it is closest to

Monkey Island’s version as far as I know, though. The crew of the Flying Dutchman

have to sail for eternity, lost at sea, but can never come to shore. (No lighthouse mirrors and impromptu

compasses, though.) The legends say that the captain wouldn’t back down in the face of a massive storm and he

damned the whole crew to their fate, or else they were stricken with the plague and every port sent them

away.

I really liked the way the writers (long live Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio!) took fragments of

existing pirate lore and mythology, like the legend of Davy Jones, the Flying Dutchman and the Krakken, and

turned it into something completely new.

Exactly. The got a bunch of pirate lore (like Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Black Spot”) and made

Pirates of the Caribbean sort of a crash course on the basics of Pirate history and lore!!

Yep! That’s what makes it so awesome  On the one hand

POTC has revived a genre that Geena Davis slaughtered in the mid-nineties, but on the other hand - what is REALLY

going to follow it?

True . . . I remember Master in Commander coming out just after POTC: Curse of the Black

Pearl, and did awful . . . and it wasn’t THAT BAD of a movie. It was just the ghost of how great POTC did! I

doubt there’ll be another great Pirate movie after POTC3 for several years!

EDIT - Nice new avy!

haha, thanks! I have no idea who made it, it wasn’t me that’s for sure! I love it though

I didn’t

actually see Master and Commander, I wanted to but never got to it! I’m still wading back through old pirate

movies, I’ve been in love with pirates ever since a friend put me on to Monkey Island way back in '99 or 2000

 Pirates of the Caribbean is definitely my favourite so far, I am so glad the sequel didn’t disappoint.

I’m just so curious to see where they’re going to take it next.

The writers Ted and

Terry gave an interview a while back and a few things they said really caught my attention; I got the impression

that they’ve taken the romance between Elizabeth and Will as far as they can (since it was only intended as a

one-off movie and the hero got the girl and that was the end), and they really want to shake up the romance and

the characters now and do something different.

Apparently, when they first presented the ending to the

execs, everyone said, ‘You can’t do that!’ So I imagine it’s going to be a bit

of a shock to the system! But I utterly trust them to tell a great story; not only did they write all three

Pirates, but they did Shrek and

Aladdin, too.

My theory is… well, long and boring mostly, so feel free to

skip. I’m going to put it in spoilers tags just in case.

[spoil]My theory is that Jack’s

going to get the girl. And not just because I’m using Keira Knightley as a tranference tool to bring myself

that little step closer to Johnny Depp. No. No, of course not. I use my burgular’s tools and hefty bribes to

the local police force for that. But rather because I think, with the compass, they’ve pretty much said all

that needs to be said about the relationship between them.

The compass points to the thing you want most.

The writers came out and said that the reason Jack can’t get his compass to work at first – and Tia Dalma said

it in the movie, too – is because he knows what he wants but he knows he can’t have it. Apparently, the 'Why

is the rum always gone?’ line was to remind the audience of the last time he said it – when he was on the

island with Liz. He wants Elizabeth (so it points towards her), but he also wants to be as far away from her as

possible because he knows he can’t have her (so it points the opposite way). (In the original draft,

apparently, instead of the compass just moving back and forth, it pointed one way absolutely, and Jack gave Mr.

Gibbs the bearings to go in the opposite direction.)

And I think, in the terms of the story, it would make

sense. They’ve both developed as characters. Jack’s become ‘a good man’ since he went back to the Pearl

during the Krakken attack, and Elizabeth has always wanted to break free of the tight roles of society – you can

see that in the first film, not only in her character but in the symbolisation of the restraining corset as well

– and Jack represents the ultimate free man. I think the scene where you see her wedding dress sinking into the

ocean is meant to be read as symbolic of a change in her character and her position.

Plus, the both have

birdy surnames. Clearly, on this evidence alone, they is soulmates, OTP, Jack and Liz FTW, OMG their love is so

pure!

Also, IMO, Will’s first priority has shifted to saving his father over Elizabeth; he wanted to

turn the ship around and fight Davy Jones rather than, you know, escape like everyone else wanted. He would have

put them all in mortal peril if he’d had his way.[/spoil]

I’m

going to stop talking now. Anyone agree/disagree?

Makes pretty good sense to me, but then – [spoil]is Will the new Norrington? In

terms of getting screwed over, anyway![/spoil]

LOL! Must

be!

[spoil]I wouldn’t say he was getting screwed over, though. Like I said, Bootstrap Bill is

now his priority over everything and I’m thinking that includes Elizabeth. I can see him standing aside or

choosing to be with his father rather than be with Elizabeth.

Plus, he’s Orlando Bloom and I imagine

it’s not too hard for him to find a bit of hot totty. :-p [/spoil]

I won’t deny that

[spoil]Sparrow and Swan have something, but I still think Turner will get Elizabeth (this reminds me

of that scene on Isla La Cruces where Turner and Swann are kissing and stuff and Sparrow and Norrington are just

watching . . . hilarious, I must add!)

Don’t ask me why, I just get that feeling, despite the

contrary.

That compass can change more than once, you know . . . .[/spoil]

No -

Jack and the Kraken will get married, of course! ^^

What you said makes a lot of sense actually … but my

friend had a different theory …
[spoil] After they save Jack and stuff - Will is such a

self-sacraficing person he’d say to Liz "Look you obviously want to be with Jack more - go be with

him" and then he’ll run off to save his dad. Jack will be like “Oh crud this is wrong.” and then

they’ll all go off to save Will and Bill. And … well probably at that point it’s Liz’s choice.

[/spoil]

OR they could just be like Star Wars – with Princess Leia and Luke being siblings and

ending up with Han Solo (Leia of course - not Luke). Maybe they share the same mother. :open_mouth: Ewww.
But … in the

theory you had – Liz and Jack are very much the Leia and Han Solo pairing. In a way. And I’m not even a big

Star Wars fan. o_O

But Sparrow and Swann … you’re so right. Total destiny. Turner – pfftt. No one

cares about Orlando Bloom.

I doubt Governor Weatherby Swann would allow of son of his

to be a blacksmith . . . he seemed pretty clear on THAT.

But I do think your right, that it will be

Elizabeth’s choice . . .

I just think she’ll choose Will! :stuck_out_tongue:

And Jack can go back to being

slapped by Gizel, Scarlet, and Anamaria!!

[spoil]
Oh we already know that Bootstraps has to be Will’s dad –

I’m just suggesting — have we ever learned about Will or Liz’s mothers? I don’t think they’ve been brought

up.[/spoil]

Haha I can imagine though … Gov. Swann "Will - I am your

father!"
Which … would never make sense anyways since everyone says Will looks just like his dad.

(Although … I’m not sure if I really saw any connections … maybe he did when he was “alive” … and

younger …)

. . . and without a starfish

on his face and muscles on his sides!

The mother plot IS interesting . . . could make sense too: Like

mother like Daughter – except the mother may have onlt had two loves and Elizabeth has about three right

now!

ROFL! Ooh, I

don’t know, I think Orlando Bloom might look quite fetching with a starfish face!

Jessie, your

theory’s really interesting, I can actually see that happening!

Oh man, ten whole months 'til we find

out for sure! :`-(

Oh dear this second installment of

Pirates of the Caribbean has gotten me so hooked. I saw it twice in the same weekend. And then it led to me

watching the first movie almost everyday since!

My favorite character in this one is Tia Dalma. Who do you

guys like? Of course, Jack Sparrow is my favorite in the first. But oh lord, that accent of Tia Dalma’s… how

could she not be your favorite? (despite the fact that her lips are rotting…)

Ahh… Davy Jones is quite the character as well. He’s just so interesting to

examine… both visually and emotionally. I would really like to know his past. heh. I like his voice too. It’s

very… menacing… yet… convincing…? And slightly Scottish.
