I hate to be a bubble burster, but it’s been pointed out multiple times that Thinkway approached retailers with their prototype of Hamm, and no one was willing to pick it up, so it got cancelled, which unfortunately means that Wave 3, if produced, will not likely include Hamm.
And I agree, if Hamm were to come in the Collection without all the bells and whistles, it could lower the price and make it more likely, but I think at this point, Thinkway looks at most of these toys as a way to extort money from us by saying it’s worth the higher price point for all the extra stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love the extra stuff, and I don’t mind paying the higher price for screen accurate toys, but I do understand where other people are coming from with not wanting unnecessary stuff. Unfortunately, I think that Thinkway has just decided that if it’s in the Collection, it has to have pizazz and a wow factor that the other toys don’t.
On the subject of Wave 3, I think that the line-up will consist of Zurg, Prospector, Trixie, Mrs. Potato Head, and, if we’re extremely lucky, Stretch or a joint release Totoro, similar to how Potato Head was with Playskool. If we aren’t extremely lucky, then I could see them doing Buttercup or another of Bonnie’s toys, and doing it more accurately than the Disney Store plush ones. Peas in a Pod are pretty close, but the rest could do for a higher quality treatment, even though I don’t see either of the other three warranting the $50 price tag. And while I hope against hope that this doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be 100% surprised if they decided to release a Regular Buzz Lightyear that only speaks in Spanish, to go along with his TS3 counterpart.
My reasoning behind these is this:
Mrs. Potato Head: She makes the most sense of all these, as it would take the least amount of work to put out, and Thinkway is business that I’m sure enjoys spending as little as possible. Similar to how Belt Buzz was a rehash of Regular Buzz, the Mrs. could use the current body, and would only need new eyes, earrings on the ears, new nose, hat, and mouth, shoes, and possibly a purse. Then, they simply change the voice box with one of Estelle Harris, and voila, Mrs. Potato Head.
Prospector: They’ve already done Bullseye, Jessie, and Woody, and Prospector’s box plays a large part in TS2, so it wouldn’t make sense to not complete The Round-up Gang. They could include his pick axe to make up for the fact that he is essentially a statue with a pullstring, but I think having a few additional phrases with Kelsey Grammer’s voice would be nice.
Zurg: They made the Belt Buzz, so why not include his dad? Plus, Zurg is one of those toys that you could create a bunch of cool features on to make him worth the higher price point, like Zurg Vision, Ball Blaster, LED mouth and eyes for when he talks, and we’ve somewhat seen his box already, so they wouldn’t need to invent a new one And Zurg is one of my favorites, but that’s just my preference.
Trixie: Of the remaining new toys that haven’t had a decent attempt already, Trixie would be the one that would make the most sense in this scale. One, because they already have the design of the box from Rex. Two, She needs to be similar to Rex in order to give the appearance that they are from the same line, and since our Rex talks, it would make sense that this Trixie would talk too.
Stretch/Totoro: Stretch has yet to see a decent attempt as well, and I think that the best way to get her out would be in this line, as she is a little too large to put in the same line as Twitch, Chunk, and Sparks. On the other hand, there isn’t much they can do with a rubber octopus to make it worth the higher price point. Totoro already has a decent figure, but he is primarily available in Japan, and as such is not as accessible as if he were released here in the Collection.
Bonnie’s Remaining Toys: Buttercup seems a bit short in the current DS plush version, and the eyes kind of bug me. Pricklepants doesn’t have that imported from England feel with his current version, as his hair on his back is a cheaper faux fur, rather than the more expensive types they use in England, and his eyes are sewn on, not actual beads like in the movie. Dolly needs the most work though, as her buttons need to be real, not felt, her eyes should be googly craft eyes, not sewn on, and her overall texture needs to be a little less shiny. These things being said, I really don’t see any of these getting the Collection treatment unfortunately, as Thinkway will probably consider the current versions decent enough.
What do you guys think about this?
