On Buzz, the two issues that I would seriously revise:
The wing span is incorrect. As well the striping on the top section on the wings are at a wrong angle. The lights on the end are just a tad out of proportion as well, too large but that may be adjusted to the overall revised design om purpose. The mid section is just a tad wider/shorter than the screen piece. The top arm joints with the black rings do not match up (although this may be necessary for the arms to move more), the facial expression does not match up to the toy when he is in a static mode.
On the Pizza Planet Aliens: No squeaker, paint quality issues.
On Woody: The best of them, the only issue comes on the stand, which damages the neck by having too tight of a grip holding the piece.
Rex: The jaw hing, which is a shame because this is such a glaring issue.
Race Car: Such a great piece, the only issue is they got cheap on the steering control. Would have been heck on Woody trying to chase down the truck if he had to lift up the front of the car and turn each time to steer.
The Soldiers, as brought up before, they stylized these a bit when they should have gone with the old fashion cheaper plastic look. This has been corrceted on the later batches.
Wave Two: its hard to judge on the prototype pictures, but there seems to be a couple issues I hope they corrected later…
Jessie: Torso is too thick. Facial expression is also wrong. The Mattel piece seems to have done a nicer job in the pre-sale pictures, I really hope this is not the case.
Buzz: All the same issues we are seeing with Buzz may be on this latest piece along with downgraded electronics we are seeing on the latest batches.
Bullseye: Looking good.
Mr. Potato head: not enough good shot out yet to make any judgment on. I believe the electronics will make it hard to pop in a back door for storage, if they pull that off, kudos on this piece.
Thats the in movie joke, but I thought we were talking about the blooper version of it, with the writing on his wings. that’s a different joke entirely. but the reason they got away with it is its pretty subtle. I mean, it can just be shrugged off as a nervous reaction.
Also in that context, [spoil]the fact that Buzz has This Space for Rent written on his-ahem toy equivalents could imply that he’s “For Sale” if you catch my drift.[/spoil]
It’s funny how you point out all that stuff and then nothing about Woody having the wrong facial expression. The things you point out on Buzz’s body seem really insignificant and not noticeable.
we’ve all noticed the wrong facial expression, I think we’re just over it because it cant be changed, and its still on model at least. other problems are more important because they are not (on model)
I can understand a bit on the facial expressions as you can say they wanted a look from the "live"scenes as they looked better. Certainly the Woody replica does look nicer than the prototype Woody with the static slight smile look. I can see that being a marketing factor in favor of a change for the positive. But the Buzz wing proportion could have been and should have been fixed.
Other factors can include that at some overseas factories, manufacturers will take the liberty of tweaking designs to make things easier or cheaper. Its notorious over in China and something that licensees really have to ride heavily handed to avoid. So there may be some other issues Pixar feels is out of their hands. Although again, you can control most of these issues if they really wanted to or if they realized they were there. It may be that the people that oversaw the project just do not have the critical eye that collector/consumers have.
Id really like to know how you’d suggest fixing the wing’s length problem. I think even in the commentary they mention how the wings are unrealisticly long to fold up properly in that small space, but I might have to listen to it again, its been a while.
the only thing I could see them fixing would be not the length, but how thick the first section of the wings are. but I think the length was cheated.
I had noticed that the leg stilts changed from brown to blue, so it was already obvious that its a different variation of it. I assume the ones in the pictures are early prototypes, and that the one in the commercial is the newest one, but the truth is we dint know when the ad was shot. Maybe theres a chance its the other way around?
but yeah, I assume we’ll be getting the unibrow. Its an odd change for sure. I think they already had their minds set on fusing the two eyes together, so it was just a question of would they rather tilt the eyes to help create the illusion of more separation? or have them be more straight and fuse the brows too?
Either way, I’ll be buying Tyler’s (the prop maker I mentioned a couple pages back) custom eyes and brows so I wont have to put up with either one.
Edit: also I see that video was uploaded back in December. maybe if we’re lucky things have changed since then.
I hope it is the other way round. IMO the unibrow Potato head looks pretty lifeless in comparison to the other one. Also the shoes look too high on the unibrow one. Please post pictures once you get the eyes from the prop maker as I’ll probably want to get a set for myself if they’re good.
I wonder if there will be a TSC Mrs. Potato Head. Thinkway would have to give her separate eyes considering she only has one in TS3.
