My shop on shapeways should be setup by early January so any one who wants a pair of eyes pm me so I can figure how many I’ll need for the set of 4 it will be around 4.50 plus shipping my online store is http://www.shapeways.com/shops/woodbuzz
Will they come painted?
Im interested, but I kinda need to see the final product first. How it sets on the head, weather there’s any kind of gap between the eye and the potato like Tyler’s. Then of course I’ll need to know if they’ll be sanded smooth (if they still look that rough when printed) and painted.
As for the eye brows, so far their not quite what they need to be in my opinion, they look like they have grill marks instead of actual form. However I’m perfectly satisfied with Tyler’s so that’s not a big deal for me. I would like to see someone address the gap Tyler’s initial set (the one I have) had though, so if yours turn out better I’m in.
well they look rough only because of the rendering of them they will actually print out smoother. And no they wont be painted
I’d be interested if they came painted.
Well that would be impossible because I never actually get the eyes you would would purchase them from shapeways and they send them directly to you. There made with a 3d printer and a 3d printer cant print colors.
Me too, without the paint I don’t think it’s worth it.
I think they are still worth it because when they are pretty accurate and painting them is simple they come out white so it just be black and brown that would require painting
The only disappointing thing about shapeways is the $6.50 shipping (which is the same whether you buy one or 10)
But $10 for a decent set of potato head eyes (painted or not) is not a bad deal. As soon as I see the prototype, I’m in. It would be great if you could make Mrs. Potatohead parts!
Namely a mouth, eyes (with different eyebrows than mr P, shouldn’t be hard) and her nose
Yeah I plan on doing Mrs. Potato head as well But when I do it I’d build all the parts in one file that way to avoid ordering parts separately.
Painting shouldn’t be difficult at all. You can use MODEL acrylic paints and then varnish.
I know how to paint them but I don’t get the eyes that people order shapeway ships them out after they print them.
I can paint my own I mean lol
Oh good ok I thought you meant I should paint them and ship them out myself ha ha.
I wouldn’t worry about it, if $10 is too much for someone, who would simply have to get a $.99 thing of acrylic paint and basically follow a groove, then thats on them
However, since the way shipping works, you could order them in bulk (10-20 at once), buy one thing of paint, paint them, and ship them out in small mailers, and still charge the $10-11 (or maybe a dollar or two more for your effort)
If that would increase your sales flow, it might worth it, just something to think about
That’s a good suggestion too Slink. The only problem is the continuity of each set of eyes. Specially the eyeball itself some people might not like the way he positioned them.
I would actually draw the pupil and buy a reem of glossy sticker paper, then you could make prolly 40-50 pupils on one sheet of sticker paper and print them out, at least the size would be the same. You could maybe even give a few example sizes and maybe some people will like different pupils
the only thing after that is making sure they are center, which should be tood hard if u used a ruler
If i end up painting my own, thats what im doing for the pupil
hehe you sound like such an experienced seller now
I think that might work as long as everyone could pay upfront so I could order them without breaking my bank account. and as the pupils I was planning on letting the buyer put them on as I’m not very good at aligning things but your suggestion about the sheets could work if I’m not to busy that is.
Well, none of that is neccessary really, just might help sales. Like I said, I can easily do ALL of those things myself. It’s what I learned about the troikas, if a computer can do something for you (like a perfect circle, pupil, etc), you should let it do it.
My suggestion to you would be this:
Order your one prototype. And paint it yourself, and if you want, try the pupil thing. Post pics online and let people critique it. Gauge for yourself how much effort it took to make them look the way they do. If you can reasonably and affordably reproduce the same product again in a reasonable amount of time, it might be something to consider. If not, leave the customization to us and let us sort it out.
My thought would be this: For each of us to buy an unpainted set will be about $11 (with shipping)
If you ordered 10, you would pay $47 or $4.70 each. It would cost you less than a dollar to ship them out. So your cost would be $5.70 each. If you buy the paint, sticker paper, etc anyway for your own, then you already have the materials, if you buy lets say $20 worth of materials for others, that puts you $7.70 per item.
So if you still sold 10 @ $11 you’d make an additional $33 on top of what you make on your store, for every 10 pairs
Is that worth it to you? Is it worth your time and effort? Thats a decision you have to make.
