WALL•E Superbowl Spot

It could have been Jim Hanks (Tom’s brother). He does the voice work for Woody for Toy Story spin-offs, merchandise, video games etc

rachelcakes1985: great info. Now that I didn’t know. I didn’t know Tom Hanks had a brother who voiced woody sometimes. That’s probably it.

update: rachelcakes1985:woah rachel niice. I researched more about Jim Hanks. He practically was the 2nd voice of woody. He did Woody’s voice in a buzz lightyear movie. And he does the voices in like all the commercials because he’s a “voice-over artist”. I didn’t know that before.
If anyone is gonna be a sub for Woody, Jim Hanks is the man. Case closed.

I still think it’s Tom Hanks.

Oh yeahhh Jim Hanks is that good. They say he looks and sounds super similar to his brother Tom Hanks. That’s why they use him for practically all Woody commercials. Check out Jim Hanks on Wikipedia and IMDB.

Half-desperate/half-joking pseudo-point just to be silly: If the actor were munching on popcorn in the booth, like Woody was on screen, of course we wouldn’t be able to tell the actor by the voice. Obviously his mother didn’t tell him not to talk with his mouth full. :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay, case time:

I’m going to quote one of those stereotypical classroom posters: “What is popular isn’t always what’s right; what is right isn’t always what’s popular.” Just because a lot of people (many with untrained ears, many more who only saw the ad once) don’t believe that it was a certain person (Tom or Jim) doesn’t make it true. Popular opinion won’t make the sky any color but blue; it will take the sky to actually become something other than blue for the phrase “The sky is blue” to be wrong.

There is a difference between “in production,” “pre-production,” “filming,” and “announced.” Each of the four movies listed as forthcoming on Tom Hanks’ IMDB page is listed as one of these.

According to the IMDB Glossary, “pre-production” means “Arrangements made before the start of filming. This can include script editing, set construction, location scouting, and casting.” “Production” means “In the movie industry, this term refers to the phase of movie making during which principal photography occurs. Popularly, however, “production” means the entire movie project.” “Announced” and “filming” aren’t in the glossary, but I think it’s clear what they mean.

Tom’s IMDB page lists the films “Angels & Demons” as “in production” with a 2009 release, and “Toy Story 3” as “filming” with a 2010 release. The films “Fahrenheit 451” (2009 release) and “Boone’s Lick” (2008 release) are listed as “announced” and “pre-production,” respectively, but both are also listed as rumored roles for Hanks. Furthermore, the page for “Angels and Demons,” the only film which Hanks could possibly be working on concurrent to his voice work for TS3, shows that its production has been put on hiatus thanks to the WGA writers’ strike. Therefore, it does not appear that there is anything to keep Tom from recording a few lines of dialogue for the ad.

Given that I did not know about his brother stepping into Woody’s boots for tie-in titles (games, etc.), I am willing to admit that it is feasible that it is Jim Hanks doing the voicework in this commercial, and I was prepared to be wrong if the evidence that it wasn’t Tom were there and legitimate. However, I believe there is still a reasonable doubt, and we cannot close the case just yet.

I am not trying to say anybody is wrong, but I am saying that perhaps we should wait for something official to come along and tell us exactly who it was that voiced Woody in the ad.

KyrieEleison: aw but it’s not a classroom… More like witnesses in a crime. Counting the people with no connection to others. The people who saw it on TV and said “not him!”.
It’s like when one day… the sky turned green for one second. And different people from around the world say “the sky turned green!” all at the same time. The chances are… the sky did turn green. I’m not saying this gives all the evidence needed. Just saying it is a big help.

And I only mentioned that Tom Hanks was working “on like 3 movies at the same time” to show that he may be busy and it is very possible for someone else to be voicing woody for him in commercials.

Perhaps the greatest piece of evidence is Jim Hanks. He is a voice-actor who voices for many characters. And he voices Woody in mostly all commercials and other spin-offs. And that superbowl commercial was definitely a commercial and not a trailer for Toy Story

With this evidence… it’s enough to put someone to jail… lol.
But you’re right, we can’t close the case just yet. The only way of settling this is waiting for something official to tell us it’s not Tom Hanks.
Just one of those mysteries with no solid evidence…

It may even end up being a cold case, lol.

Like I said, I’ll accept the evidence if it’s there, and I didn’t know about Jim - at all - so while I’m still not completely abandoning my old position, now I’m sort of playing devil’s advocate. It’s one of my favorite “games”…

More advocating coming in the morning. All good lawyers need their sleep!

Victor Navone says Jim Hanks usually does the voice-over work when it isn’t a feature film.

I wonder how that goes for Jim, living in his brother’s shadow.

Heimlich- There’s no need for you to be rude (like you where on Upcoming Pixar), we aren’t attacking you, I for one wasn’t even talking to you. I compared the TS Trailer with the Commercial. My conclusion, maybe Jim did it, but we will never know until theres an announcement (if ever). The bottom line is, if you’re wrong you’re wrong, and if you’re right you’re right, no need to fight!

Back on topic.

I didn’t know that Tom a a brother. Are they twins?

I liked that spot a lot. I thought it was really cute the way WALL-E was playing around with that vacuum. As for Woody & Buzz, both of them sounded to me like the voices that were in the Toy Story easter eggs. So whoever they were, neither one sounded to me quite like the original.

Well Buzz really does sound like Tim Allen, but Woody, ehh… I don’t know.

I finally saw it via Youtube. So cute!! I showed my brother too since he loves Toy Story, but he was kind to share some gross thoughts about it. :unamused: And he too is looking forward to a Toy Story 3 rather than WALL-E, but I guess it’s just because we’re all familiar with Toy Story and WALL-E is new to the bunch.

When it comes to trusting Wikipedia for unknown Pixar stuff, never trust Wikipedia. IMdB isn’t a bad source, though, but you’re entitled to your opinion. If I ever meet Tom or Jim, I’ll ask them (although that’s highly unlikely 8D ).

Who cares? The great thing about Pixar is that they don’t rely on “big names” to sell their films. Just great actors. Some of whom happen to be big stars.

I remember reading an interview with somemone from Pixar who said that when Tom Hanks signed to do the voice of Woody in Toy Story, Tim Allen was much bigger star. If I recall correctly, between the time Tom Hanks signed to do Toy Story, he made 4 other films: Sleepless in Seatle, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, and Apollo 13.

So, when Tom Hanks was hired for Toy Story, he was a known working actor/comedian. When Toy Story was completed, Tom Hanks was a MAJOR star. Lucky timing more than anything.

Seeing as how voice actors only work on animated films for a few days (as opposed to the actual film makers, who spend up to 4 or more years on a film), it’s entirely possible to believe that Tom Hanks could have done the voice work for the superbowl ad.

But it was his brother.

How do you know? I’d love to see your source for that information (if you have one).

Why not? Sure, anyone can edit Wikipedia, but it’s not like it stays there FOREVER is it’s false info.

It’s actually pretty accurate and up-to-date

If it was so accurate, then Wikipedia wouldn’t be the mess it is today. (I know a Wikipedian when I see one)

For the firs time in my life, I actually sat through the Super Bowl… only to see the Wall-E trailer.

I agree that it was a clever marketing scheme and Woody’s voice did sound different. But it was still enjoyable.

Offtopic: the Iron Man trailer was also delicious.

Sorryyy martinii. That was my “friendly debating”
